Collections for people: museums' stored collections as a public resource
Collections in UK museums grew enormously in the latter half of the 20th century yet museum collections, mostly maintained at public expense, are perceived as an underused resource. The Museums Association’s 2005 report, Collections for the Future1, together with press comments and books such as Treasures on Earth (2002)2 and Fragments of the World (2005)3, brought this issue into sharp focus. Collections for People set out to understand the scale of museum stored collections, and the main parameters of their access and use: • What is the size and nature of collections as a resource? How are they distributed, geographically and among different types of museum? • How much are different types of collection used by people other than museum staff? What sort of people use collections? What do they use them for: research, teaching and learning, creative activities, visits for enjoyment such as store tours? • How do users perceive this service? Do museums actively market collections access? Do they publicise what is in their collections? • How do museums facilitate collections use? What are the factors associated with greater use of collections? What do museums see as the barriers to more use
Mainstreaming zero carbon : lessons for built-environment education and training
Education and training are identified as a key means of reducing carbon emissions from buildings to help address the climate emergency. Institutional, industry and organisational responses are shown to be failing in this regard. This editorial introduces the themes and individual papers in the special issue and then explores the current state of the art through pedagogy, theory, training, policy, practice and standards. These areas are interrogated through three fundamental questions. How can education and training be rapidly changed to ensure the creation of zero-carbon built environments? How can this transition be implemented successfully? What positive examples and models can be drawn upon or adapted? In proposing an agenda for change, a new approach to education is set out which combines learning outcomes with new standards and personal values within a continual questioning and holding to account of all stakeholders involved through evidenced outcomes. This draws on evidence from the special issue and Capability Theory which allies competency with personhood to create capability through agency. The process to make this change requires: (1) government intervention, to ensure that the lowest common denominator is zero-carbon best practice within a negotiated, holistic approach to developing the built environment sustainably; (2) new ethical, interdisciplinary and collective educational working practices underpinned by new pedagogical theory and accreditation processes; and (3) rapid auditing and upskilling in climate literacy to bring pressure to bear on governments and institutions to carry out reforms
Suicide Reporting Within British Newspapers' Arts Coverage Content Analysis of Adherence to Media Guidelines
Background: Many suicide prevention strategies promote media guidelines on suicide reporting, given evidence that irresponsible reporting of suicide can influence imitative suicidal behavior. Due to limited resources, monitoring of guideline adherence has tended to focus on news outputs, with a risk of neglecting other journalistic content. Aims: To determine whether British newspapers’ arts coverage adheres to media guidelines on suicide reporting. Method: Purposive sampling was used to capture current national practice on suicide reporting within newspapers’ arts coverage of exhibitions. Recent major UK exhibitions by artists who had died by suicide were identified: Kirchner, Rothko, Gorky, and Van Gogh. Content analysis of all UK national newspaper coverage of these exhibitions was performed to measure the articles’ adherence to widely accepted media guidelines. Results: In all, 68 newspaper reviews satisfied inclusion criteria, with 100% failing to show full adherence to media guidelines: 21% used inappropriate language; 38% provided explicit descriptions of the suicide; 7% employed simplistic explanations for suicide triggers; 27% romanticized the suicide; and 100% omitted information on sources of support. Conclusion: British newspapers’ arts coverage of exhibitions deviates considerably from media guidelines on the reporting of suicide. The findings suggest scope to improve journalists’ awareness of the importance of this component of suicide prevention strategies
A comparison of the domestic satellite communications forecast to the year 2000
The methodologies and results of three NASA-sponsored market demand assessment studies are presented and compared. Forecasts of future satellite addressable traffic (both trunking and customer premises services) were developed for the three main service categories of voice, data and video and subcategories thereof for the benchmark years of 1980, 1990 and 2000. The contractor results are presented on a service by service basis in two formats: equivalent 36 MHz transponders and basic transmission units (voice: half-voice circuits, data: megabits per second and video: video channels). It is shown that while considerable differences exist at the service category level, the overall forecasts by the two contractors are quite similar. ITT estimates the total potential satellite market to be 3594 transponders in the year 2000 with data service comprising 54 percent of this total. The WU outlook for the same time period is 2779 transponders with voice services accounting for 66 percent of the total
NEOWISE observations of comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) as it approaches Mars
The Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) mission
observed comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) three times at 3.4 {\mu}m and 4.6
{\mu}m as the comet approached Mars in 2014. The comet is an extremely
interesting target since its close approach to Mars in late 2014 will be
observed by various spacecraft in-situ. The observations were taken in 2014
Jan., Jul. and Sep. when the comet was at heliocentric distances of 3.82 AU,
1.88 AU, and 1.48 AU. The level of activity increased significantly between the
Jan. and Jul. visits but then decreased by the time of the observations in
Sep., approximately 4 weeks prior to its close approach to Mars. In this work

Collaborative user-centred textile design research for healthcare: improving wellbeing and increasing performance
It has been widely acknowledged that collaboration across disciplines is required in order to develop innovative, sustainable textile solutions that address complex societal problems (Kane & Philpott, 2013; Igoe, 2010). Potential to develop life-changing innovations in the field of advanced textiles for medical and healthcare has been identified as a key growth sector within Scotland, with collaborative cross- disciplinary user-focused design approaches recognised as central to developing new concepts that address human needs (Malins et al. 2012). This paper describes three feasibility studies undertaken by the Textiles programme at the University of Dundee between 2012–2014; collaborative design-led research projects that supported local medical and health care companies by providing key expertise in textile design, functional clothing design methodologies and user-centred processes for design-led innovation. Evolutionary calculations of phase separation in crystallizing white dwarf stars
We present an exploration of the significance of Carbon/Oxygen phase
separation in white dwarf stars in the context of self-consistent evolutionary
calculations. Because phase separation can potentially increase the calculated
ages of the oldest white dwarfs, it can affect the age of the Galactic disk as
derived from the downturn in the white dwarf luminosity function. We find that
the largest possible increase in ages due to phase separation is 1.5 Gyr, with
a most likely value of approximately 0.6 Gyr, depending on the parameters of
our white dwarf models.
The most important factors influencing the size of this delay are the total
stellar mass, the initial composition profile, and the phase diagram assumed
for crystallization. We find a maximum age delay in models with masses of 0.6
solar masses, which is near the peak in the observed white dwarf mass
distribution. We find that varying the opacities (via the metallicity) has
little effect on the calculated age delays.
In the context of Galactic evolution, age estimates for the oldest Galactic
globular clusters range from 11.5 to 16 Gyr, and depend on a variety of
parameters. In addition, a 4 to 6 Gyr delay is expected between the formation
of the globular clusters and that of the Galactic thin disk, while the observed
white dwarf luminosity function gives an age estimate for the thin disk of 9.5
+/-1.0 Gyr, without including the effect of phase separation. Using the above
numbers, we see that phase separation could add between 0 to 3 Gyr to the white
dwarf ages and still be consistent with the overall picture of Galaxy
formation. Our calculated maximum value of 1.5 Gyr fits within these bounds, as
