    We discuss a new method for setting limits on small signals in the presence of background noise. The method is based on a combination of a two dimensional confidence region and the large sample approximation to the likelihood ratio test statistic. It automatically quotes upper limits for small signals and two-sided confidence intervals for larger samples.     The British Geological Survey provides nationwide digital geological maps at a range of scales. These digital products are known by the name ‘BGS Geology’ (formerly DiGMapGB). This guide is written for users of the 1:50 000 scale digital geological map data (BGS Geology: 50k) version 8, released in 2016. It describes the basic layout and content of the dataset and provides background information as to how this version of the dataset has changed compared with previous versions. A basic appreciation of Geographical Information System (GIS) terminology is needed to understand some of the information outlined here. Users should also familiarise themselves with some of the basic principles behind geological description of our landscape; further information about how BGS has made the geological map of Great Britain can be found on the BGS website at: http://www.bgs.ac.uk/products/digitalmaps/digmapgb.htm

    Limits and Confidence Intervals in the Presence of Nuisance Parameters

    We study the frequentist properties of confidence intervals computed by the method known to statisticians as the Profile Likelihood. It is seen that the coverage of these intervals is surprisingly good over a wide range of possible parameter values for important classes of problems, in particular whenever there are additional nuisance parameters with statistical or systematic errors.     Adolescents’ daily face-to-face and computer-mediated communication: Associations with autonomy and closeness to parents and friends

    The amount of time adolescents spend communicating via digital technologies such as smartphones has led to concerns that computer-mediated communication (CMC) is displacing face-to-face (FtF) interactions and disrupting social development. Although many studies have examined CMC in adolescents' relationships with friends, few studies have examined the role of CMC in adolescents' renegotiation of closeness and autonomy with parents. To examine this issue, we administered an online daily diary with 169 U.S. adolescents to estimate the time they spend in CMC and FtF interactions and the number of texts they exchange with friends and parents. On the last day of the survey, we asked adolescents about their emotional closeness to friends and parents and their balance of closeness and volition with parents. Overall, we found more evidence for social stimulation than displacement effects of CMC. Texts and CMC time with friends predicted friend closeness after accounting for FtF time with friends; texts with parents predicted parent closeness after accounting for FtF time with parents. We also found support for our hypothesis that CMC would be associated with greater adolescent volition. CMC time with parents predicted greater volitional dependence (volition plus closeness) whereas texts with friends predicted greater independent decision-making (volition plus distance). We discuss how communication technologies are integrated into U.S. adolescents' relationships with friends and parents and how CMC can facilitate, rather than stifle, adolescents' adjustment of autonomy-relatedness with parents and their construction of emotional closeness with friends

    Neutron stars and strange stars in the chiral SU(3) quark mean field model

    We investigate the equations of state for pure neutron matter and strange hadronic matter in ÎČ\beta-equilibrium, including Λ\Lambda, ÎŁ\Sigma and Ξ\Xi hyperons. The masses and radii of pure neutron stars and strange hadronic stars are obtained. For a pure neutron star, the maximum mass is about 1.8Msun1.8 M_{\mathrm{sun}}, while for a strange hadronic star, the maximum mass is around 1.45Msun1.45 M_{\mathrm{sun}}. The typical radii of pure neutron stars and strange hadronic stars are about 11.0-12.3 km and 10.7-11.7 km, respectively.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

    We suggest a scenario where the three light quark flavors are sequentially deconfined under increasing pressure in cold asymmetric nuclear matter, e.g., as in neutron stars. The basis for our analysis is a chiral quark matter model of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type with diquark pairing in the spin-1 single flavor (CSL) and spin-0 two/three flavor (2SC/CFL) channels, and a Dirac-Brueckner Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach in the nuclear matter sector. We find that nucleon dissociation sets in at about the saturation density, n_0, when the down-quark Fermi sea is populated (d-quark dripline) due to the flavor asymmetry imposed by beta-equilibrium and charge neutrality. At about 3n_0 u-quarks appear forming a two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) phase, while the s-quark Fermi sea is populated only at still higher baryon density. The hybrid star sequence has a maximum mass of 2.1 M_sun.
