    La lagune de Saquarema (Brésil) : hydroclimat, seston et éléments biogéniques au cours d'un cycle annuel

    La lagune de Saquarema (située entre 42° et 43° de longitude ouest et à environ 23° de latitude sud, de superficie et de profondeur respectivement égales à 23 km2 et 1,15 m) fait partie d'une série de lagunes cotiÚres de l'Etat de Rio Janeiro soumises à des degrés divers à la pression anthropique. Une description de son environnement est présentée, portant sur l'évolution au cours de 1987, de l'hydroclimat, du seston et des éléments biogéniques dissous. Il est observé une grande variabilité temporelle contrÎlée principalement par l'alternance brusque d'eaux d'origines continentale et marine et aussi un gradient spatial bien marqué provenant d'une subdivision de la lagune en un compartiment à plus forte influence marine atteint par la pollution domestique. Cette lagune passe d'un état modérément eutrophe en hiver (par exemple Chla = 28 à 40 microg/l) à un état hypereutrophe en été (par exemple Chla = 300 microg/l) qui peut conduire à une crise dystrophique suivie de mortalité de poissons (cas d'avril 1987).     Bond between steel and concrete made with ceramic waste aggregate

    The reduction of natural resources combined with a substantial increase in the generation of solid waste in large urban centers, justifies the search for methods of reusing the construction industry waste. The ceramic industry has a high disposal rate during the manufacturing, transportation and eventual replacement of its products. In this case, research on the reuse of ceramic materials is urgent. A possible solution is the employment of ceramic waste as a coarse aggregate in structural concrete. Therefore, the mechanical properties of this new mix of concrete have to be assessed. This study evaluates the bond strength between steel rebar and concrete with ceramic waste aggregates, by means of the pull-out test method, proposed by RILEM-FIP-CEB (1978). Three concrete mixtures were produced: a mixture without any replacement, and two other mixtures with gradual substitution of natural coarse aggregate by ceramic coarse aggregate (40% and 100% substitution, in volume). Nine cylindrical specimens, three for each of the concrete mixtures, were evaluated in laboratorial conditions.     Este trabalho investigou os fatores associados Ă  atividade fĂ­sica em quatro diferentes domĂ­nios e o desempenho de atividades sociais em 2.344 idosos (72,3 ± 5,5 anos; 65,6% mulheres) sem dĂ©ficit cognitivo, residentes na comunidade de seis localidades brasileiras. Uma versĂŁo adaptada do Minnesota Leisure Time Activity Questionnaire foi utilizada para avaliar a atividade fĂ­sica em quatro diferentes domĂ­nios. Um inventĂĄrio de atividade social foi desenvolvido para a pesquisa. Idade, gĂȘnero e renda familiar foram avaliados por autorrelato. Foram realizadas comparaçÔes de frequĂȘncias e anĂĄlises de regressĂŁo logĂ­stica. Todas as variĂĄveis sociodemogrĂĄficas demonstraram afetar o perfil de engajamento em atividade da amostra. Ter maior renda familiar comprovou associação a nĂ­vel elevado de atividade fĂ­sica no lazer, no trabalho e no deslocamento, resultado apoiado pela literatura. O gĂȘnero associado a alto nĂ­vel de atividade variou de acordo com o domĂ­nio especĂ­fico do indicador de atividade analisado. An adapted version of Minnesota Leisure Time Activity Questionnaire was used to measure physical activity in four different domains. An inventory of social activities was developed for research. Age, gender and family income were assessed by self-report. Comparisons of frequencies and logistic regression analyzes were performed. All sociodemographic variables were affecting the activity engagement profile of the sample. Have higher family income showed association with high level of leisure time, occupational and transportation physical activity, result supported by the literature. The gender associated with high level of activity varied according to the specific domain of the analyzed activity indicator. Have less age proved to be associated with higher level of activity in all indicators associated with age, highlighting the increasing age as the major barrier to performance physical and social activities in old age.     Lecanodiaspis dendrobii Douglas, 1892 (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Lecanodiaspididae) and the associated parasitoid Cephaleta sp. (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) are reported for the first time in Brazil. Specimens of this scale insect were collected on branches and stems of Acacia mangium Willd., Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit (Fabaceae), Morus nigra L. (Moraceae), Citrus reticulata Blanco (Rutaceae), Tectona grandis L. f. (Verbenaceae), Anacardium occidentale (Anacardiaceae), Annona squamosa L. andXylopia aromatica (Lam.) Mart. (Annonaceae), in three municipalities of the Roraima state. All plants here mentioned are recorded for the first time as a host for L. dendrobii.     Genetic characterization of interleukins (IL-1α, IL-1ÎČ, IL-2, IL-4, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12A, IL-12B, IL-15 and IL-18) with relevant biological roles in lagomorphs

    DisponĂ­vel em: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/pmid/26395994/ILs, as essential innate immune modulators, are involved in an array of biological processes. In the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) IL-1α, IL-1ÎČ, IL-2, IL-4, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12A, IL-12B, IL-15 and IL-18 have been implicated in inflammatory processes and in the immune response against rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus and myxoma virus infections. In this study we characterized these ILs in six Lagomorpha species (European rabbit, pygmy rabbit, two cottontail rabbit species, European brown hare and American pika). Overall, these ILs are conserved between lagomorphs, including in their exon/intron structure. Most differences were observed between leporids and American pika. Indeed, when comparing both, some relevant differences were observed in American pika, such as the location of the stop codon in IL-1α and IL-2, the existence of a different transcript in IL8 and the number of cysteine residues in IL-1ÎČ. Changes at N-glycosylation motifs were also detected in IL-1, IL-10, IL-12B and IL-15. IL-1α is the protein that presents the highest evolutionary distances, which is in contrast to IL-12A where the distances between lagomorphs are the lowest.     Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the bovine leptin gene and their association with carcass and efficiency traits, and endocrine profiles, in female Angus cows

    One hundred and fifty female Angus cattle were genotyped for the bovine leptin gene SNPs UASMS1, UASMS2, E2FB and E2JW. Net Feed Intake (NFI) Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and E2JW SNP data was also acquired from 169 Angus cattle that originated from Trangie Research Station, NSW, and were selected for a divergence in feed efficiency. The E2JW SNP was associated with NFI, NFI EBV and P8 fatness. The UASMS1 and UASMS2 SNPs were associated with circulating leptin concentrations. These particular associations have not been reported previously but similar associations have reported in North American studies. The inconsistent associations suggest that these SNPs are not good candidates for marker-assisted selection for NFI. Also, the investigation of associations with endocrine profiles that reflect body composition such as leptin, requires genotyping of a larger number of Australian cattle than was possible in this experiment

    The concentration of some anions (Cl, F, NO3, and SO4), cations (Na, K, Ca, and Mg), pH and conductivity was determined in seven sampling points in the Serra da Estrela Mountains (Portugal) to verify if the application of road deicing with salt provokes impact in the water quality. Multivariate chemometric data analysis techniques of clustering and factor analysis were used. Preliminary analysis shows an overall conductivity increase in late spring and a decrease in late summer. A strong association between sodium chloride and the conductivity was observed by cluster analysis. Factor analysis supports the previous results and shows that the variation of the concentration of sodium chloride is the main source of the variance of the data along the year. In conclusion, the spreading of salt during the winter creates a local and seasonal impact on the water quality

    Zooplankton composition and distribution off the coast of Galicia, Spain

    During June and September 1984, zooplankton samples were collected with other hydrographic and biological data along the Galician coast (NW of Spain). In June copepods contributed -60% to the total zooplankton community, with larvaceans, siphonophores and cladocerans also abundant. In September >90% of the zooplankton sampled were copepods. The dominant species of copepods in both June and September were Acartia e/ausi, Paracalanus parvus and Temora longicornis. The meroplankton was dominated by echinoderms, bryozoans, barnacle larvae and bivalve larvae. In June the average zooplankton biomass was 31.08 mg e m-3; the September average was 41.69 mg e m-3 The relationship between the slopes of the regression equations (biomass versus abundance) suggests that the zooplankton assemblage in June was composed by larger animals than in September. The major concentration of zooplankton was between O and SO m, with both June and September daytime surface samples having 6-7 times the amount of organisms than the lower water column (50-100 m). There were no distinct differences in total zooplankton abundances at the inshore and offshore stations; however, the inshore stations often had a higher percentage of meroplankton than the offshore stations. In June zooplankton abundance at the northern transects and the western transects was similar. In September there were greater concentrations of zooplankton in the western Galician shelf as compared with the northern shelf. These differences in the horizontal distribution of the zooplankton were related to upwelling events.Postprin

    Mass Spectrum of Strings in Anti de Sitter Spacetime

    We perform string quantization in anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The string motion is stable, oscillatory in time with real frequencies ωn=n2+m2αâ€Č2H2\omega_n= \sqrt{n^2+m^2\alpha'^2H^2} and the string size and energy are bounded. The string fluctuations around the center of mass are well behaved. We find the mass formula which is also well behaved in all regimes. There is an {\it infinite} number of states with arbitrarily high mass in AdS (in de Sitter (dS) there is a {\it finite} number of states only). The critical dimension at which the graviton appears is D=25,D=25, as in de Sitter space. A cosmological constant Λ≠0\Lambda\neq 0 (whatever its sign) introduces a {\it fine structure} effect (splitting of levels) in the mass spectrum at all states beyond the graviton. The high mass spectrum changes drastically with respect to flat Minkowski spacetime. For Î›âˆŒâˆŁÎ›âˆŁN2,\Lambda\sim \mid\Lambda\mid N^2, {\it independent} of αâ€Č,\alpha', and the level spacing {\it grows} with the eigenvalue of the number operator, N.N. The density of states ρ(m)\rho(m) grows like \mbox{Exp}[(m/\sqrt{\mid\Lambda\mid}\;)^{1/2}] (instead of \rho(m)\sim\mbox{Exp}[m\sqrt{\alpha'}] as in Minkowski space), thus {\it discarding} the existence of a critical string temperature. For the sake of completeness, we also study the quantum strings in the black string background, where strings behave, in many respects, as in the ordinary black hole backgrounds.
