    Hydromedusae off the Orange River Mouth, Southern Africa

    A total of 242 zooplankton samples from the upper 100 m of the water column was collected discontinuously from March 1997 to January 1999 off the Orange River mouth on the west coast of southern Africa. Six species of hydromedusae were recovered at generally low abundance, of which Euphysa aurata, Leuckartia octona and Proboscidactyla menoni were dominant. E. aurata and L. octona showed evidence of seasonality in abundance. The low diversity of the fauna was remarkable and it is hypothesized that this might be attributable in part to sedimentation from the Orange River, and in part to locally weak circulation and the wide extent of the continental shelf.Web of Scienc

    Applying Rule Ensembles to the Search for Super-Symmetry at the Large Hadron Collider

    In this note we give an example application of a recently presented predictive learning method called Rule Ensembles. The application we present is the search for super-symmetric particles at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, we consider the problem of separating the background coming from top quark production from the signal of super-symmetric particles. The method is based on an expansion of base learners, each learner being a rule, i.e. a combination of cuts in the variable space describing signal and background. These rules are generated from an ensemble of decision trees. One of the results of the method is a set of rules (cuts) ordered according to their importance, which gives useful tools for diagnosis of the model. We also compare the method to a number of other multivariate methods, in particular Artificial Neural Networks, the likelihood method and the recently presented boosted decision tree method. We find better performance of Rule Ensembles in all cases. For example for a given significance the amount of data needed to claim SUSY discovery could be reduced by 15 % using Rule Ensembles as compared to using a likelihood method.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, replaced to match version accepted for publication in JHE

    Optimal asset allocation for a DC plan with partial information under inflation and mortality risks

    We study an asset allocation stochastic problem for a defined-contribution pension plan during the accumulation phase. We consider a financial market composed of a risk-free asset, an inflation-linked bond and the risky asset. The fund manager aims to maximize the expected power utility derived from the terminal wealth. Our solution allows one to incorporate a clause which allows for the distribution of a member’s premiums to his surviving dependents, should the member die before retirement. Besides the mortality risk, our optimization problem takes into account salary and the inflation risks. We then obtain closed form solutions for the asset allocation problem using a sufficient maximum principle approach for the problem with partial information.     The challenge of reconstructing the Phanerozoic sea level and the Pacific Basin tectonics

    The relationships between the interior dynamics of our planet and global sea level can be unravelled when plate-tectonic reconstructions are available for the entire Earth. A review of global tectonics reveals significant deficiencies in our understanding of the geodynamic evolution of the Pacific (Panthalassa or Proto-Pacific) during the Cambrian-Jurassic time-span. This particular, but major, shortcoming presents a true challenge for modern geoscientists, who are encouraged to produce a detailed plate-tectonic reconstruction of the Pacific for the pre-Cretaceous in order to advance our understanding of Phanerozoic sea-level change. A set of approaches, including geological/geophysical modelling, investigation of accretionary prisms, palaeobiogeographical studies, and careful examination of eustatic sea-level changes, are proposed that will help geoscientists tackle the challenge of understanding how Pacific geodynamics affected global sea level during the Phanerozoic

    Motivic Serre invariants, ramification, and the analytic Milnor fiber

    We show how formal and rigid geometry can be used in the theory of complex singularities, and in particular in the study of the Milnor fibration and the motivic zeta function. We introduce the so-called analytic Milnor fiber associated to the germ of a morphism f from a smooth complex algebraic variety X to the affine line. This analytic Milnor fiber is a smooth rigid variety over the field of Laurent series C((t)). Its etale cohomology coincides with the singular cohomology of the classical topological Milnor fiber of f; the monodromy transformation is given by the Galois action. Moreover, the points on the analytic Milnor fiber are closely related to the motivic zeta function of f, and the arc space of X. We show how the motivic zeta function can be recovered as some kind of Weil zeta function of the formal completion of X along the special fiber of f, and we establish a corresponding Grothendieck trace formula, which relates, in particular, the rational points on the analytic Milnor fiber over finite extensions of C((t)), to the Galois action on its etale cohomology. The general observation is that the arithmetic properties of the analytic Milnor fiber reflect the structure of the singularity of the germ f.Comment: Some minor errors corrected.     ESTIMATING GENOME-WIDE COPY NUMBER USING ALLELE SPECIFIC MIXTURE MODELS

    Genomic changes such as copy number alterations are thought to be one of the major underlying causes of human phenotypic variation among normal and disease subjects [23,11,25,26,5,4,7,18]. These include chromosomal regions with so-called copy number alterations: instead of the expected two copies, a section of the chromosome for a particular individual may have zero copies (homozygous deletion), one copy (hemizygous deletions), or more than two copies (amplifications). The canonical example is Down syndrome which is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. Identification of such abnormalities in smaller regions has been of great interest, because it is believed to be an underlying cause of cancer. More than one decade ago comparative genomic hybridization (CGH)technology was developed to detect copy number changes in a high-throughput fashion. However, this technology only provides a 10 MB resolution which limits the ability to detect copy number alterations spanning small regions. It is widely believed that a copy number alteration as small as one base can have significant downstream effects, thus microarray manufacturers have developed technologies that provide much higher resolution. Unfortunately, strong probe effects and variation introduced by sample preparation procedures have made single-point copy number estimates too imprecise to be useful. CGH arrays use a two-color hybridization, usually comparing a sample of interest to a reference sample, which to some degree removes the probe effect. However, the resolution is not nearly high enough to provide single-point copy number estimates. Various groups have proposed statistical procedures that pool data from neighboring locations to successfully improve precision. However, these procedure need to average across relatively large regions to work effectively thus greatly reducing the resolution. Recently, regression-type models that account for probe-effect have been proposed and appear to improve accuracy as well as precision. In this paper, we propose a mixture model solution specifically designed for single-point estimation, that provides various advantages over the existing methodology. We use a 314 sample database, constructed with public datasets, to motivate and fit models for the conditional distribution of the observed intensities given allele specific copy numbers. With the estimated models in place we can compute posterior probabilities that provide a useful prediction rule as well as a confidence measure for each call.     Nuclear Structure Functions in the Large x Large Q^2 Kinematic Region in Neutrino Deep Inelastic Scattering

    Data from the CCFR E770 Neutrino Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experiment at Fermilab contain events with large Bjorken x (x>0.7) and high momentum transfer (Q^2>50 (GeV/c)^2). A comparison of the data with a model based on no nuclear effects at large x, shows a significant excess of events in the data. Addition of Fermi gas motion of the nucleons in the nucleus to the model does not explain the excess. Adding a higher momentum tail due to the formation of ``quasi-deuterons'' makes some improvement. An exponentially falling F_2 \propto e^-s(x-x_0) at large x, predicted by ``multi-quark clusters'' and ``few-nucleon correlations'', can describe the data. A value of s=8.3 \pm 0.7(stat.)\pm 0.7(sys.) yields the best agreement with the data.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Sibmitted to PR
