Born-Infeld electrostatics in the complex plane
The complex method to obtain 2-dimensional Born-Infeld electrostatic
solutions is presented in a renewed form. The solutions are generated by a
holomorphic seed that makes contact with the Coulombian complex potential. The
procedure is exemplified by solving the Born-Infeld multipolar configurations.
Besides, it is shown that the attractive force between two equal but opposite
charges is lower than its Coulombian partner; it decreases up to vanish when
the charges approach each other below a distance ruled by the Born-Infeld

Impact of daily evaluation and spontaneous breathing test on the duration of pediatric mechanical ventilation: a randomized controlled trial
Objectives: To assess whether the combination of daily evaluation and use of a spontaneous breathing test could shorten the duration of mechanical ventilation as compared with weaning based on our standard of care. Secondary outcome measures included extubation failure rate and the need for noninvasive ventilation.Design: A prospective, randomized controlled trial.Setting: Two pediatric intensive care units at university hospitals in Brazil.Patients: the trial involved children between 28 days and 15 yrs of age who were receiving mechanical ventilation for at least 24 hrs.Interventions: Patients were randomly assigned to one of two weaning protocols. in the test group, the children underwent a daily evaluation to check readiness for weaning with a spontaneous breathing test with 10 cm H(2)O pressure support and a positive end-expiratory pressure of 5 cm H(2)O for 2 hrs. the spontaneous breathing test was repeated the next day for children who failed it. in the control group, weaning was performed according to standard care procedures.Measurements and Main Results: A total of 294 eligible children were randomized, with 155 to the test group and 139 to the control group. the time to extubation was shorter in the test group, where the median mechanical ventilation duration was 3.5 days (95% confidence interval, 3.0 to 4.0) as compared to 4.7 days (95% confidence interval, 4.1 to 5.3) in the control group (p = .0127). This significant reduction in the mechanical ventilation duration for the intervention group was not associated with increased rates of extubation failure or noninvasive ventilation. It represents a 30% reduction in the risk of remaining on mechanical ventilation (hazard ratio: 0.70).Conclusions: A daily evaluation to check readiness for weaning combined with a spontaneous breathing test reduced the mechanical ventilation duration for children on mechanical ventilation for > 24 hrs, without increasing the extubation failure rate or the need for noninvasive ventilation. An Investigation of the Role of Macular Pigment in Attenuating Photostress through Comparison between Blue and Green Photostress Recovery Times
Purpose: Photostress recovery time (PSRT) is the time required for the macula to return to its normal functioning after the bleaching of cone photopigments due to light exposure, usually white. This work investigates the role of macular pigment (MP) as an optical filter that attenuates photostress by analyses of PSRT at different wavelengths. Methods: Thirty-nine subjects (19â28 years) were exposed to blue/green photostress varying in irradiance. During photostress, pupil constriction (Cp) was measured. Twenty-seven subjects (20â27 years) were exposed to white photostress. After 25 s of photostress, the time (PSRT) required to read correctly a 0.2 logMAR letter was measured. Correlation was studied between PSRT, CP, and irradiance. Statistical significance of differences between PSRTs was evaluated at Log(irradiance(quanta sâ1 cmâ2)) = 14 by Studentâs t statistics. Results: Cp and PSRT were found linearly correlated to Log(irradiance) for blue, green, and white. At Log(irradiance(quanta sâ1 cmâ2)) = 14, blue and green mean PSRTs resulted different (p 0.05). Conclusions: MP plays the role of an optical filter attenuating photostress. PSRT was substantially proportional to the number of incident photons corrected for the MP optical absorption, regardless of their wavelength
The detection of the imprint of filaments on cosmic microwave background lensing
Galaxy redshift surveys, such as 2dF, SDSS, 6df, GAMA and VIPERS, have shown
that the spatial distribution of matter forms a rich web, known as the cosmic
web. The majority of galaxy survey analyses measure the amplitude of galaxy
clustering as a function of scale, ignoring information beyond a small number
of summary statistics. Since the matter density field becomes highly
non-Gaussian as structure evolves under gravity, we expect other statistical
descriptions of the field to provide us with additional information. One way to
study the non-Gaussianity is to study filaments, which evolve non-linearly from
the initial density fluctuations produced in the primordial Universe. In our
study, we report the first detection of CMB (Cosmic Microwave Background)
lensing by filaments and we apply a null test to confirm our detection.
Furthermore, we propose a phenomenological model to interpret the detected
signal and we measure how filaments trace the matter distribution on large
scales through filament bias, which we measure to be around 1.5. Our study
provides a new scope to understand the environmental dependence of galaxy
formation. In the future, the joint analysis of lensing and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich
observations might reveal the properties of `missing baryons', the vast
majority of the gas which resides in the intergalactic medium and has so far
evaded most observations
Distances and ages of globular clusters using Hipparcos parallaxes of local subdwarfs
We discuss the impact of Population II and Globular Cluster (GCs) stars on
the derivation of the age of the Universe, and on the study of the formation
and early evolution of galaxies, our own in particular. The long-standing
problem of the actual distance scale to Population II stars and GCs is
addressed, and a variety of different methods commonly used to derive distances
to Population II stars are briefly reviewed. Emphasis is given to the
discussion of distances and ages for GCs derived using Hipparcos parallaxes of
local subdwarfs. Results obtained by different authors are slightly different,
depending on different assumptions about metallicity scale, reddenings, and
corrections for undetected binaries. These and other uncertainties present in
the method are discussed. Finally, we outline progress expected in the near

Replication Pauses of the Wild-Type and Mutant Mitochondrial DNA Polymerase Gamma: A Simulation Study
The activity of polymerase Îł is complicated, involving both correct and incorrect DNA polymerization events, exonuclease activity, and the disassociation of the polymerase:DNA complex. Pausing of pol-Îł might increase the chance of deletion and depletion of mitochondrial DNA. We have developed a stochastic simulation of pol-Îł that models its activities on the level of individual nucleotides for the replication of mtDNA. This method gives us insights into the pausing of two pol-Îł variants: the A467T substitution that causes PEO and Alpers syndrome, and the exonuclease deficient pol-Îł (exoâ) in premature aging mouse models. To measure the pausing, we analyzed simulation results for the longest time for the polymerase to move forward one nucleotide along the DNA strand. Our model of the exoâ polymerase had extremely long pauses, with a 30 to 300-fold increase in the time required for the longest single forward step compared to the wild-type, while the naturally occurring A467T variant showed at most a doubling in the length of the pauses compared to the wild-type. We identified the cause of these differences in the polymerase pausing time to be the number of disassociations occurring in each forward step of the polymerase
Brazilian Guidelines for Hereditary Angioedema Management - 2017 Update Part 1: Definition, Classification and Diagnosis
Hereditary angioedema is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by recurrent angioedema attacks with the involvement of multiple organs. The disease is unknown to many health professionals and is therefore underdiagnosed. Patients who are not adequately diagnosed and treated have an estimated mortality rate ranging from 25% to 40% due to asphyxiation by laryngeal angioedema. Intestinal angioedema is another important and incapacitating presentation that may be the main or only manifestation during an attack. In this article, a group of experts from the âAssociação Brasileira de Alergia e Imunologia (ASBAI)â and the âGrupo de Estudos Brasileiro em Angioedema HereditĂĄrio (GEBRAEH)â has updated the Brazilian guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary angioedema
An Analysis of Enzyme Kinetics Data for Mitochondrial DNA Strand Termination by Nucleoside Reverse Transcription Inhibitors
Nucleoside analogs used in antiretroviral treatment have been associated with mitochondrial toxicity. The polymerase-Îł hypothesis states that this toxicity stems from the analogs' inhibition of the mitochondrial DNA polymerase (polymerase-Îł) leading to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) depletion. We have constructed a computational model of the interaction of polymerase-Îł with activated nucleoside and nucleotide analog drugs, based on experimentally measured reaction rates and base excision rates, together with the mtDNA genome size, the human mtDNA sequence, and mitochondrial dNTP concentrations. The model predicts an approximately 1000-fold difference in the activated drug concentration required for a 50% probability of mtDNA strand termination between the activated di-deoxy analogs d4T, ddC, and ddI (activated to ddA) and the activated forms of the analogs 3TC, TDF, AZT, FTC, and ABC. These predictions are supported by experimental and clinical data showing significantly greater mtDNA depletion in cell culture and patient samples caused by the di-deoxy analog drugs. For zidovudine (AZT) we calculated a very low mtDNA replication termination probability, in contrast to its reported mitochondrial toxicity in vitro and clinically. Therefore AZT mitochondrial toxicity is likely due to a mechanism that does not involve strand termination of mtDNA replication
Multiple populations in globular clusters. Lessons learned from the Milky Way globular clusters
Recent progress in studies of globular clusters has shown that they are not
simple stellar populations, being rather made of multiple generations. Evidence
stems both from photometry and spectroscopy. A new paradigm is then arising for
the formation of massive star clusters, which includes several episodes of star
formation. While this provides an explanation for several features of globular
clusters, including the second parameter problem, it also opens new
perspectives about the relation between globular clusters and the halo of our
Galaxy, and by extension of all populations with a high specific frequency of
globular clusters, such as, e.g., giant elliptical galaxies. We review progress
in this area, focusing on the most recent studies. Several points remain to be
properly understood, in particular those concerning the nature of the polluters
producing the abundance pattern in the clusters and the typical timescale, the
range of cluster masses where this phenomenon is active, and the relation

FRA-1 protein overexpression is a feature of hyperplastic and neoplastic breast disorders
BACKGROUND: Fos-related antigen 1 (FRA-1) is an immediate early gene encoding a member of AP-1 family of transcription factors involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and other biological processes. fra-1 gene overexpression has an important role in the process of cellular transformation, and our previous studies suggest FRA-1 protein detection as a useful tool for the diagnosis of thyroid neoplasias. Here we investigate the expression of the FRA-1 protein in benign and malignant breast tissues by immunohistochemistry, Western blot, RT-PCR and qPCR analysis, to evaluate its possible help in the diagnosis and prognosis of breast neoplastic diseases. METHODS: We investigate the expression of the FRA-1 protein in 70 breast carcinomas and 30 benign breast diseases by immunohistochemistry, Western blot, RT-PCR and qPCR analysis. RESULTS: FRA-1 protein was present in all of the carcinoma samples with an intense staining in the nucleus. Positive staining was also found in most of fibroadenomas, but in this case the staining was present both in the nucleus and cytoplasm, and the number of positive cells was lower than in carcinomas. Similar results were obtained from the analysis of breast hyperplasias, with no differences in FRA-1 expression level between typical and atypical breast lesions; however the FRA-1 protein localization is mainly nuclear in the atypical hyperplasias. In situ breast carcinomas showed a pattern of FRA-1 protein expression very similar to that observed in atypical hyperplasias. Conversely, no FRA-1 protein was detectable in 6 normal breast tissue samples used as controls. RT-PCR and qPCR analysis confirmed these results. Similar results were obtained analysing FRA-1 expression in fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) samples. CONCLUSION: The data shown here suggest that FRA-1 expression, including its intracellular localization, may be considered a useful marker for hyperplastic and neoplastic proliferative breast disorders
