    Isolation and characterization of an exopolymer produced by bacillus licheniformis: in vitro antiviral activity against enveloped viruses

    The exopolymer (EPSp) produced by the strain B. licheniformis IDN-EC was isolated and characterized using different techniques (MALDI-TOF, NMR, ATR-FTIR, TGA, DSC, SEM). The results showed that the low molecular weight EPSp contained a long polyglutamic acid and an extracellular teichoic acid polysaccharide. The latter was composed of poly(glycerol phosphate) and was substituted at the 2-position of the glycerol residues with a αGal and αGlcNH2. The αGal O-6 position was also found to be substituted by a phosphate group. The antiviral capability of this EPSp was also tested on both enveloped (herpesviruses HSV, PRV and vesicular stomatitis VSV) and non-enveloped (MVM) viruses. The EPSp was efficient at inhibiting viral entry for the herpesviruses and VSV but was not effective against non-enveloped viruses. The in vivo assay of the EPSp in mice showed no signs of toxicity which could allow for its application in the healthcare sector.Peer reviewe

    Q-switched mode locking noise-like pulse generation from a thulium-doped all-fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation

    Q-switched mode locking (QML) noise-like pulse (NLP) emission from an all-fiber thulium-doped laser based on the nonlinear polarization rotation effect is reported. The QML emission is obtained in a cavity with net anomalous dispersion in a pump power interval in between the CW laser threshold and the threshold of the NLP regime. Highest-energy QML pulses were observed with a repetition rate of 812 kHz with a pump power of 520 mW at the optical wavelength of 1881.09 nm. A maximum overall energy of 460 nJ at an average output power of 6.4 mW was reached, which corresponds to a burst of mode-locked noise-like sub-pulses with 8.7 ns of pulse duration within a QML envelope of 11 μs. These results demonstrate unconventional pulse operation regime of NLPs and provide insights into the dynamics of mode-locked fiber lasers

    Experimental study of MMI structures in a switchable continuous-wave thulium-doped all-fiber laser

    Switchable multi-wavelength laser emission from a thulium-doped all-fiber laser is reported by implementing a tapered and a non-tapered multi-modal interference (MMI) filters. The MMI structure relies on a coreless optical fiber spliced in between two single-mode optical fibers. For the non-tapered case, a minimum insertion loss of 12.60 dB is achieved around the 2-μm region, from which stable generation of commutable dual-wavelength emission at 1986.34 nm and 2017.38 nm is obtained. On the other hand, the tapered MMI structure performs a minimum insertion loss of 8.74 dB at the 2-μm region, allowing a stable triple-wavelength emission at 1995.4 nm, 2013.3 nm, and 2038.3 nm. In addition, commutable dual-wavelength emission was also obtained at 1997.9 nm and 2032.1 nm. The generated laser lines perform bandwidths of around 50 pm, low peak spectral power fluctuations and signal-to-noise ratio of 50 dB

    More and more the social and environmental questions are topic of multidisciplinary analysis, where the geography also plays its paper. By the present work we make a statistical and space analysis to study the behavior of the Socio-environmental Vulnerability in the Historical Center of Havana. This investigation establishes a general index and different sub-indexes that allow to determine several vulnerability levels in this territory, as well as the more affected areas with this classifications. Each one of the sub-indexes corresponds to a dimension of the environment for the study area, so you can determine which of these intervenes in a significant way in the Socio-environmental Vulnerability. This analysis is make in a similar way with each one of the variables selected to conform the indexes, also being able to check its influence in the results exposed by the same ones.Cada vez más las problemáticas sociales y ambientales son tema de análisis multidisciplinario, donde la Geografía también juega su papel. Mediante el presente trabajo se realiza un análisis estadístico y espacial con vista a estudiar el comportamiento de la vulnerabilidad socio-ambiental en el Centro Histórico de La Habana. Esta investigación establece un índice general y diferentes sub-índices que permiten determinar varios niveles de vulnerabilidad en este territorio, así como las zonas más afectadas con dichas clasificaciones. Cada uno de los sub-índices corresponde a una dimensión del medio ambiente para el área de estudio, con lo que se puede determinar cuál de estas interviene de manera significativa en la vulnerabilidad socio-ambiental. Este análisis se realiza de manera similar con cada una de las variables seleccionadas para conformar los índices, pudiéndose también comprobar su influencia en los resultados expuestos por los mismos.De plus en plus, les questions sociales et de l’environnement sont l’objet d’une analyse multidisciplinaire, où la géographie joue également un rôle. Grâce à ce travail est effectué une analyse statistique et spatiale vue a l’étude du comportement de la vulnérabilité socio-environnement dans le centre historique de La Havane. Cette recherche fournit un index et divers sous-indices pour déterminer les différents niveaux de vulnérabilité dans ce territoire et les zones les plus touchées par ces classifications. Chaque sous-indice correspondant à une dimension environnementale à la zone d’étude, qui peut déterminer lequel est impliqué de façon significa- tive le développement socio-environnementale de vulnérabilité.     SARS-CoV-2 ORF8 accessory protein is a virulence factor

    Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) encodes six accessory proteins (3a, 6, 7a, 7b, 8, and 9b) for which limited information is available on their role in pathogenesis. We showed that the deletion of open reading frames (ORFs) 6, 7a, or 7b individually did not significantly impact viral pathogenicity in humanized K18-hACE2 transgenic mice. In contrast, the deletion of ORF8 partially attenuated SARS-CoV-2, resulting in reduced lung pathology and 40% less mortality, indicating that ORF8 is a critical determinant of SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis. Attenuation of SARS-CoV-2-∆8 was not associated with a significant decrease in replication either in the lungs of mice or in organoid-derived human airway cells. An increase in the interferon signaling at early times post-infection (1 dpi) in the lungs of mice and a decrease in the pro-inflammatory and interferon response at late times post-infection, both in the lungs of mice (6 dpi) and in organoid-derived human airway cells [72 hours post-infection (hpi)], were observed. The early, but not prolonged, interferon response along with the lower inflammatory response could explain the partial attenuation of SARS-CoV-∆8. The presence of ORF8 in SARS-CoV-2 was associated with an increase in the number of macrophages in the lungs of mice. In addition, the supernatant of SARS-CoV-2-WT (wild-type)-infected organoid-derived cells enhanced the activation of macrophages as compared to SARS-CoV-2-∆8-infected cells. These results show that ORF8 is a virulence factor involved in inflammation that could be targeted in COVID-19 therapies. IMPORTANCE The relevance of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) ORF8 in the pathogenesis of COVID-19 is unclear. Virus natural isolates with deletions in ORF8 were associated with wild milder disease, suggesting that ORF8 might contribute to SARS-CoV-2 virulence. This manuscript shows that ORF8 is involved in inflammation and in the activation of macrophages in two experimental systems: humanized K18-hACE2 transgenic mice and organoid-derived human airway cells. These results identify ORF8 protein as a potential target for COVID-19 therapies.</p

    Nuevo registro de siren intermedia (caudata: sirenidae) para el estado de Veracruz, México

    The Lesser siren (Siren intermedia) is recorded for the first time in Tuxpan, for the second time in the state of Veracruz, and for the third time in Mexico. This finding increases the points of distribution of this species, previously reported from Matamoros and Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas and Gutierrez Zamora, Veracruz. This species has so far, a disjunct distribution in Mexico. La sirena menor (Siren intermedia) es registrada por primera vez en Tuxpan, por segunda vez en el estado de Veracruz y por tercera vez en México. Este hallazgo incrementa los puntos de  distribución de la especie, previamente informada para Matamoros y Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas y Gutiérrez Zamora, Veracruz. Hasta donde se sabe, esta especie tiene una distribución disyunta en México

    Magnetic Coupling in the Quiet Solar Atmosphere

    Three kinds of magnetic couplings in the quiet solar atmosphere are highlighted and discussed, all fundamentally connected to the Lorentz force. First the coupling of the convecting and overshooting fluid in the surface layers of the Sun with the magnetic field. Here, the plasma motion provides the dominant force, which shapes the magnetic field and drives the surface dynamo. Progress in the understanding of the horizontal magnetic field is summarized and discussed. Second, the coupling between acoustic waves and the magnetic field, in particular the phenomenon of wave conversion and wave refraction. It is described how measurements of wave travel times in the atmosphere can provide information about the topography of the wave conversion zone, i.e., the surface of equal Alfv\'en and sound speed. In quiet regions, this surface separates a highly dynamic magnetic field with fast moving magnetosonic waves and shocks around and above it from the more slowly evolving field of high-beta plasma below it. Third, the magnetic field also couples to the radiation field, which leads to radiative flux channeling and increased anisotropy in the radiation field. It is shown how faculae can be understood in terms of this effect.     Is the treatment with biological or non-biological DMARDS a modifier of periodontal condition in patients with rheumatoid arthritis?

    Background and objective: Experimental models suggest the use of different therapy protocols in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as modulators on periodontal condition. This study evaluated the effects of conventional drug treatment and anti-TNF therapy in patients with RA on microbiological and periodontal condition, establishing the association of markers of periodontal infection with indexes of rheumatic activity. Materials and methods: One hundred seventy nine individuals with RA were evaluated (62 with anti-TNF-. and 115 with only DMARDs). The periodontal evaluation included plaque and gingival indexes, bleeding on probing (BOP), clinical attachment loss (CAL), pocket depth (PD) and subgingival plaque samples for microbiological analysis. Rheumatologic evaluations included a clinical examination, rheumatoid factor (RF), antibodies against cyclic-citrullinated peptides (ACPAs), and activity markers (DAS28-ERS), high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Results: Anti-TNF-alpha therapy influenced periodontal microbiota with a higher frequency of T. denticola (p=0.01). Methotrexate combined with leflunomide exhibited a higher extension of CAL (p=0.005), and anti-TNF-alpha therapy with methotrexate was associated with a lower extension of CAL (p=0.05). The use of corticosteroids exerted a protective effect on the number of teeth (p=0.027). The type of DMARD affected P. gingivalis, T. forsythia and E. nodatum presence. Elevated ACPAs titers were associated with the presence of red complex periodontal pathogens (p=0.025). Bleeding on probing was associated with elevated CPR levels (p=0.05), and ESR was associated with a greater PD (p=0.044) and presence of red complex (p=0.030).
