    Characterization of hemodialysis membranes by inverse size exclusion chromatography

    Inverse size exclusion chromatography (i-SEC) was used to characterize three different cellulosic hollow fiber hemodialysis membranes, i.e. low-flux cuprophan and hemophan and high-flux RC-HP400A. With the i-SEC technique the pore size distribution and porosity of a membrane can be determined and adsorption phenomena can be studied. The membranes showed clear differences in pore size and porosity, the high-flux RC-HP400A membrane has a larger pore size as well as a higher porosity. For all the membranes it was found that the elution curves were best described by a homoporous pore volume distribution. It appeared that the bound or non-freezing water in the membranes was at least partly accessible to solutes. The test molecules creatinine and vitamin B 12 both adsorbed to the cellulosic membranes. The adsorption behavior of creatinine was strongly dependent on the NaCl concentration present. The observations could be explained by assuming that cuprophan and RC-HP400A are negatively charged whereas hemophan is positively charged due to the modification with N,N-diethylaminoethyl ether.     Programmable Colloidal Approach to Hierarchical Structures of Methylammonium Lead Bromide Perovskite Nanocrystals with Bright Photoluminescent Properties

    Systematic tailoring of nanocrystal architecture could provide unprecedented control over their electronic, photophysical, and charge transport properties for a variety of applications. However, at present, manipulation of the shape of perovskite nanocrystals is done mostly by trial-and-error-based experimental approaches. Here, we report systematic colloidal synthetic strategies to prepare methylammonium lead bromide quantum platelets and quantum cubes. In order to control the nucleation and growth processes of these nanocrystals, we appropriately manipulate the solvent system, surface ligand chemistry, and reaction temperature causing syntheses into anisotropic shapes. We demonstrate that both the presence of chlorinated solvent and a long chain aliphatic amine in the reaction mixture are crucial for the formation of ultrathin quantum platelets (∼2.5 nm in thickness), which is driven by mesoscale-assisted growth of spherical seed nanocrystals (∼1.6 nm in diameter) through attachment of monomers onto selective crystal facets. A combined surface and structural characterization, along with small-angle X-ray scattering analysis, confirm that the long hydrocarbon of the aliphatic amine is responsible for the well ordered hierarchical stacking of the quantum platelets of 3.5 nm separation. In contrast, the formation of ∼12 nm edge-length quantum cubes is a kinetically driven process in which a high flux of monomers is achieved by supplying thermal energy. The photoluminescence quantum yield of our quantum platelets (∼52%) is nearly 2-fold higher than quantum cubes. Moreover, the quantum platelets display a lower nonradiative rate constant than that found with quantum cubes, which suggests less surface trap states. Together, our research has the potential both to improve the design of synthetic methods for programmable control of shape and assembly and to provide insight into optoelectronic properties of these materials for solid-state device fabrication, e.g., light-emitting diodes, solar cells, and lasing materials

    Lifetime Assessment of Load-Bearing Polymer Glasses: The Influence of Physical Ageing

    The timescale at which ductile failure occurs in loaded glassy polymers can be successfully predicted using the engineering approach presented in a previous publication. In this paper the influence of progressive physical ageing on the plastic deformation behaviour of unplasticised poly(vinyl chloride) (uPVC) is characterised and incorporated in the existing approach. With the modification it is possible to quantitatively predict long-term failures which show a so-called endurance limit. The predictions are compared with failure data of uPVC specimens which were subjected to constant or dynamic loads. In dynamic loading conditions a second type of failure mode was observed: fatigue crack growth. A brief study on the influence of the frequency and stress ratio of the applied stress signal shows that crack growth failure is not expected to occur within experimentally reasonable timescales for constant loading conditions

    Reduced prevalence of placental malaria in primiparae with blood group O

    Background Blood group O protects African children against severe malaria and has reached high prevalence in malarious regions. However, its role in malaria in pregnancy is ambiguous. In 839 delivering Ghanaian women, associations of ABO blood groups with Plasmodium falciparum infection were examined. Methods Plasmodium falciparum infection was diagnosed in placental blood samples by microscopy and PCR assays. Present or past infection was defined as the detection of parasitaemia or haemozoin by microscopy, or a positive PCR result. Blood groups were inferred from genotyping rs8176719 (indicating the O allele) and rs8176746/rs8176747 (distinguishing the B allele from the A allele). Results The majority of women had blood group O (55.4%); present or past P. falciparum infection was seen in 62.3% of all women. Among multiparae, the blood groups had no influence on P. falciparum infection. In contrast, primiparae with blood group O had significantly less present or past infection than women with non-O blood groups (61.5 vs 76.2%, P = 0.007). In multivariate analysis, the odds of present or past placental P. falciparum infection were reduced by 45% in blood group O primiparae (aOR, 0.55 [95% CI, 0.33–0.94]). Conclusions The present study shows a clear protective effect of blood group O against malaria in primiparae. This accords with findings in severe malaria and in vitro results. The data underline the relevance of host genetic protection among primiparae, i.e. the high-risk group for malaria in pregnancy, and contribute to the understanding of high O allele frequencies in Africa

    Long Cycles in a Perturbed Mean Field Model of a Boson Gas

    In this paper we give a precise mathematical formulation of the relation between Bose condensation and long cycles and prove its validity for the perturbed mean field model of a Bose gas. We decompose the total density ρ=ρshort+ρlong\rho=\rho_{{\rm short}}+\rho_{{\rm long}} into the number density of particles belonging to cycles of finite length (ρshort\rho_{{\rm short}}) and to infinitely long cycles (ρlong\rho_{{\rm long}}) in the thermodynamic limit. For this model we prove that when there is Bose condensation, ρlong\rho_{{\rm long}} is different from zero and identical to the condensate density. This is achieved through an application of the theory of large deviations. We discuss the possible equivalence of ρlong0\rho_{{\rm long}}\neq 0 with off-diagonal long range order and winding paths that occur in the path integral representation of the Bose gas.Comment: 10 page

    Decline of placental malaria in southern Ghana after the implementation of intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy with sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) has been adopted as policy by many countries in sub-Saharan Africa. However, data on the post-implementation effectiveness of this measure are scarce.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Clinical and parasitological parameters were assessed among women delivering at a district hospital in rural southern Ghana in the year 2000 when pyrimethamine chemoprophylaxis was recommended (<it>n </it>= 839) and in 2006 (<it>n </it>= 226), approximately one year after the implementation of IPTp-SP. Examinations were performed in an identical manner in 2000 and 2006 including the detection of placental <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>infection by microscopy, histidine-rich protein 2, and PCR.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In 2006, 77% of the women reported to have taken IPTp-SP at least once (26%, twice; 24%, thrice). In 2006 as compared to 2000, placental <it>P. falciparum </it>infection was reduced by 43–57% (<it>P </it>< 0.0001) and maternal anaemia by 33% (<it>P </it>= 0.0009), and median birth weight was 130 g higher (<it>P </it>= 0.02). In 2006, likewise, women who had taken ≥ 1 dose of IPTp-SP revealed less infection and anaemia and their children tended to have higher birth weights as compared to women who had not used IPTp-SP. However, placental <it>P. falciparum </it>infection was still observed in 11% (microscopy) to 26% (PCR) of those women who had taken three doses of IPTp-SP.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In southern Ghana, placental malaria and maternal anaemia have declined substantially and birth weight has increased after the implementation of IPTp-SP. Likely, these effects can further be increased by improving IPTp-SP coverage and adherence. However, the remnant prevalence of infection in women having taken three doses of IPTp-SP suggests that additional antimalarial measures are needed to prevent malaria in pregnancy in this region.</p

    Psychosocial factors affecting variation in patient-reported outcomes after elbow fractures

    Background. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with limitations in function measured by patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) 6-9 months after elbow fractures in adults from a range of demographic, injury, psychological, and social variables measured within a week and 2-4 weeks after injury. Methods. We enrolled 191 adult patients sustaining an isolated elbow fracture and invited them to complete PROMs at their initial visit to the orthopedic outpatient clinic (within a maximum of 1 week after fracture), between 2 and 4 weeks, and between 6 and 9 months after injury; 183 patients completed the final assessment. Bivariate analysis was performed, followed by multivariable regression analysis accounting for multicollinearity. This was evaluated using partial R2, correlation matrices, and variable inflation factor assessment. Results. There was a correlation between multiple variables within a week of injury and 2-4 weeks after injury with PROMs 6-9 months after injury in bivariate analysis. Kinesiophobia measured within a week of injury and self-efficacy measured at 2-4 weeks were the strongest predictors of limitations 6-9 months after injury in multivariable regression. Regression models accounted for substantial variance in all PROMs at both time points. Conclusions. Developing effective coping strategies to overcome fears related to movement and reinjury and finding ways of persevering with activity despite pain within a month of injury may enhance recovery after elbow fractures. Heightened fears around movement and suboptimal coping ability are modifiable using evidence-based behavioral treatments
