Automation of optimal laminate design
Composite laminates are in widespread use in the aerospace industry. As well as sa tisfying strength and stiffness criteria, the final laminate design has to be manufacturable in terms of compatibility between adjacent panels, thus introducing conflicting constraints on the allowed laminate stacking sequences. An attempt to automate the laminate design process is described. The method uses a mixture of a genetic algorithm and heuristics to satisfy the various design and manufacturing constraints. Multiple zones are allowed, where each zone defines a panel together with a set of applied loads. Guide laminates and a blending methodology allow each zone to share common plies. This creates ply continuity across the structure and avoids the scenario seen in other laminate optimisation tools where each optimised zone contains unrelated laminates which are not practical from a manufacturing perspective
The Effect of Browse Species When Fed as a Supplement to Low Quality Native Grass Hay on Animal Performance
A pen trial was conducted to measure the impact of some browse species when fed as a supplement on the nitrogen (N) and dry matter intake of cattle receiving low quality native grass hay. There were 8 treatments consisting of a nil-supplement control treatment, a urea supplement control, a green oaten hay control and 5 treatment groups based on browse supplements (Albizia lebbeck, Carissa spp. and Bursaria spp.). Treatment effect on increased native pasture intake was related to the amount of supplementary nitrogen (N), such that there was a significant linear relationship between dry matter intake of native pasture and the intake of supplementary N. Similarly, there was a significant relationship between total dry matter intake and total intake of N
The Abelian/Nonabelian Correspondence and Frobenius Manifolds
We propose an approach via Frobenius manifolds to the study (began in
math.AG/0407254) of the relation between rational Gromov-Witten invariants of
nonabelian quotients X//G and those of the corresponding ``abelianized''
quotients X//T, for T a maximal torus in G. The ensuing conjecture expresses
the Gromov-Witten potential of X//G in terms of the potential of X//T. We prove
this conjecture when the nonabelian quotients are partial flag manifolds.Comment: 35 pages, no figure
The contested and contingent outcomes of Thatcherism in the UK
The death of Margaret Thatcher in April 2013 sparked a range of discussions and debates about the significance of her period in office and the political project to which she gave her name: Thatcherism. This article argues that Thatcherism is best understood as a symbolically important part of the emergence of first-phase neoliberalism. It engages with contemporary debates about Thatcherism among Marxist commentators and suggests that several apparently divergent positions can help us now reach a more useful analysis of Thatcherism’s short- and long-term outcomes for British political economy. The outcomes identified include: an initial crisis in the neoliberal project in the UK; the transformation of the party political system to be reflective of the politics of neoliberalism, rather than its contestation; long-term attempts at the inculcation of the neoliberal individual; de-industrialisation and financial sector dependence; and a fractured and partially unconscious working class. In all long-term outcomes, the contribution of Thatcherism is best understood as partial and largely negative, in that it cleared the way for a longer-term and more constructive attempt to embed neoliberal political economy. The paper concludes by suggesting that this analysis can inform current debates on the left of British politics about how to oppose and challenge the imposition of neoliberal discipline today
Psychology students’ perception of and engagement with feedback as a function of year of study
Undergraduate students’ perception of feedback and level of engagement with the feedback they receive have gained increasing attention in the educational literature recently to identify areas which require educators’ attention. However, research in this area has generally been based on limited self-selecting samples, and has not considered how students’ relationship with feedback may alter depending on their year of study. To address this, a survey measuring students’ views and practices regarding feedback was completed at a higher education institution by 447 first-, second- and third-year psychology students, representing 77% of the cohort. Findings revealed that third years responded more negatively in both areas than their first- and second-year counterparts, whose ratings on these aspects themselves were far from optimal. These findings highlight the need for early interventions to improve students’ perception of and engagement with feedback in the earlier years, and to prevent the recorded deterioration later on in the degree course

A convenient five step synthesis of (S)-homolysine, incorporating a key olefin cross-metathesis step in the chain extension methodology, has been developed, together with a six step related synthesis of a new homologue of arginine, (S)-bishomoarginine
Quantum deformations of associative algebras and integrable systems
Quantum deformations of the structure constants for a class of associative
noncommutative algebras are studied. It is shown that these deformations are
governed by the quantum central systems which has a geometrical meaning of
vanishing Riemann curvature tensor for Christoffel symbols identified with the
structure constants. A subclass of isoassociative quantum deformations is
described by the oriented associativity equation and, in particular, by the
WDVV equation. It is demonstrated that a wider class of weakly (non)associative
quantum deformations is connected with the integrable soliton equations too. In
particular, such deformations for the three-dimensional and
infinite-dimensional algebras are described by the Boussinesq equation and KP
hierarchy, respectively.Comment: Numeration of the formulas is correcte
Mirror Map as Generating Function of Intersection Numbers: Toric Manifolds with Two K\"ahler Forms
In this paper, we extend our geometrical derivation of expansion coefficients
of mirror maps by localization computation to the case of toric manifolds with
two K\"ahler forms. Especially, we take Hirzebruch surfaces F_{0}, F_{3} and
Calabi-Yau hypersurface in weighted projective space P(1,1,2,2,2) as examples.
We expect that our results can be easily generalized to arbitrary toric
