    Get PDF

Inclusion VR: a New Virtual Reality Device for Inclusive Experiences

There are many public and private spaces and environments where design characteristics are a severe impediment to accessibility for people with reduced mobility. Traditional measurements of accessibility are flawed, as they fail to account for people’s mobility and physical differences. Structural barriers and individual mobility limitations that affect travel time, effort, and even successful completion are ignored. An accessibility measurement framework including measures of absolute, gross, closest assignment, single and multiple activity, probabilistic choice, and relative access has been proposed to address this problem [1]. Unfortunately, in most cases, people with reduced mobility are forced to renounce access to public and private spaces. Although the best solution would obviously be to make these places universally accessible, there are some sites where it is very difficult to make architectural changes without altering their identity. Cultural heritage sites are a good example of places where architectural changes are not feasible. This is especially problematic in the case of monuments and archaeological sites, as many of them are not prepared to receive these types of visitors. The European Union considers cultural heritage as a means of achieving social integration [2]. Among its current challenges, the EU is promoting multidisciplinary initiatives that combine expertise in cultural heritage with the resources provided by technology. From another perspective, the use of virtual reality to evaluate and train inexperienced wheelchair users has been proposed [3]. People with motor disabilities can benefit from these types of actions. In situations where the value of a site must be preserved, and the needs of people with limited mobility must be taken into account, building a digital twin of the space can be a way to experience/visit the site through virtual reality

Magnetic properties and energy absorption of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles for magnetic hyperthermia

We have studied the magnetic and power absorption properties of three samples of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with sizes from 5 to 12 nm prepared by thermal decomposition of Fe (acac)3 and Co(acac)2 at high temperatures. The blocking temperatures TB estimated from magnetization M(T) curves spanned the range 180 < TB < 320 K, reflecting the large magnetocrystalline anisotropy of these nanoparticles. Accordingly, high coercive fields HC \approx 1.4 - 1.7 T were observed at low temperatures. Specific Power Absorption (SPA) experiments carried out in ac magnetic fields indicated that, besides particle volume, the effective magnetic anisotropy is a key parameter determining the absorption efficiency. SPA values as high as 98 W/g were obtained for nanoparticles with average size of \approx12 nm.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

to be from 2.5 to 5.5 cases per 1,000 catheter-day. the clinical impact is relevant and increases the cost of the HD Unit. Methods: The present study is the irst of 2 phases. It was conducted from January to December of 2012, and included all patients and nurses who were in the HD Unit. The prevalence of Gramnegative bacilli (GNB) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MrSA) colonizing the nasal passages and the skin is described. Also, phenotypic association was sought by genus, species and sensitivities between colonizing bacterial strains and blood cultures with GNB and MRSA. Results: the study included 70 patients and 10 nurses. the prevalence of nasal colonization in patients by GNB was 9% and 6% in the pericatheter, and no nursing GNB colonization was discovered. The prevalence of MRSA nasal colonization was 19% and 6% in the pericatheter for patients and in the nurses the nasal colonization was 50% and 10% in the hands. We identiied 29 cases of primary bacteremia. The primary bacteremia rate is 1.5 per 1,000 catheter-day or 0.4 episodes per patient per year. Conclusion: We demonstrated a high prevalence of MrSA colonization in patients and nurses in the HD Unit. No relationship was found between primary bacteremia by GNB and patients and nurses’ bacteria colonization by the phenotypic comparison

The Interplay Between the "Low" and "High" Energy CP-Violation in Leptogenesis

We analyse within the "flavoured" leptogenesis scenario of baryon asymmetry generation, the interplay of the "low energy" CP-violation, originating from the PMNS neutrino mixing matrix UU, and the "high energy" CP-violation which can be present in the matrix of neutrino Yukawa couplings, λ\lambda, and can manifest itself only in "high" energy scale processes. The type I see-saw model with three heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos having hierarchical spectrum is considered. The "orthogonal" parametrisation of the matrix of neutrino Yukawa couplings, which involves a complex orthogonal matrix RR, is employed. In this approach the matrix RR is the source of "high energy" CP-violation. Results for normal hierarchical (NH) and inverted hierarchical (IH) light neutrino mass spectrum are derived in the case of decoupling of the heaviest RH Majorana neutrino. It is shown that taking into account the contribution to YBY_B due to the CP-violating phases in the neutrino mixing matrix UU can change drastically the predictions for YBY_B, obtained assuming only "high energy" CP-violation from the RR-matrix is operative in leptogenesis. In the case of IH spectrum, in particular, there exist significant regions in the corresponding parameter space where the purely "high energy" contribution in YBY_B plays a subdominant role in the production of baryon asymmetry compatible with the observations.Comment: Results unchanged; comments and references added; version to be puplished in Eur.Phys.J.
