    Seismology of Procyon A: determination of mode frequencies, amplitudes, lifetimes, and granulation noise

    The F5 IV-V star Procyon A (aCMi) was observed in January 2001 by means of the high resolution spectrograph SARG operating with the TNG 3.5m Italian telescope (Telescopio Nazionale Galileo) at Canary Islands, exploiting the iodine cell technique. The time-series of about 950 spectra carried out during 6 observation nights and a preliminary data analysis were presented in Claudi et al. 2005. These measurements showed a significant excess of power between 0.5 and 1.5 mHz, with ~ 1 m/s peak amplitude. Here we present a more detailed analysis of the time-series, based on both radial velocity and line equivalent width analyses. From the power spectrum we found a typical p-mode frequency comb-like structure, identified with a good margin of certainty 11 frequencies in the interval 0.5-1400 mHz of modes with l=0,1,2 and 7< n < 22, and determined large and small frequency separations, Dn = 55.90 \pm 0.08 muHz and dnu_02=7.1 \pm 1.3 muHz, respectively. The mean amplitude per mode (l=0,1) at peak power results to be 0.45 \pm 0.07 m/s, twice larger than the solar one, and the mode lifetime 2 \pm 0.4 d, that indicates a non-coherent, stochastic source of mode excitation. Line equivalent width measurements do not show a significant excess of power in the examined spectral region but allowed us to infer an upper limit to the granulation noise.Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables.     Dust formation around AGB and SAGB stars: a trend with metallicity?

    We calculate the dust formed around AGB and SAGB stars of metallicity Z=0.008 by following the evolution of models with masses in the range 1M<M<8M throughthe thermal pulses phase, and assuming that dust forms via condensation of molecules within a wind expanding isotropically from the stellar surface. We find that, because of the strong Hot Bottom Burning (HBB) experienced, high mass models produce silicates, whereas lower mass objects are predicted to be surrounded by carbonaceous grains; the transition between the two regimes occurs at a threshold mass of 3.5M. These fndings are consistent with the results presented in a previous investigation, for Z=0.001. However, in the present higher metallicity case, the production of silicates in the more massive stars continues for the whole AGB phase, because the HBB experienced is softer at Z=0.008 than at Z=0.001, thus the oxygen in the envelope, essential for the formation of water molecules, is never consumed completely. The total amount of dust formed for a given mass experiencing HBB increases with metallicity, because of the higher abundance of silicon, and the softer HBB, both factors favouring a higher rate of silicates production. This behaviour is not found in low mass stars,because the carbon enrichment of the stellar surface layers, due to repeated Third Drege Up episodes, is almost independent of the metallicity. Regarding cosmic dust enrichment by intermediate mass stars, we find that the cosmic yield at Z=0.008 is a factor 5 larger than at Z=0.001. In the lower metallicity case carbon dust dominates after about 300 Myr, but at Z=0.008 the dust mass is dominated by silicates at all times,with a prompt enrichment occurring after about 40 Myr, associated with the evolution of stars with masses M =7.5 -8M.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 2 Tables, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Summary This paper estimates the effects of non-pharmaceutical interventions – mainly, the lockdown – on the COVID-19 mortality rate for the case of Italy, the first Western country to impose a national shelter-in-place order. We use a new estimator, the augmented synthetic control method (ASCM), that overcomes some limits of the standard synthetic control method (SCM). The results are twofold. From a methodological point of view, the ASCM outperforms the SCM in that the latter cannot select a valid donor set, assigning all the weights to only one country (Spain) while placing zero weights to all the remaining. From an empirical point of view, we find strong evidence of the effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical interventions in avoiding losses of human lives in Italy: conservative estimates indicate that the policy saved in total more than 21,000 human lives

    The two gap transitions in Ge1−x_{1-x}Snx_x: effect of non-substitutional complex defects

    The existence of non-substitutional β\beta-Sn defects in Ge1−x_{1-x}Snx_{x} was confirmed by emission channeling experiments [Decoster et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 155204 (2010)], which established that although most Sn enters substitutionally (α\alpha-Sn) in the Ge lattice, a second significant fraction corresponds to the Sn-vacancy defect complex in the split-vacancy configuration ( β\beta-Sn ), in agreement with our previous theoretical study [Ventura et al., Phys. Rev. B 79, 155202 (2009)]. Here, we present our electronic structure calculation for Ge1−x_{1-x}Snx_{x}, including substitutional α\alpha-Sn as well as non-substitutional β\beta-Sn defects. To include the presence of non-substitutional complex defects in the electronic structure calculation for this multi-orbital alloy problem, we extended the approach for the purely substitutional alloy by Jenkins and Dow [Jenkins and Dow, Phys. Rev. B 36, 7994 (1987)]. We employed an effective substitutional two-site cluster equivalent to the real non-substitutional β\beta-Sn defect, which was determined by a Green's functions calculation. We then calculated the electronic structure of the effective alloy purely in terms of substitutional defects, embedding the effective substitutional clusters in the lattice. Our results describe the two transitions of the fundamental gap of Ge1−x_{1-x}Snx_{x} as a function of the total Sn-concentration: namely from an indirect to a direct gap, first, and the metallization transition at higher xx. They also highlight the role of β\beta-Sn in the reduction of the concentration range which corresponds to the direct-gap phase of this alloy, of interest for optoelectronics applications.Comment: 11 pages, 9 Figure

    A robust conditional approximation of marginal tail probabilities.

    The aim of this contribution is to derive a robust approximate conditional procedure used to eliminate nuisance parameters in regression and scale models. Unlike the approximations to exact conditional solutions based on the likelihood function and on the maximum likelihood estimator, the robust conditional approximation of marginal tail probabilities does not suffer from lack of robustness to model misspecification. To assess the performance of the proposed robust conditional procedure the results of sensitivity analyses are discussed

    Precision limits of the twin-beam multiband URSULA

    URSULA is a multiband astronomical photoelectric photometer which minimizes errors introduced by the presence of the atmosphere. It operates with two identical channels, one for the star to be measured and the other for a reference star. After a technical description of the present version of the apparatus, some measurements of stellar sources of different brightness, and in different atmospheric conditions are presented. These measurements, based on observations made with the 91 cm Cassegrain telescope of the Catania Astrophysical Observatory, are used to check the photometer accuracy and compare its performance with that of standard photometers

    Topological mass mechanism and exact fields mapping

    We present a class of mappings between models with topological mass mechanism and purely topological models in arbitrary dimensions. These mappings are established by directly mapping the fields of one model in terms of the fields of the other model in closed expressions. These expressions provide the mappings of their actions as well as the mappings of their propagators. For a general class of models in which the topological model becomes the BF model the mappings present arbitrary functions which otherwise are absent for Chern-Simons like actions. This work generalizes the results of [1] for arbitrary dimensions.Comment: 11 page

    On the alumina dust production in the winds of O-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch stars

    The O-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars experience strong mass loss with efficient dust condensation and they are major sources of dust in the interstellar medium. Alumina dust (Al2_2O3_3) is an important dust component in O-rich circumstellar shells and it is expected to be fairly abundant in the winds of the more massive and O-rich AGB stars. By coupling AGB stellar nucleosynthesis and dust formation, we present a self-consistent exploration on the Al2_2O3_3 production in the winds of AGB stars with progenitor masses between ∼\sim3 and 7 M⊙_{\odot} and metallicities in the range 0.0003 ≤\le Z ≤\le 0.018. We find that Al2_2O3_3 particles form at radial distances from the centre between ∼2\sim2 and 4 R∗_* (depending on metallicity), which is in agreement with recent interferometric observations of Galactic O-rich AGB stars. The mass of Al2_2O3_3 dust is found to scale almost linearly with metallicity, with solar metallicity AGBs producing the highest amount (about 10−3^{-3} M⊙_{\odot}) of alumina dust. The Al2_2O3_3 grain size decreases with decreasing metallicity (and initial stellar mass) and the maximum size of the Al2_2O3_3 grains is ∼\sim0.075 μm\mu m for the solar metallicity models. Interestingly, the strong depletion of gaseous Al observed in the low-metallicity HBB AGB star HV 2576 seems to be consistent with the formation of Al2_2O3_3 dust as predicted by our models. We suggest that the content of Al may be used as a mass (and evolutionary stage) indicator in AGB stars experiencing HBB.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
