An experiment was performed to evaluate the nutritive value of vitreous-grain barley grazed by
sheep (instantaneous stocking rate of 66 sheep/ha). Available biomass (2353 kg dry matter (DM)/ha, on average)
was determined at the beginning of the experimental period, which lasted for three consecutive weeks,
and barley heads, leaves and stems were separated for quantification. Important amounts of Wimmera ryegrass
(Lolium rigidum) were also found. Diet selection, intake and digestibility were estimated using the nalkanes
technique. Rumen fermentation characteristics and in situ degradation parameters were obtained
from rumen cannulated animals. Transit kinetics of barley heads, leaves and stems was also assessed. The
proportion of barley heads in the diet consumed was high (0.53 on average) and varied along the grazing
period (0.30 in the first, 0.64 in the second and 0.65 in the third week). Wimmera ryegrass was highly selected
during the first week of the experimental period (0.7) and much lesser afterwards (0.35). Estimated total
DM intake was low (428, 376 and 657 g/day for weeks 1, 2 and 3, respectively), and chan ged with the botanical
composition of the paddock and biomass availability. Average DM digestibility of the diet consumed was
also low (56%) and decreased as the grazing period advanced (67%, 55% and 47% for weeks 1, 2 and 3,
respectively). Rumen pH was, on average, 6.6, whereas ammonia concentration reached a value of 93 mg/l.
Proportions of acetic (0.65), propionic (0.15) and butyric (0.15) acids were representative of a rumen environment
driven by fibre fermentation. Effective DM degradability of barley heads, leaves and stems was, on
average, 81%, 66% and 55%, respectively.
An atlas of Calcium triplet spectra of active galaxies
We present a spectroscopic atlas of active galactic nuclei covering the
region around the 8498, 8542, 8662 Calcium triplet (CaT) lines. The sample
comprises 78 objects, divided into 43 Seyfert 2s, 26 Seyfert 1s, 3 Starburst
and 6 normal galaxies. The spectra pertain to the inner ~300 pc in radius, and
thus sample the central kinematics and stellar populations of active galaxies.
The data are used to measure stellar velocity dispersions (sigma_star) both
with cross-correlation and direct fitting methods. These measurements are found
to be in good agreement with each-other and with those in previous studies for
objects in common. The CaT equivalent width is also measured. We find average
values and sample dispersions of W_CaT of 4.6+/-2.0, 7.0 and 7.7+/-1.0
angstrons for Seyfert 1s, Seyfert 2s and normal galaxies, respectively. We
further present an atlas of [SIII]\lambda 9069 emission line profiles for a
subset of 40 galaxies. These data are analyzed in a companion paper which
addresses the connection between stellar and Narrow Line Region kinematics, the
behaviour of the CaT equivalent width as a function of sigma_star, activity
type and stellar population properties.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Variational determination of multi-qubit geometrical entanglement in NISQ computers
Current noise levels in physical realizations of qubits and quantum
operations limit the applicability of conventional methods to characterize
entanglement. In this adverse scenario, we follow a quantum variational
approach to estimate the geometric measure of entanglement of multiqubit pure
states. The algorithm requires only single-qubit gates and measurements, so it
is well suited for NISQ devices. This is demonstrated by successfully
implementing the method on IBM Quantum devices for Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger
states of , , and qubits. Numerical simulations with random states
show the robustness and accuracy of the method. The scalability of the protocol
is numerically demonstrated via matrix product states techniques up to
qubits
Pedroches Valley is one of the most important areas of the traditional pig breeding in Andalusia (Southern Spain). The Iberian pig variety named Negro de Los Pedroches has its origins in this valley. This is an old autochthonous pig population generated after decades of breeding but now in risk of extinction. Breeders consider this Iberian pig strain as an important element of the Andalusian paddock linked to its cultural and biological patrimony. It seems to have excellent productive capabilities that justify its characterisation and conservation. Microsatellites are used to investigate the genetic relationships with other Iberian pig subpopulations, the use of an accurate panel of loci increases the chance of their definition. Genetic distances suggest that the Negro de Los Pedroches must be considered as another variety.
Assignment tests and related methods combined with the use of microsatellite markers enable the determination of cross-breeding among populations. The best classification of the Iberian Pig seems to be in three main varieties, and several local varieties, with different impacts on the genetic structure of the population. In this study 26 microsatellites were analysed in eight varieties of Iberian Pig and screened for betweenbreed and within-breed specificity. In Spain a terminal cross between Iberian females and Duroc boars is permitted for the production of typical Iberian meat products. Although the use of these hybrids are not recommended for further breeding, it is necessary to evaluate the possible influence of the Duroc pig in the Iberian pig, because the influence of this exotic breed (and others) began even before the establishment of the breed book. Molecular and statistical tools seem to be the best choice for that evaluation to complement detection based on morphological traits.
Program of genetic management of the hispano-arabe horse breed
The Hispano-Arabe horse breed could be considered as a synthetic breed formed in Spain at least two centuries ago, because the farmer intention of create a breed for working and sport according the necessities of the epoch.
The Chato Murciano is the only surviving local breed of pig historically produced in the region of Murcia (Spain). At the present time, it is at risk of extinction, with a census of no more of 40 reproductive animals. In this paper, we are presenting a study of the inbreeding levels of the population, together with a genetic characterization of pure animals and individuals in several successive generations of absorption. We observed high levels of inbreeding approaching 11 percent, which could explain the occurrence of malfunction and poor performance in the population. The microsatellite study showed the genetic profile of the population and the genetic convergence of successive cross-bred generations towards the genetic profile of the purebred animals. This study constitutes a follow up of the recovery program in development over the Chato Murciano.
Phase diagram of the anti-ferromagnetic xxz model in the presence of an external magnetic field
The anisotropic s=1/2 anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in the presence of
an external magnetic field is studied by using the standard quantum
renormalization group. We obtain the critical line of the transition from
partially magnetized (PM) phase to the saturated ferromagnetic (SFM) phase. The
crossover exponent between the PM phase and anti-ferromagnetic Ising (AFI)
phase is evaluated. Our results show that the anisotropy(\d) term is relevant
and causes crossover. These results indicate that the standard RG approach
yields fairly good values for the critical points and their exponents. The
magnetization curve, correlation functions and the ground state energy per site
are obtained and compared with the known exact results.Comment: A LaTex file(20 pages) and 9 PS figure
Throughflow Velocity Crossing the Dome of Erupting Bubbles in 2-D Fluidized Beds
A new non-intrusive method for measuring the throughflow velocity crossing the dome of erupting bubbles in freely bubbling 2-D fluidized beds is presented. Using a high speed video-camera, the dome acceleration, drag force and throughflow velocity profiles are obtained for different experiments, varying the superficial gas velocity. The acceleration profiles show greater values in the dome zone where the gravity component is negligible. The drag force and the throughflow velocity profiles show a uniform value in the central region of the dome (40 deg \u3c \u3c 140 deg) and the total throughflow increases with the superficial gas velocity
