A Study of Memetic Search with Multi-parent Combination for UBQP

We present a multi-parent hybrid genetic–tabu algorithm (denoted by GTA) for the Unconstrained Binary Quadratic Programming (UBQP) problem, by incorporating tabu search into the framework of genetic algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new multi-parent combination operator for generating offspring solutions. A pool updating strategy based on a quality-and-distance criterion is used to manage the population. Experimental comparisons with leading methods for the UBQP problem on 25 large public instances demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed algorithm in terms of both solution quality and computational efficiency

Socioeconomic disparities in physical health among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Western Australia

Objective. Few empirical studies have specifically examined the relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and health in Indigenous populations of Australia. We sought to provide insights into the nature of this relationship by examining socio-economic disparities in physical health outcomes among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Western Australia. Design. We used a diverse set of health and SES indicators from a representative survey conducted in 20002002 on the health and development of 5289 Indigenous children aged 017 years in Western Australia. Analysis was conducted using multivariate logistic regression within a multilevel framework. Results. After controlling for age and sex, we found statistically significant socio- economic disparities in health in almost half of the associations that were investigated, although the direction, shape and magnitude of associations differed. For ear infections, recurring chest infections and sensory function problems, the patterns were generally consistent with a positive socio-economic gradient where better health was associated with higher SES. The reverse pattern was found for asthma, accidents and injuries, and oral health problems, although this was primarily observed for area-level SES indicators. Conclusion. Conventional notions of social position and class have some influence on the physical health of Indigenous children, although the diversity of results implies that there are other ways of conceptualising and measuring SES that are important for Indigenous populations. We need to consider factors that relate specifically to Indigenous circumstances and culture in the past and present day, and give more thought to how we measure social position in the Indigenous community, to gain a better understanding of the pathways from SES to Indigenous child health

Elementary landscape decomposition of the 0-1 unconstrained quadratic optimization

Journal of Heuristics, 19(4), pp.711-728Landscapes’ theory provides a formal framework in which combinatorial optimization problems can be theoretically characterized as a sum of an especial kind of landscape called elementary landscape. The elementary landscape decomposition of a combinatorial optimization problem is a useful tool for understanding the problem. Such decomposition provides an additional knowledge on the problem that can be exploited to explain the behavior of some existing algorithms when they are applied to the problem or to create new search methods for the problem. In this paper we analyze the 0-1 Unconstrained Quadratic Optimization from the point of view of landscapes’ theory. We prove that the problem can be written as the sum of two elementary components and we give the exact expressions for these components. We use the landscape decomposition to compute autocorrelation measures of the problem, and show some practical applications of the decomposition.Spanish Ministry of Sci- ence and Innovation and FEDER under contract TIN2008-06491-C04-01 (the M∗ project). A novel Csp 3-Csp 3 oxidative conjugation with compounds containing an activated methylene group has been described in the case of 1-alkyl-4-aryl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridines. It was shown that treatment of the indicated Δ3-piperidines with methyl ketones or nitromethane in the presence of KMnO4 gives their 2-acylmethylene- or 2-nitromethylene derivatives respectively. ©1997 Plenum Publishing Corporation

Oxidative coupling of 1-alkyl(benzyl)-4-(γ-pyridyl)-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridines with acetone in the presence of KMnO4 follows two pathways and yields both 1-R-2-(acetylmethylene)tetrahydropyridines and 1-R-3,4-dihydroxypiperidin-2-ones. When acetonitrile is used instead of acetone, the reaction under similar conditions occurs as selective ketodihydroxylation of the starting piperideines yielding 1-R-3,4-dihydroxy-4-(γ-pyridyl)piperidin-2-ones. The molecular and crystal structures of one of these products (R = Et) was studied by X-ray diffraction analysis
