Accelerating Universe from an Evolving Lambda in Higher Dimension
We find exact solutions in five dimensional inhomogeneous matter dominated
model with a varying cosmological constant. Adjusting arbitrary constants of
integration one can also achieve acceleration in our model. Aside from an
initial singularity our spacetime is regular everywhere including the centre of
the inhomogeneous distribution. We also study the analogous homogeneous
universe in (4+d) dimensions. Here an initially decelerating model is found to
give late acceleration in conformity with the current observational demands. We
also find that both anisotropy and number of dimensions have a role to play in
determining the time of flip, in fact the flip is delayed in multidimensional
models. Some astrophysical parameters like the age, luminosity distance etc are
also calculated and the influence of extra dimensions is briefly discussed.
Interestingly our model yields a larger age of the universe compared to many
other quintessential models.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure

Kang-Redner Anomaly in Cluster-Cluster Aggregation
The large time, small mass, asymptotic behavior of the average mass
distribution \pb is studied in a -dimensional system of diffusing
aggregating particles for . By means of both a renormalization
group computation as well as a direct re-summation of leading terms in the
small reaction-rate expansion of the average mass distribution, it is shown
that \pb \sim \frac{1}{t^d} (\frac{m^{1/d}}{\sqrt{t}})^{e_{KR}} for , where and . In two
dimensions, it is shown that \pb \sim \frac{\ln(m) \ln(t)}{t^2} for . Numerical simulations in two dimensions supporting the analytical
results are also presented.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, Revtex
Magnetic enhancement of CoZnFeO spinel oxide by mechanical milling
We report the magnetic properties of mechanically milled
CoZnFeO spinel oxide. After 24 hours milling of the
bulk sample, the XRD spectra show nanostructure with average particle size
20 nm. The as milled sample shows an enhancement in magnetization and
ordering temperature compared to the bulk sample. If the as milled sample is
annealed at different temperatures for the same duration, recrystallization
process occurs and approaches to the bulk structure on increasing the annealing
temperatures. The magnetization of the annealed samples first increases and
then decreases. At higher annealing temperature ( 1000C) the system
shows two coexisting magnetic phases {\it i.e.}, spin glass state and
ferrimagnetic state, similar to the as prepared bulk sample. The room
temperature M\"{o}ssbauer spectra of the as milled sample, annealed at
300C for different durations (upto 575 hours), suggest that the observed
change in magnetic behaviour is strongly related with cations redistribution
between tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (O) sites in the spinel structure. Apart
from the cation redistribution, we suggest that the enhancement of
magnetization and ordering temperature is related with the reduction of B site
spin canting and increase of strain induced anisotropic energy during
mechanical milling.Comment: 14 pages LaTeX, 10 ps figure
Dynamic Critical Behavior of the Chayes-Machta Algorithm for the Random-Cluster Model. I. Two Dimensions
We study, via Monte Carlo simulation, the dynamic critical behavior of the
Chayes-Machta dynamics for the Fortuin-Kasteleyn random-cluster model, which
generalizes the Swendsen-Wang dynamics for the q-state Potts ferromagnet to
non-integer q \ge 1. We consider spatial dimension d=2 and 1.25 \le q \le 4 in
steps of 0.25, on lattices up to 1024^2, and obtain estimates for the dynamic
critical exponent z_{CM}. We present evidence that when 1 \le q \lesssim 1.95
the Ossola-Sokal conjecture z_{CM} \ge \beta/\nu is violated, though we also
present plausible fits compatible with this conjecture. We show that the
Li-Sokal bound z_{CM} \ge \alpha/\nu is close to being sharp over the entire
range 1 \le q \le 4, but is probably non-sharp by a power. As a byproduct of
our work, we also obtain evidence concerning the corrections to scaling in
static observables.Comment: LaTeX2e, 75 pages including 26 Postscript figure
Antifungal Chromans Inhibiting the Mitochondrial Respiratory Chain of Pea Seeds and New Xanthones from Calophyllum caledonicum
Two new xanthones, caledonixanthone M 1 and caloxanthone L 2, and one new acid, caledonic acid 6 were isolated from the hexane-soluble extract of the stem bark of Calophyllum caledonicum. In the course of this phytochemical study, seven other known compounds - calothwaitesixanthone, calozeyloxanthone, allanxanthone, isoapetalic acid 3, calolongic acid 4, apetalic acid 5 and isocalolongic acid 7 - were isolated. Their antifungal activity against the growth of the human pathogenic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus was then investigated. The results indicated that the crude extract, calolongic acid 4 and isocalolongic acid 7 exhibited strong inhibitory effects with MIC80 values of 8, 4, 2 pg/mL, respectively. Besides, calolongic acid 4, its lactone derivative 4a and isocalolongic acid 7 markedly reduced the respiration of pea seed mitochondria
Bulk Electronic structure of NaCoO.1.3HO
High-energy (h = 5.95 keV) synchrotron Photoemission spectroscopy (PES)
is used to study bulk electronic structure of NaCoO.1.3HO,
the layered superconductor. In contrast to 3-dimensional doped Co oxides, Co
core level spectra show well-separated Co and Co ions.
Cluster calculations suggest low spin Co and Co character, and a
moderate on-site Coulomb correlation energy U3-5.5 eV. Photon
dependent valence band PES identifies Co and O derived
states, in near agreement with band structure calculations.Comment: 4 pages 4 figures Revised text added referenc

Demonstration of the temporal matter-wave Talbot effect for trapped matter waves
We demonstrate the temporal Talbot effect for trapped matter waves using
ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. We investigate the phase evolution of an
array of essentially non-interacting matter waves and observe matter-wave
collapse and revival in the form of a Talbot interference pattern. By using
long expansion times, we image momentum space with sub-recoil resolution,
allowing us to observe fractional Talbot fringes up to 10th order.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
