    Mitochondrial and chloroplast stress responses are modulated in distinct touch and chemical inhibition phases

    Previous studies have identified a range of transcription factors that modulate retrograde regulation of mitochondrial and chloroplast functions in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). However, the relative importance of these regulators and whether they act downstream of separate or overlapping signaling cascades is still unclear. Here, we demonstrate that multiple stress-related signaling pathways, with distinct kinetic signatures, converge on overlapping gene sets involved in energy organelle function. The transcription factor ANAC017 is almost solely responsible for transcript induction of marker genes around 3 to 6 h after chemical inhibition of organelle function and is a key regulator of mitochondrial and specific types of chloroplast retrograde signaling. However, an independent and highly transient gene expression phase, initiated within 10 to 30 min after treatment, also targets energy organelle functions, and is related to touch and wounding responses. Metabolite analysis demonstrates that this early response is concurrent with rapid changes in tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates and large changes in transcript abundance of genes encoding mitochondrial dicarboxylate carrier proteins. It was further demonstrated that transcription factors AtWRKY15 and AtWRKY40 have repressive regulatory roles in this touch-responsive gene expression. Together, our results show that several regulatory systems can independently affect energy organelle function in response to stress, providing different means to exert operational control

    Cold air outbreaks and their signature in the ozonometric data at the mountain station near Kislovodsk, Russia

    International audienceTwo cases of cold air outbreak in November 2001 are analyzed on the basis of ozone concentration measurements and weather data at the mountain station (43°44' N, 42°43 E, 2070 m a.s.l.) near Kislovodsk, North Caucasus, Russia. Two cold fronts, with fast clearing up in the rear of the cloud zone, passed the station in the morning of 12 and 16 November. In both cases, the ozone concentration drops down to 7?8 ppb within the frontal cloud zones, under 100% relative humidity, RH, and then sharply increases to 43?45 ppb in dry (RH about 50%), cold air during several hours. After a warm front passage (12 November) or RH growth in the cold post-frontal airmass (16 November), the ozone concentration decreases again to its average values near 30 ppb. Neither diurnal cycle nor photochemical generation could produce in the ozonometric data this specific "drop-and-peak'' signature which is considered to be caused by cold outbreak with post-frontal flow of "dry air stream'' type. Synoptic situation and tropopause topography are analyzed using the objective analysis data and METEOSAT images in the water vapor radiation band. It is concluded that the ozone growth in the rear of the cold fronts is associated with sinking of substratospheric or stratospherically influenced air from the areas of tropopause folding. Motion of cold surges with their frontal zones, jet streams, and tropopause folds is analyzed, including development of wave disturbances at the streamers and formation of substratospheric air "tongues'' underflowing the high tropopause and representing "aged'' intrusions

    Third-order many-body perturbation theory calculations for the beryllium and magnesium isoelectronic sequences

    Relativistic third-order MBPT is applied to obtain energies of ions with two valence electrons in the no virtual-pair approximation (NVPA). A total of 302 third-order Goldstone diagrams are organized into 12 one-body and 23 two-body terms. Only third-order two-body terms and diagrams are presented here, owing to the fact that the one-body terms are identical to the previously studied third-order terms in monovalent ions. Dominant classes of diagrams are identified. The model potential is a Dirac-Hartree-Fock VN2V^{N-2} potential, and B-spline basis functions in a cavity of finite radius are employed in the numerical calculations. The Breit interaction is taken into account through second order of perturbation theory and the lowest-order Lamb shift is also evaluated. Sample calculations are performed for berylliumlike ions with Z = 4--7, and for the magnesiumlike ion P IV. The third-order energies are in excellent agreement with measurement with an accuracy at 0.2% level for the cases considered. Comparisons are made with previous second-order MBPT results and with other calculations. The third-order energy correction is shown to be significant, improving second-order correlation energies by an order of magnitude

    Yang-Mills instantons and dyons on homogeneous G_2-manifolds

    We consider Lie G-valued Yang-Mills fields on the space R x G/H, where G/H is a compact nearly K"ahler six-dimensional homogeneous space, and the manifold R x G/H carries a G_2-structure. After imposing a general G-invariance condition, Yang-Mills theory with torsion on R x G/H is reduced to Newtonian mechanics of a particle moving in R^6, R^4 or R^2 under the influence of an inverted double-well-type potential for the cases G/H = SU(3)/U(1)xU(1), Sp(2)/Sp(1)xU(1) or G_2/SU(3), respectively. We analyze all critical points and present analytical and numerical kink- and bounce-type solutions, which yield G-invariant instanton configurations on those cosets.     Metallicity Effect on LMXB Formation in Globular Clusters

    We present comprehensive observational results of the metallicity effect on the fraction of globular clusters (GC) that contain low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXB), by utilizing all available data obtained with Chandra for LMXBs and HST ACS for GCs. Our primary sample consists of old elliptical galaxies selected from the ACS Virgo and Fornax surveys. To improve statistics at both the lowest and highest X-ray luminosity, we also use previously reported results from other galaxies. It is well known that the LMXB fraction is considerably higher in red, metal-rich, than in blue, metal-poor GCs. In this paper, we test whether this metallicity effect is X-ray luminosity-dependent, and find that the effect holds uniformly in a wide luminosity range. This result is statistically significant (at >= 3 sigma) in LMXBs with luminosities in the range LX = 2 x 10^37 - 5 x 10^38 erg s-1, where the ratio of LMXB fractions in metal-rich to metal-poor GCs is R = 3.4 +- 0.5. A similar ratio is also found at lower (down to 10^36 erg s-1) and higher luminosities (up to the ULX regime), but with less significance (~2 sigma confidence). Because different types of LMXBs dominate in different luminosities, our finding requires a new explanation for the metallicity effect in dynamically formed LMXBs.     Spatial transformation as an institutional factor of the public management of macroeconomic systems

    Purpose: The article analyzes the issue of substantiating the impact of the spatial organization of the territory of the Russian Federation on the public management at the level of macroeconomic systems. Design/Methodology/Approach: The federal districts were chosen as the object of the study as macro-regional socio-economic systems, the Southern Federal District and its constituent regions (subjects of the Russian Federation). The article investigates the main transformational processes taking place in the RF spatial development, concerning the development of the regional systems of the public management and the necessity of their consistency at the supra-regional (macro-regional) level. Findings: The authors propose a set of measures to form supra-regional system to coordinate the regional development priorities considering the peculiarities of the spatial transformation of Russia's territory and the position of the Southern macro-region in the spatial system of the country. This system formation allows involving as many interested parties as possible. Practical Implications: The results may be implemented into macro-region public administration to maximize the advantages of the geo-economic and strategic position, natural and climatic conditions of Russian regions' development.     Noncommutative Moduli for Multi-Instantons

    There exists a recursive algorithm for constructing BPST-type multi-instantons on commutative R^4. When deformed noncommutatively, however, it becomes difficult to write down non-singular instanton configurations with topological charge greater than one in explicit form. We circumvent this difficulty by allowing for the translational instanton moduli to become noncommutative as well.
