Star Diblock Copolymer Concentration Dictates the Degree of Dispersion of Carbon Black Particles in Nonpolar Media: Bridging Flocculation versus Steric Stabilization
The solution behavior of a polystyrene–hydrogenated polyisoprene star diblock copolymer (Mn ∼ 384 K; 6 mol % polystyrene) is examined in nonpolar media. Variable temperature 1H NMR studies using deuterated n-dodecane confirm that the outer polystyrene blocks are only partially solvated in n-dodecane at 25 °C: the apparent polystyrene content of 3.2 ± 0.2 mol % remains essentially constant on heating up to 100 °C. Physical adsorption of this star diblock copolymer onto carbon black particles is examined, with particular attention being paid to the effect of copolymer concentration on colloidal stability. An isotherm is constructed for copolymer adsorption onto carbon black from n-dodecane at 20 °C using a supernatant depletion assay based on UV spectroscopy analysis of the aromatic chromophore in the polystyrene block. Langmuir-type adsorption is observed with a maximum adsorbed amount, Γ, of ∼2.2 ± 0.1 mg m–2. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis is used to directly determine the amount of adsorbed copolymer on the carbon black particles, which are essentially incombustible under an inert atmosphere. Analytical centrifugation, optical microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy studies indicate that the star diblock copolymer acts as an effective flocculant at low concentration, with steric stabilization only being observed above a certain critical copolymer concentration (∼5.5% w/w based on carbon black). This is attributed to the spatial location of the polystyrene block and the star copolymer architecture, which enables copolymer adsorption onto multiple carbon black particles at low coverage, leading to bridging flocculation. Above 5.5% w/w copolymer, the surface coverage is sufficiently high that all of the polystyrene “stickers” adsorb onto single carbon black particles, resulting in colloidally stable, sterically stabilized carbon black dispersions. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is also used to characterize the copolymer-coated carbon black particles: this technique provides useful complementary insights regarding the rather subtle changes in the fractal morphology that occur with increasing copolymer concentration. Moreover, SAXS also provides direct evidence for the presence of the copolymer chains at the particle surface
Fluctuation-dissipation relations in the non-equilibrium critical dynamics of Ising models
We investigate the relation between two-time, multi-spin, correlation and
response functions in the non-equilibrium critical dynamics of Ising models in
d=1 and d=2 spatial dimensions. In these non-equilibrium situations, the
fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) is not satisfied. We find FDT
`violations' qualitatively similar to those reported in various glassy
materials, but quantitatively dependent on the chosen observable, in contrast
to the results obtained in infinite-range glass models. Nevertheless, all FDT
violations can be understood by considering separately the contributions from
large wavevectors, which are at quasi-equilibrium and obey FDT, and from small
wavevectors where a generalized FDT holds with a non-trivial limit
fluctuation-dissipation ratio X. In d=1, we get X = 1/2 for spin observables,
which measure the orientation of domains, while X = 0 for observables that are
sensitive to the domain-wall motion. Numerical simulations in d=2 reveal a
unique X = 0.34 for all observables. Measurement protocols for X are discussed
in detail. Our results suggest that the definition of an effective temperature
Teff = T / X for large length scales is generically possible in non-equilibrium

Slow relaxation due to optimization and restructuring: Solution on a hierarchical lattice
Motivated by the large strain shear of loose granular materials we introduced
a model which consists of consecutive optimization and restructuring steps
leading to a self organization of a density field. The extensive connections to
other models of statistical phyics are discussed. We investigate our model on a
hierarchical lattice which allows an exact asymptotic renormalization
treatment. A surprisingly close analogy is observed between the simulation
results on the regular and the hierarchical lattices. The dynamics is
characterized by the breakdown of ergodicity, by unusual system size effects in
the development of the average density as well as by the age distribution, the

Thermal noise properties of two aging materials
In this lecture we review several aspects of the thermal noise properties in
two aging materials: a polymer and a colloidal glass.
The measurements have been performed after a quench for the polymer and
during the transition from a fluid-like to a solid-like state for the gel. Two
kind of noise has been measured: the electrical noise and the mechanical noise.
For both materials we have observed that the electric noise is characterized
by a strong intermittency, which induces a large violation of the Fluctuation
Dissipation Theorem (FDT) during the aging time, and may persist for several
hours at low frequency. The statistics of these intermittent signals and their
dependance on the quench speed for the polymer or on sample concentration for
the gel are studied. The results are in a qualitative agreement with recent
models of aging, that predict an intermittent dynamics. For the mechanical
noise the results are unclear. In the polymer the mechanical thermal noise is
still intermittent whereas for the gel the violation of FDT, if it exists, is

Outstanding challenges in the transferability of ecological models
Predictive models are central to many scientific disciplines and vital for informing management in a rapidly changing world. However, limited understanding of the accuracy and precision of models transferred to novel conditions (their 'transferability') undermines confidence in their predictions. Here, 50 experts identified priority knowledge gaps which, if filled, will most improve model transfers. These are summarized into six technical and six fundamental challenges, which underlie the combined need to intensify research on the determinants of ecological predictability, including species traits and data quality, and develop best practices for transferring models. Of high importance is the identification of a widely applicable set of transferability metrics, with appropriate tools to quantify the sources and impacts of prediction uncertainty under novel conditions.Katherine L. Recommendations for the conduct of clinical trials for drugs to treat or prevent sarcopenia
PURPOSE: Sarcopenia is an age-related muscle condition which is frequently a precursor of frailty, mobility disability and premature death. It has a high prevalence in older populations and presents a considerable social and economic burden. Potential treatments are under development but, as yet, no guidelines support regulatory studies for new drugs to manage sarcopenia. The objective of this position paper is therefore to suggest a set of potential endpoints and target population definitions to stimulate debate and progress within the medico-scientific and regulatory communities. METHODS: A multidisciplinary expert working group was hosted by the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis, which reviewed and discussed the recent literature from a perspective of clinical experience and guideline development. Relevant parallels were drawn from the development of definition of osteoporosis as a disease and clinical assessment of pharmaceutical treatments for that indication. RESULTS: A case-finding decision tree is briefly reviewed with a discussion of recent prevalence estimations of different relevant threshold values. The selection criteria for patients in regulatory studies are discussed according to the aims of the investigation (sarcopenia prevention or treatment) and the stage of project development. The possible endpoints of such studies are reviewed and a plea is made for the establishment of a core outcome set to be used in all clinical trials of sarcopenia. CONCLUSIONS: The current lack of guidelines for the assessment of new therapeutic treatments for sarcopenia could potentially hinder the delivery of effective medicines to patients at risk
Recent sarcopenia definitions—prevalence, agreement and mortality associations among men: findings from population‐based cohorts
Background
The 2019 European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) and the Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) have recently proposed sarcopenia definitions. However, comparisons of the performance of these approaches in terms of thresholds employed, concordance in individuals and prediction of important health-related outcomes such as death are limited. We addressed this in a large multinational assembly of cohort studies that included information on lean mass, muscle strength, physical performance and health outcomes.
Methods
White men from the Health Aging and Body Composition (Health ABC) Study, Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study cohorts (Sweden, USA), the Hertfordshire Cohort Study (HCS) and the Sarcopenia and Physical impairment with advancing Age (SarcoPhAge) Study were analysed. Appendicular lean mass (ALM) was ascertained using DXA; muscle strength by grip dynamometry; and usual gait speed over courses of 2.4–6 m. Deaths were recorded and verified. Definitions of sarcopenia were as follows: EWGSOP2 (grip strength <27 kg and ALM index <7.0 kg/m2), SDOC (grip strength <35.5 kg and gait speed <0.8 m/s) and Modified SDOC (grip strength <35.5 kg and gait speed <1.0 m/s). Cohen's kappa statistic was used to assess agreement between original definitions (EWGSOP2 and SDOC). Presence versus absence of sarcopenia according to each definition in relation to mortality risk was examined using Cox regression with adjustment for age and weight; estimates were combined across cohorts using random-effects meta-analysis.
Results
Mean (SD) age of participants (n = 9170) was 74.3 (4.9) years; 5929 participants died during a mean (SD) follow-up of 12.1 (5.5) years. The proportion with sarcopenia according to each definition was EWGSOP2 (1.1%), SDOC (1.7%) and Modified SDOC (5.3%). Agreement was weak between EWGSOP2 and SDOC (κ = 0.17). Pooled hazard ratios (95% CI) for mortality for presence versus absence of each definition were EWGSOP2 [1.76 (1.42, 2.18), I2: 0.0%]; SDOC [2.75 (2.28, 3.31), I2: 0.0%]; and Modified SDOC [1.93 (1.54, 2.41), I2: 58.3%].
Conclusions
There was low prevalence and poor agreement among recent sarcopenia definitions in community-dwelling cohorts of older white men. All indices of sarcopenia were associated with mortality. The strong relationship between sarcopenia and mortality, regardless of the definition, illustrates that identification of appropriate management and lifecourse intervention strategies for this condition is of paramount importance
Predictive value of sarcopenia components for all-cause mortality: findings from population-based cohorts
Background
Low grip strength and gait speed are associated with mortality. However, investigation of the additional mortality risk explained by these measures, over and above other factors, is limited.
Aim
We examined whether grip strength and gait speed improve discriminative capacity for mortality over and above more readily obtainable clinical risk factors.
Methods
Participants from the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study, Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study, and the Hertfordshire Cohort Study were analysed. Appendicular lean mass (ALM) was ascertained using DXA; muscle strength by grip dynamometry; and usual gait speed over 2.4–6 m. Verified deaths were recorded. Associations between sarcopenia components and mortality were examined using Cox regression with cohort as a random effect; discriminative capacity was assessed using Harrell’s Concordance Index (C-index).
Results
Mean (SD) age of participants (n = 8362) was 73.8(5.1) years; 5231(62.6%) died during a median follow-up time of 13.3 years. Grip strength (hazard ratio (95% CI) per SD decrease: 1.14 (1.10,1.19)) and gait speed (1.21 (1.17,1.26)), but not ALM index (1.01 (0.95,1.06)), were associated with mortality in mutually-adjusted models after accounting for age, sex, BMI, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, ethnicity, education, history of fractures and falls, femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD), self-rated health, cognitive function and number of comorbidities. However, a model containing only age and sex as exposures gave a C-index (95% CI) of 0.65(0.64,0.66), which only increased to 0.67(0.67,0.68) after inclusion of grip strength and gait speed.
Conclusions
Grip strength and gait speed may generate only modest adjunctive risk information for mortality compared with other more readily obtainable risk factors
The country of brand communication in the retail setting: An analysis of Italian products in China
The aim of this paper is to investigate the role of country of brand (COB) communication within the retail environment of emerging markets. Drawing from the literature on store image, we developed a framework to analyse static and dynamic elements of COB communication. By adopting an inductive approach, we analysed COB use in a sample of 20 stores of Italian fashion brands in China using the mystery shopping technique. Given the increasing growth of e-retailing in China, the in-store observation is complemented by an analysis of the use of COB within the brand's local website and e-commerce page. In order to have a multi-layered representation of the phenomenon, in-depth interviews with managers of Italian firms in fashion industry are carried out. Findings confirm that retailing represents a primary communication channel for firms operating in China; however, the results of the participant observation show that COB is a cue information utilised only by a small percentage of the sample, mainly in a textual and iconic way. Managerial implications are discussed on the extent to which COB communication in store should be managed within an effective marketing strategy in line with the country and consumer characteristics in order to enhance the brand image in a growing market like China
