    Structure and clumping in the fast wind of NGC6543

    Far-UV spectroscopy from the FUSE satellite is analysed to uniquely probe spatial structure and clumping in the fast wind of the central star of the H-rich planetary nebula NGC6543 (HD164963). Time-series data of the unsaturated PV 1118, 1128 resonance line P Cygni profiles provide a very sensitive diagnostic of variable wind conditions in the outflow. We report on the discovery of episodic and recurrent optical depth enhancements in the PV absorption troughs, with some evidence for a 0.17-day modulation time-scale. SEI line-synthesis modelling is used to derive physical properties, including the optical depth evolution of individual `events'. The characteristics of these features are essentially identical to the `discrete absorption components' (DACs) commonly seen in the UV lines of massive OB stars. We have also employed the unified model atmosphere code CMFGEN to explore spectroscopic signatures of clumping, and report in particular on the clear sensitivity of the PV lines to the clump volume filling factor. The results presented here have implications for the downward revision of mass-loss rates in PN central stars. We conclude that the temporal structures seen in the PV lines of NGC6543 likely have a physical origin that is similar to that operating in massive, luminous stars, and may be related to near-surface perturbations caused by stellar pulsation and/or magnetic fields.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures.     Barriers and facilitators to implementing dementia care mapping in care homes: results from the DCMâ„¢ EPIC trial process evaluation

    Background Psychosocial person-centred interventions are considered best practice for addressing complex behaviours and care needs such as agitation and anxiety, and for improving the quality of life of people with dementia in care homes. Dementia Care Mapping (DCMâ„¢) is an established practice development tool and process aimed to help care home staff deliver more person-centred care. To date, few studies have evaluated the efficacy of DCMâ„¢ and have found mixed results. These results are suggested to be the outcome of intervention implementation, which may be impacted by a range of factors. This study reports the barriers and facilitators to DCMâ„¢ implementation in care homes found during the process evaluation conducted as part of a randomized controlled trial. Methods Eighteen of the 31 DCMâ„¢ intervention care homes were recruited to participate in the embedded process evaluation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 83 participants, comprising care home managers, trained DCMâ„¢ users (mappers), expert external mappers, staff members, relatives, and residents. Results Barriers and facilitators to DCMâ„¢ implementation were found at the mapper level (e.g. motivation and confidence), the DCMâ„¢ intervention level (e.g. understanding of DCMâ„¢) and the care home level (e.g. staffing issues, manager support). Further barriers caused by the burden of trial participation were also identified (e.g. additional paperwork). Conclusions Implementing DCMâ„¢ is complex and a greater consideration of potential barriers and facilitators in planning future studies and in practice could help improve implementation

    X-ray Amorphous and Poorly Crystalline Fe-Containing Phases in Terrestrial Field Environments and Implications for Materials Detected on Mars

    Recent analyses of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data from the CheMin instrument using the FULLPAT program have documented the presence of X-ray amorphous materials at multiple sites within Gale Crater, Mars. These materials are believed to be to be iron-rich based on chemical data, and at least some of them are believed to be weathering products based on volatile contents. However, the characteristics of these proposed Fe-rich weathering products remain poorly understood. To better understand these X-ray amorphous materials on Mars, we are 1) examining weathering products formed on Fe-rich parent material in terrestrial soils across a range of climatic conditions, and 2) performing burial experiments of Fe- and Mg- rich olivine in these soils. We describe each of these approaches below

    Landholder Typologies Used in the Development of Natural Resource Management Programs in Australia - A Review

    This article reviews the literature on the identification of landholder typologies that can be used to assist the design and delivery of natural resource management (NRM) programs. Australian researchers have developed typologies of landholders based on a variety of criteria. The rationale for developing landholder typologies is first discussed before reviewing the various approaches that have been used by Australian researchers and comparing their findings. The methods employed have differed according to the theories used to guide the research and the 'clients' or 'sponsors' of the research. The landholder types they describe, however, have a number of similarities. These similarities suggest that the studies have identified the same fundamental divisions in the rural community, and that it may be possible to integrate landholder typologies for a variety of NRM and non-NRM applications. It is concluded that further research could usefully investigate whether concepts of social class or sub-cultures may be appropriate to define and describe the variations in landholder types

    The Spectral Energy Distribution and Mass-loss Rate of the A-Type Supergiant Deneb

    A stellar wind module has been developed for the PHOENIX stellar atmosphere code for the purpose of computing non-LTE, line-blanketed, expanding atmospheric structures and detailed synthetic spectra of hot luminous stars with winds. We apply the code to observations of Deneb, for which we report the first positive detections of mm and cm emission (obtained using the SCUBA and the VLA), as well a strong upper limit on the 850 micron flux (using the HHT). The slope of the radio spectrum shows that the stellar wind is partially ionized. We report a uniform-disk angular diameter measurement, 2.40 +/- 0.06 mas, from the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI). The measured bolometric flux and corrected NPOI angular diameter yield an effective temperature of 8600 +/- 500 K. Least-squares comparisons of synthetic spectral energy distributions from 1220 A to 3.6 cm with the observations provide estimates for the effective temperature and the mass-loss rate of 8400 +/- 100 K and 8 +/- 3 E-7 M_sun/yr, respectively. This range of mass-loss rates is consistent with that derived from high dispersion UV spectra when non-LTE metal-line blanketing is considered. We are unable achieve a reasonable fit to a typical Halpha P-Cygni profile with any model parameters over a reasonable range. This is troubling because the \ha profile is the observational basis for Wind Momentum-Luminosity Relationship.Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal, 43 pages, 23 figure

    Spatial Dynamics Of Vertical And Horizontal Intergovernmental Collaboration

    Although researchers have made progress in understanding motivations behind local government collaboration, there is little research that explores the spatial dynamics of such interactions. Does the idea of collaboration travel horizontally, passed from neighbor to neighbor, or is vertical leadership from state, county, or regional actors more important in influencing local governments’ decisions to share resources and functions? What factors influence local governments’ choices to collaborate with their neighbors versus a regional entity, county, or state government? In this article, we investigate the importance of vertical and horizontal influences when local governments decide to collaborate around land use planning. Using data from a survey of Michigan local government officials, we take a spatial statistical approach to answering this question. We find widespread evidence of collaboration at multiple scales, and observe patterns of both horizontal and vertical influence.     Cryo-EM model validation recommendations based on outcomes of the 2019 EMDataResource challenge

    This paper describes outcomes of the 2019 Cryo-EM Model Challenge. The goals were to (1) assess the quality of models that can be produced from cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) maps using current modeling software, (2) evaluate reproducibility of modeling results from different software developers and users and (3) compare performance of current metrics used for model evaluation, particularly Fit-to-Map metrics, with focus on near-atomic resolution. Our findings demonstrate the relatively high accuracy and reproducibility of cryo-EM models derived by 13 participating teams from four benchmark maps, including three forming a resolution series (1.8 to 3.1 Å). The results permit specific recommendations to be made about validating near-atomic cryo-EM structures both in the context of individual experiments and structure data archives such as the Protein Data Bank. We recommend the adoption of multiple scoring parameters to provide full and objective annotation and assessment of the model, reflective of the observed cryo-EM map density
