    Quantitative Determination of the Adiabatic Condition Using Force-Detected Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

    The adiabatic condition governing cyclic adiabatic inversion of proton spins in a micron-sized ammonium chloride crystal was studied using room temperature nuclear magnetic resonance force microscopy. A systematic degradation of signal-to-noise was observed as the adiabatic condition became violated. A theory of adiabatic following applicable to cyclic adiabatic inversion is reviewed and implemented to quantitatively determine an adiabaticity threshold (γH1)2/(ωoscΩ)=6.0(\gamma H_1)^2/(\omega_{osc}\Omega) = 6.0 from our experimental results.Comment: 5 pages, 3 fig

    Automatic Extraction of News Values from Headline Text

    Headlines play a crucial role in attracting audiences’ attention to online artefacts (e.g. news articles, videos, blogs). The ability to carry out an automatic, largescale analysis of headlines is critical to facilitate the selection and prioritisation of a large volume of digital content. In journalism studies news content has been extensively studied using manually annotated news values – factors used implicitly and explicitly when making decisions on the selection and prioritisation of news items. This paper presents the first attempt at a fully automatic extraction of news values from headline text. The news values extraction methods are applied on a large headlines corpus collected from The Guardian, and evaluated by comparing it with a manually annotated gold standard. A crowdsourcing survey indicates that news values affect people’s decisions to click on a headline, supporting the need for an automatic news values detection

    Recurrent cerebellar architecture solves the motor-error problem

    Current views of cerebellar function have been heavily influenced by the models of Marr and Albus, who suggested that the climbing fibre input to the cerebellum acts as a teaching signal for motor learning. It is commonly assumed that this teaching signal must be motor error (the difference between actual and correct motor command), but this approach requires complex neural structures to estimate unobservable motor error from its observed sensory consequences. We have proposed elsewhere a recurrent decorrelation control architecture in which Marr-Albus models learn without requiring motor error. Here, we prove convergence for this architecture and demonstrate important advantages for the modular control of systems with multiple degrees of freedom. These results are illustrated by modelling adaptive plant compensation for the three-dimensional vestibular ocular reflex. This provides a functional role for recurrent cerebellar connectivity, which may be a generic anatomical feature of projections between regions of cerebral and cerebellar cortex

    Fast solvers and efficient numerical cfd techniques for dynamic porous media problems

    We present a fully implicit, monolithic finite element solution scheme to efficiently solve the governing set of differential algebraic equations of incompressible poroelastodynamics. Thereby, we proceed from a two-dimensional, biphasic, saturated porous medium model with intrinsically coupled and incompressible solid and fluid constituents. Our approach, motivated by well-accepted CFD techniques and originally developed for the efficient simulation of incompressible flow problems, is characterized by the following aspects: (1) a special treatment of the algebraically coupled volume balance equation leading to a reduced form of the boundary conditions; (2) usage of a higher-order accurate mixed LBB-stable finite element pair with piecewise discontinuous pressure for the spatial discretization; (3) application of the fully implicit 2nd-order Crank-Nicolson scheme for the time discretization; (4) use of a special fast multigrid solver for the resulting discrete linear equation system. For the purpose of validation and to expose the merits and benefits of our new solution strategy in comparison to other established approaches, canonical one- and two-dimensional wave propagation problems are solved. Finally, a large-scale, dynamic soil-structure interaction problem serves to reveal the efficiency of the special multigrid solver in combination with the chosen finite element discretization

The dataset consists of two headlines corpora -- The Guardian and New York Times -- collected in 2014 using news outlet APIs. Each corpus includes a unique headline identifier (to enable recreating the corpus by querying the relevant API), the extracted features (news values, style, metadata), and the corresponding popularity on Twitter and Facebook

    Building a network of hydrogen refuelling stations is essential to develop the hydrogen economy within transport. Additional, hydrogen is regarded a likely key component to store and convert back excess electrical power to secure future energy supply and to improve the quality of biomass-based fuels. Therefore, future hydrogen supply and distribution chains will have to address several objectives. Such a complexity is a challenge for risk assessment and risk management of these chains because of the increasing interactions. Improved methods are needed to assess the supply chain as a whole. The method of "Functional modelling" is discussed in this paper. It will be shown how it could be a basis for other decision support methods for comprehensive risk and sustainability assessments

    Possible glueball production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

    Within a thermal model we estimate possible multiplicities of scalar glueballs in central Au+Au collisions at AGS, SPS, RHIC and LHC energies. For the glueball mass in the region 1.5-1.7 GeV, the model predicts on average (per event) 0.5-1.5 glueballs at RHIC and 1.5-4 glueballs at LHC energies.     Genetic isolation and morphological divergence mediated by high-energy rapids in two cichlid genera from the lower Congo rapids

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It is hypothesized that one of the mechanisms promoting diversification in cichlid fishes in the African Great Lakes has been the well-documented pattern of philopatry along shoreline habitats leading to high levels of genetic isolation among populations. However lake habitats are not the only centers of cichlid biodiversity - certain African rivers also contain large numbers of narrowly endemic species. Patterns of isolation and divergence in these systems have tended to be overlooked and are not well understood.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We examined genetic and morphological divergence among populations of two narrowly endemic cichlid species, <it>Teleogramma depressum </it>and <it>Lamprologus tigripictilis</it>, from a 100 km stretch of the lower Congo River using both nDNA microsatellites and mtDNA markers along with coordinate-based morphological techniques. In <it>L. tigripictilis</it>, the strongest genetic break was concordant with measurable phenotypic divergence but no morphological disjunction was detected for <it>T. depressum </it>despite significant differentiation at mtDNA and nDNA microsatellite markers.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The genetic markers revealed patterns of philopatry and estimates of genetic isolation that are among the highest reported for any African cichlid species over a comparable geographic scale. We hypothesize that the high levels of philopatry observed are generated and maintained by the extreme hydrology of the lower Congo River.</p
