Recent palaeoenvironmental evidence for the processing of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) in eastern England during the medieval period
[FIRST PARAGRAPH] Hemp (Cannabissativa L.)— whose origins as a domesticated plant probably lie in C.Asia — has been cultivated in England since at least a.d.800 (and before this perhaps in the Roman Period), mainly for its ¿bre, which was used to make sails, ropes, ¿shing nets and clothes, as well as for the oil from hempseed. Hemp cultivation may have reached a peak during the early 16th century, when Henry VIII decreed that increased hemp production was required to supply the expanding navy. Evidence for the locations where the crop was cultivated and processed is available in several different forms, including written evidence in parish records and government reports, place-name evidence (e.g.Hempholme and some instances of Hempstead), and features on old maps, such as Hempis¿eld (hemp¿eld)
Asymptotic distribution theory for break point estimators in models estimated via 2SLS
In this paper, we present a limiting distribution theory for the break point estimator in a linear regression model with multiple structural breaks obtained by minimizing a Two Stage Least Squares (2SLS) objective function. Our analysis covers both the case in which the reduced form for the endogenous regressors is stable and the case in which it is unstable with multiple structural breaks. For stable reduced forms, we present a limiting distribution theory under two different scenarios: in the case where the parameter change is of fixed magnitude, it is shown that the resulting distribution depends on the distribution of the data and is not of much practical use for inference; in the case where the magnitude of the parameter change shrinks with the sample size, it is shown that the resulting distribution can be used to construct approximate large sample confidence intervals for the break points. For unstable reduced forms, we consider the case where the magnitudes of the parameter changes in both the equation of interest and the reduced forms shrink with the sample size at potentially different rates and not necessarily the same locations in the sample. The resulting limiting distribution theory can be used to construct approximate large sample confidence intervals for the break points. The finite sample performance of these intervals are analyzed in a small simulation study and the intervals are illustrated via an application to the New Keynesian Phillips curve
On Convergence Properties of Shannon Entropy
Convergence properties of Shannon Entropy are studied. In the differential
setting, it is shown that weak convergence of probability measures, or
convergence in distribution, is not enough for convergence of the associated
differential entropies. A general result for the desired differential entropy
convergence is provided, taking into account both compactly and uncompactly
supported densities. Convergence of differential entropy is also characterized
in terms of the Kullback-Liebler discriminant for densities with fairly general
supports, and it is shown that convergence in variation of probability measures
guarantees such convergence under an appropriate boundedness condition on the
densities involved. Results for the discrete setting are also provided,
allowing for infinitely supported probability measures, by taking advantage of
the equivalence between weak convergence and convergence in variation in this

The Water–Amorphous Calcium Carbonate Interface and Its Interactions with Amino Acids
Amorphous calcium carbonate is often the first phase to precipitate during the mineralisation of calcium carbonate, before the formation of one of the crystalline polymorphs. In vivo, this phase is believed to be essential for the manufacture of minerals displaying non-equilibrium morphologies. The precipitation of this, usually transient, phase and its subsequent transformation into one of the crystalline polymorphs can be controlled by organic molecules. Here, we present a series of Molecular Dynamics simulations that explore the amorphous calcium carbonate – water interface, the attachment of amino acids onto both hydrous and anhydrous amorphous calcium carbonate and their effect on the surface. The results show that surface ions have a different coordination number distribution from bulk ions and can diffuse up to two orders of magnitude faster than their bulk counterparts, suggesting that crystallisation is much more likely to occur in this region. All the amino acids investigated bind to the amorphous calcium carbonate surfaces. However, acidic amino acids have a clear preference for the surface of amorphous CaCO3.H2O. The favoured mode of interaction of the amino acids is through amine and/or guanidine moieties. The important ramifications of the results for our understanding of protein-mineral interactions are discussed
Rapid increase in southern elephant seal genetic diversity after a founder event
Genetic diversity provides the raw material for populations to respond to changing environmental conditions. The evolution of diversity within populations is based on the accumulation of mutations and their retention or loss through selection and genetic drift, while migration can also introduce new variation. However, the extent to which population growth and sustained large population size can lead to rapid and significant increases in diversity has not been widely investigated. Here, we assess this empirically by applying approximate Bayesian computation to a novel ancient DNA dataset that spans the life of a southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) population, from initial founding approximately 7000 years ago to eventual extinction within the past millennium. We find that rapid population growth and sustained large population size can explain substantial increases in population genetic diversity over a period of several hundred generations, subsequently lost when the population went to extinction. Results suggest that the impact of diversity introduced through migration was relatively minor. We thus demonstrate, by examining genetic diversity across the life of a population, that environmental change could generate the raw material for adaptive evolution over a very short evolutionary time scale through rapid establishment of a large, stable population

An archive of good roads and racial capitalism in North Carolina
“Good Roads, leading to Winston-Salem, N.C.,” a postcard produced by the national retailer S.H. Kress & Co. to sell in its North Carolina five-and-dime stores, pulls us in different directions at once (Figure 1). The road, well-graded, neatly surfaced, and bright, is the dominant element of the frame, winding gently away from the viewer over the piedmont to the landscape’s vanishing point. In the foreground, an open-topped automobile, seemingly in motion, is about to zoom past, an ambiguous chauffeur at the wheel driving a finely dressed White lady, who appears elegant and composed in the back seat. The dark figures of what appear to be mules stand yoked to the right of the roadbed, while three tiny human figures can be discerned down the road beyond them, perhaps watching the second car go by. The lines of the road, suggesting mobility and flow, contrast with relative stasis of the forests and fields that the road bisects. In the face of this paradox, the image evokes a neat sense of order and harmony, a timelessness that, like more classical forms of landscape (Cosgrove, 1990), tends to erase the conditions of its production
Large extra dimensions, the galaxy power spectrum and the end of inflation
We consider the production of gravitational KK modes via cosmological
photon-photon and electron-positron annihilation in models with large
factorisable extra dimensions. We place constraints on this production using
recent results from a joint analysis of the power spectra of the 2dF Galaxy
Redshift Survey (2dFGS) and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies.
We obtain a more accurate upper limit for the temperature corresponding to
matter-radiation equality and show that, even for the case of 6 extra
dimensions and a fundamental scale of 1 TeV, a period of inflation is required
