Interstellar HOCN in the Galactic center region
Aims. Our aim is to confirm the interstellar detection of cyanic acid, HOCN,
in the Galactic center clouds. It has previously been tentatively detected only
in Sgr B2(OH).
Methods. We used a complete line survey of the hot cores Sgr B2(N) and (M) in
the 3 mm range, complemented by additional observations carried out with the
IRAM 30 m telescope at selected frequencies in the 2 mm band and towards four
additional positions in the Sgr B2 cloud complex in the 2 and 3 mm bands. The
spectral survey was analysed in the local thermodynamical equilibrium
approximation (LTE) by modeling the emission of all identified molecules
simultaneously. This allowed us to distinguish weak features of HOCN from the
rich line spectrum observed in Sgr B2(N) and (M). Lines of the more stable (by
1.1 eV) isomer isocyanic acid, HNCO, in these sources, as well as those of HOCN
and HNCO towards the other positions, were analysed in the LTE approximation as
well.
Results. Four transitions of HOCN were detected in a quiescent molecular
cloud in the Galactic center at a position offset in (R.A., decl.) by
(20'',100'') from the hot core source Sgr B2(M), confirming its previous
tentative interstellar detection. Up to four transitions were detected toward
five other positions in the Sgr B2 complex, including the hot cores Sgr B2(M),
(S), and (N). A fairly constant abundance ratio of ~ 0.3 - 0.8 % for HOCN
relative to HNCO was derived for the extended gas components, suggesting a
common formation process of these isomers
A probabilistic threshold model: Analyzing semantic categorization data with the Rasch model
According to the Threshold Theory (Hampton, 1995, 2007) semantic categorization decisions come about through the placement of a threshold criterion along a dimension that represents items' similarity to the category representation. The adequacy of this theory is assessed by applying a formalization of the theory, known as the Rasch model (Rasch, 1960; Thissen & Steinberg, 1986), to categorization data for eight natural language categories and subjecting it to a formal test. In validating the model special care is given to its ability to account for inter- and intra-individual differences in categorization and their relationship with item typicality. Extensions of the Rasch model that can be used to uncover the nature of category representations and the sources of categorization differences are discussed
Demonstration of silicon-on-insulator mid-infrared spectrometers operating at 3.8µm
The design and characterization of silicon-on-insulator mid- infrared spectrometers operating at 3.8µm is reported. The devices are fabricated on 200mm SOI wafers in a CMOS pilot line. Both arrayed waveguide grating structures and planar concave grating structures were designed and tested. Low insertion loss (1.5-2.5dB) and good crosstalk characteristics (15-20dB) are demonstrated, together with waveguide propagation losses in the range of 3 to 6dB/cm

An 8x14Gb/s wavelength-division multiplexed Si ring modulator array is presented with uniform channel performance. Tungsten heaters and Ge monitor photodetectors at the ring modulator drop ports are co-integrated to track and control the modulation quality
Neglected Achilles tendon rupture with central insertional plantaris tendon hypertrophy: two cases
A neglected Achilles tendon rupture is often characterized by muscle weakness and an overlengthened repair by scar tissue. Reconstructive surgery is usually performed taking into account the patient’s required level of function. Two surgical cases of neglected Achilles tendon rupture are presented in this article. In both instances it was expected that central fibrosis, possibly after neglected tendon rupture, would be found. However, after longitudinal opening of the tendons, a thickened plantaris tendon was evident at the insertion on the calcaneus in both cases. This hypertrophic tendon occupied most of the diameter of the Achilles tendon. Due to partial or complete rupture of the Achilles tendon, there was notable weakening and tendon transfer-augmentation was performed. A thickened plantaris tendon as a reaction to a neglected rupture of the Achilles tendon is a rare presentation. It can be detected preoperatively by MRI and subsequently preoperative planning can be optimized
Nemo phosphorylates Eyes absent and enhances output from the Eya-Sine oculis transcriptional complex during Drosophila retinal determination
AbstractThe retinal determination gene network comprises a collection of transcription factors that respond to multiple signaling inputs to direct Drosophila eye development. Previous genetic studies have shown that nemo (nmo), a gene encoding a proline-directed serine/threonine kinase, can promote retinal specification through interactions with the retinal determination gene network, although the molecular point of cross-talk was not defined. Here, we report that the Nemo kinase positively and directly regulates Eyes absent (Eya). Genetic assays show that Nmo catalytic activity enhances Eya-mediated ectopic eye formation and potentiates induction of the Eya-Sine oculis (So) transcriptional targets dachshund and lozenge. Biochemical analyses demonstrate that Nmo forms a complex with and phosphorylates Eya at two consensus mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphorylation sites. These same sites appear crucial for Nmo-mediated activation of Eya function in vivo. Thus, we propose that Nmo phosphorylation of Eya potentiates its transactivation function to enhance transcription of Eya-So target genes during eye specification and development
Low Genetic and Morphometric Intraspecific Divergence in Peripheral Copadichromis Populations (Perciformes: Cichlidae) in the Lake Malawi Basin
Peripheral isolated populations may undergo rapid divergence from the main population due to various factors such as a bottleneck or a founder effect followed by genetic drift or local selection pressures. Recent populations of two economically important Copadichromis species in Lake Malombe, a satellite lake of Lake Malawi, were neither genetically nor morphometrically distinct from their source populations in the main lake. Evidence was found for a founder effect which had a different impact on the genetic composition of the two species. In addition, the increased fishing pressure in Lake Malombe may have led to a reduction of the body sizes of both species
