Sonic levitation apparatus
A sonic levitation apparatus is disclosed which includes a sonic transducer which generates acoustical energy responsive to the level of an electrical amplifier. A duct communicates with an acoustical chamber to deliver an oscillatory motion of air to a plenum section which contains a collimated hole structure having a plurality of parallel orifices. The collimated hole structure converts the motion of the air to a pulsed. Unidirectional stream providing enough force to levitate a material specimen. Particular application to the production of microballoons in low gravity environment is discussed
Neural Correlates of Attentional and Mnemonic Processing in Event-Based Prospective Memory
Prospective memory (PM), or memory for realizing delayed intentions, was examined with an event-based paradigm while simultaneously measuring neural activity with high-density EEG recordings. Specifically, the neural substrates of monitoring for an event-based cue were examined, as well as those perhaps associated with the cognitive processes supporting detection of cues and fulfillment of intentions. Participants engaged in a baseline lexical decision task (LDT), followed by a LDT with an embedded PM component. Event-based cues were constituted by color and lexicality (red words). Behavioral data provided evidence that monitoring, or preparatory attentional processes, were used to detect cues. Analysis of the event-related potentials (ERP) revealed visual attentional modulations at 140 and 220 ms post-stimulus associated with preparatory attentional processes. In addition, ERP components at 220, 350, and 400 ms post-stimulus were enhanced for intention-related items. Our results suggest preparatory attention may operate by selectively modulating processing of features related to a previously formed event-based intention, as well as provide further evidence for the proposal that dissociable component processes support the fulfillment of delayed intentions
Promoviendo la justicia social a través del aprendizaje-servicio en la formación de maestros de Educación Infantil
As early childhood teacher education programs have begun to place greater emphasis on standards and
accountability, there has been less focus on working with the community, and especially working on
important social justice issues (Kroll, 2013). In this paper we argue that integrating service-learning
and teacher education is a strategy for increasing awareness of social justice issues for young children,
age three to grade three. Through the use of questionnaires and interviews to collect our data, we found
that implementing a cascading service-learning model in teacher education programs has a positive
transformative effect on Pre-Service Teachers. Additionally, we examined the effects of social justice
service-learning projects on young children. The results from the data indicated that implementing a
social justice service-learning project with these participants had a great impact or transformation on
them.Como en los programas de formación del profesorado para la primera infancia han empezado a poner
mayor énfasis en los estándares y la rendición de cuentas, se está haciendo menos hincapié en el
trabajo con la comunidad, y especialmente en trabajos centrados en temas relevantes de justicia social
(Kroll, 2013). En este artículo se argumenta que la integración del aprendizaje-servicio y la formación
del profesorado es una estrategia para aumentar la conciencia sobre temas de justicia social con los
niños pequeños, desde los tres años hasta tercer grado. A través del uso de cuestionarios y entrevistas
para la recolección de datos, se encontró que la implementación de un modelo de aprendizaje-servicio
en cascada en los programas de formación del profesorado tiene un efecto transformador positivo en
profesores en formación. Además, se examinaron los efectos de los proyectos de aprendizaje-servicio
de justicia social con niños pequeños. Los resultados de los datos indican que la implementación de
un proyecto de aprendizaje-servicio de justicia social con estos participantes tiene un gran impacto o
transformación en ellos.Os programas de formação do professorado para a primeira infância começaram a pôr maior ênfase nos
padrões e a prestação de contas, dando-se menos ênfase ao trabalho com a comunidade, e especialmente
em trabalhos centrados em temas relevantes de justiça social (Kroll, 2013). Neste artigo se argumenta
que a integração do aprendizagem-serviço e a formação do professorado é uma estratégia para
aumentar a consciência sobre temas de justiça social com as crianças pequenas, desde os três anos até

Geology of Niobrara State Park, Knox County, Nebraska, and Adjacent Areas, with a Brief History of the Park, Gavins Point Dam, and Lewis and Clark Lake
Location Niobrara State Park is located in northwestern Knox County, Nebraska, just west of the town of Niobrara and on the west side of the Niobrara River. The present park was opened in the summer of 1987. Mostly north of Nebraska Highway 12, the site is hilly with bluffs overlooking the Missouri and Niobrara rivers. Excellent facilities include paved roads, cabins, an outdoor swimming pooi, hiking trails, picnic and camping sites, horseback riding trails, playgrounds, restrooms, a group lodge, and an interpretive shelter. Many vantage points in the park have beautiful views of the lower Niobrara Valley and the middle Missouri Valley. Lovers of native plants and wildlife can see many different species in and near the park. Park grounds are open all year. The park office, about 1.5 miles northwest of the park entrance, is open daily from mid-April to mid-November, and weekdays at other times of the year (figs. 1 and 2).
Purposes This educational circular describes the prehistory and history of Niobrara State Park, Gavins Point Dam and its reservoir-Lewis and Clark Lake-and several aspects of the geology of the park and nearby or adjoining areas. Sections include information on minerals, fossils, stratigraphy, and geologic history, but the principal focuses of this circular are on the work of and changes in the Niobrara River and on geologic hazards in the area.
Cautions Caution is advised when visiting the park or any other area. A void walking on landslide areas. Stay away from steep hill slopes. Be careful when working on dark shale exposures on hot days because temperatures on these shales reach well above 100 degrees F. Poison ivy, stinging insects, and other such hazards occur. Be careful! We remind readers that collecting of any kind is prohibited in the park and that permission must be obtained from property owners before going on or collecting from private property
Ab-initio calculation of the electronic and optical excitations in polythiophene: effects of intra- and interchain screening
We present an calculation of the electronic and optical excitations of an
isolated polythiophene chain as well as of bulk polythiophene. We use the GW
approximation for the electronic self-energy and include excitonic effects by
solving the electron-hole Bethe-Salpeter equation. The inclusion of interchain
screening in the case of bulk polythiophene drastically reduces both the
quasi-particle band gap and the exciton binding energies, but the optical gap
is hardly affected. This finding is relevant for conjugated polymers in

Ab-initio prediction of the electronic and optical excitations in polythiophene: isolated chains versus bulk polymer
We calculate the electronic and optical excitations of polythiophene using
the GW approximation for the electronic self-energy, and include excitonic
effects by solving the electron-hole Bethe-Salpeter equation. Two different
situations are studied: excitations on isolated chains and excitations on
chains in crystalline polythiophene. The dielectric tensor for the crystalline
situation is obtained by modeling the polymer chains as polarizable line
objects, with a long-wavelength polarizability tensor obtained from the
ab-initio polarizability function of the isolated chain. With this model
dielectric tensor we construct a screened interaction for the crystalline case,
including both intra- and interchain screening. In the crystalline situation
both the quasi-particle band gap and the exciton binding energies are
drastically reduced in comparison with the isolated chain. However, the optical
gap is hardly affected. We expect this result to be relevant for conjugated

Auditory EEG Biomarkers in Fragile X Syndrome: Clinical Relevance
Sensory hypersensitivities are common and distressing features of Fragile X Syndrome (FXS). While there are many drug interventions that reduce behavioral deficits in Fmr1 mice and efforts to translate these preclinical breakthroughs into clinical trials for FXS, evidence-based clinical interventions are almost non-existent potentially due to lack of valid neural biomarkers. Local circuit function in sensory networks is dependent on the dynamic balance of activity in inhibitory/excitatory synapses. Studies are needed to examine the association of electrophysiological alterations in neural systems with sensory and other clinical features of FXS to establish their clinical relevance. Adolescents and adults with FXS (n = 38, Mean age = 25.5, std = 10.1; 13 females) and age matched typically developing controls (n = 40, Mean age = 27.7, std = 12.1; 17 females) completed auditory chirp and auditory habituation tasks while undergoing dense array electroencephalography (EEG). Amplitude, latency, and percent change (habituation) in N1 and P2 event-related potential (ERP) components were characterized for the habituation task; time-frequency calculations using Morlet wavelets characterized phase-locking and single trial power for the habituation and chirp tasks. FXS patients showed increased amplitude but some evidence for reduced habituation of the N1 ERP, and reduced phase-locking in the low and high gamma frequency range and increased low gamma power to the chirp stimulus. FXS showed increased theta power in both tasks. While the habituation finding was weaker than previously found, the remaining findings replicate our previous work in a new sample of patients with FXS. Females showed less deficit in the chirp task but not the habituation task. Abnormal increases in gamma power were related to more severe behavioral and psychiatric features as well as reductions in neurocognitive abilities. Replicating electrophysiological deficits in a new group of patients using different EEG equipment at a new data collection site with differing levels of environmental noise that were robust to data processing techniques utilizing multiple researchers, indicates a potential for scalability to multi-site clinical trials. Given the robust replicability, relevance to clinical measures, and preclinical evidence for sensitivity of these EEG measures to pharmacological intervention, the observed abnormalities may provide novel translational markers of target engagement and potentially outcome measures in large-scale studies evaluating new treatments targeting neural hyperexcitability in FXS.This study was supported by NIMH/NICHD grant U54 HD082008-01 (Huber and JS). Interaction between COMT rs5993883 and second generation antipsychotics is linked to decreases in verbal cognition and cognitive control in bipolar disorder
Abstract
Background
Second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) are increasingly utilized in Bipolar Disorder (BD) but are potentially associated with cognitive side effects. Also linked to cognitive deficits associated with SGA-treatment are catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene variants. In this study, we examine the relationship between cognition in SGA use and COMT rs5993883 in cohort sample of subjects with BD.
Methods
Interactions between SGA-treatment and COMT rs5993883 genotype on cognition was tested using a battery of neuropsychological tests performed in cross-sectional study of 246 bipolar subjects.
Results
The mean age of our sample was 40.15 years and was comprised of 70 % female subjects. Significant demographic differences included gender, hospitalizations, benzodiazepine/antidepressant use and BD-type diagnosis. Linear regressions showed that the COMT rs5993883 GG genotype predicted lower verbal learning (p = 0.0006) and memory (p = 0.0026) scores, and lower scores on a cognitive control task (p = 0.004) in SGA-treated subjects. Interestingly, COMT GT- or TT-variants showed no intergroup cognitive differences. Further analysis revealed an interaction between SGA-COMT GG-genotype for verbal learning (p = 0.028), verbal memory (p = 0.026) and cognitive control (p = 0.0005).
Conclusions
This investigation contributes to previous work demonstrating links between cognition, SGA-treatment and COMT rs5993883 in BD subjects. Our analysis shows significant associations between cognitive domains such as verbal-cognition and cognitive control in SGA-treated subjects carrying the COMT rs5993883 GG-genotype.
