This research aims to analyse the construction of reality on sharia bylaws in the English newspaper The Jakarta Post. The Jakarta Post is currently the biggest national English newspaper with readership includes educated middle class and high-end as well as foreign audience, making its role siginificant in representing news of Indonesia abroad. This qualitative research uses descriptive design and framing analysis to analyse the framing of news about the implementation of sharia bylaws by The Jakarta Post. The research concludes that The Jakarta Post frames sharia bylaws as controversial and incompatible with the legal system and the plural society of Indonesia. The construction of reality is influenced by its pluralist and secularist ideology

Individualisme dan Liberalisme dalam Sekularisme Media Amerika

Liberal thoughts argue that men have rational and logical ability to decide the rightest and best choice for themselves, which means that men are autonomous in determining their life\u27s orientation and truth. Therefore men cannot be forced to accept certain general truth from the society because each person have distinguished goal, which is incommensurable. The single interpretation of truth is considered incompatible with human ability to contemplate their objectives. This makes the basis of the secular practice in American society; the separation of church (religion) and state, where religion is considered private matters. The amendment of the constitution clearly notes that state should not make any law respecting or against practice of any religion. This practice can be seen in the American mass media, where most hold liberal view and shun away from religious debates. Media as a public sphere play an important role in facilitating the debate about discourses, therefore refrain from private matters such as religion

The increasing intensity of International relations and globalization has spurred interests in local events of not only domestic audience but also foreign audience. Some events have become the interest of the public in other countries that the foreign media publish news about the events. The media cover events in a foreign country because the events will influence the government\u27s foreign policy toward that country. Presidential election leads to the replacement of a country\u27s leader. Meanwhile, a country\u27s International relations and foreign policy are influenced by decision making individual such as state and government leader. Personalities, perceptions, activities, and leadership style of the leader influence foreign policy of a country, therefore different leader will make different foreign policy. Indonesian presidential election is covered by foreign media particularly those in countries with good relations with Indonesia. Some Americans pay attention to Indonesian presidential election because it will affect the two countries\u27 bilateral relation. The New York Times, the most referred print and digital media by American foreign policy makers, also covered the election. Covering the two presidential candidates\u27 background, the New York Times encouraged the American government to cooperate fully with whoever would be elected, and continue good relation with Indonesia

Indonesia's Death Penalty Execution From the Realist View of International Law

During the first half of 2015, Indonesia executed fourteen prisoners who had been convicted of smuggling drugs to and from Indonesia. Twelve of them were foreigners. This execution led to withdrawal of the ambassador of Brazil, Netherlands, and Australia, whose citizens are among those executed. Criticism came from around the world, and small number of Indonesians. Most critics cited human rights abuse; and death penalty is against International law. However, the lack of further explanation can make the statement misunderstood. The distinctive nature of International law is one factor that makes death penalty issue is still debatable. Another factor is the inconsistent world's reaction on human rights issues, showing realistic behavior in International relations. Therefore it is important to understand the nature of International law from the realist perspective of International relations in explaining death penalty in Indonesia. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate Indonesia's death penalty from the realist perspective of International law

Background: Activities and participation domains are affected in people with vestibular disorders; however, specialized outcome measures for evaluating activities and participation according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) do not exist. Purpose: To develop and validate the Vestibular Activities and Participation (VAP) measure for people with vestibular disorders according to the ICF. Methods: A list of activities and participation candidate items were generated and included in a survey. The survey was then sent to a panel of vestibular experts and agreement was obtained on the items to include in the VAP using the Delphi technique. The psychometric properties of the VAP were established including test-retest reliability; minimum detectable change at 95% confidence level (MDC95), concurrent validity with the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule II (WHODAS II); convergent validity with the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), and discriminant validity. The test-retest reliability of the VAP total score was estimated using the Intra Class Correlation Coefficient (ICC), model (3,1) and the 95% confidence interval (CI). Agreement per-item was estimated using Cohen's kappa statistics. Concurrent and convergent validity were examined using the Spearman correlation coefficient (rho). Discriminant validity was established using a generalized linear model (GLM). Results: Fifty five activities and participation items were generated in which 32 of them had 70% or greater agreement for inclusion in the VAP. The test-retest reliability of the VAP total score was excellent (ICC=.95), (CI=.91-.97). Un-weighted kappa (.41-.80) and weighted kappa (.58-.94) were good to excellent. The VAP had strong correlation (rho=.7, p<.05) with the WHODAS II and moderate to strong correlations (rho=.54-.74) with the DHI subscale and total scores. The MDC95 was .58. After adjustment for age, gender and self-reported imbalance were independent predictors of the transformed VAP total score. Conclusion: The VAP measure was developed to examine the disabling effect of vestibular disorders on people's activities and participation based on the ICF. The VAP demonstrated excellent reliability and was validated with external instruments

Quantitative Kinematic Characterization of Reaching Impairments in Mice After a Stroke

Background and Objective. Kinematic analysis of reaching movements is increasingly used to evaluate upper extremity function after cerebrovascular insults in humans and has also been applied to rodent models. Such analyses can require time-consuming frame-by-frame inspections and are affected by the experimenter's bias. In this study, we introduce a semi-automated algorithm for tracking forepaw movements in mice. This methodology allows us to calculate several kinematic measures for the quantitative assessment of performance in a skilled reaching task before and after a focal cortical stroke. Methods. Mice were trained to reach for food pellets with their preferred paw until asymptotic performance was achieved. Photothrombosis was then applied to induce a focal ischemic injury in the motor cortex, contralateral to the trained limb. Mice were tested again once a week for 30 days. A high frame rate camera was used to record the movements of the paw, which was painted with a nontoxic dye. An algorithm was then applied off-line to track the trajectories and to compute kinematic measures for motor performance evaluation. Results. The tracking algorithm proved to be fast, accurate, and robust. A number of kinematic measures were identified as sensitive indicators of poststroke modifications. Based on end-point measures, ischemic mice appeared to improve their motor performance after 2 weeks. However, kinematic analysis revealed the persistence of specific trajectory adjustments up to 30 days poststroke, indicating the use of compensatory strategies. Conclusions. These results support the use of kinematic analysis in mice as a tool for both detection of poststroke functional impairments and tracking of motor improvements following rehabilitation. Similar studies could be performed in parallel with human studies to exploit the translational value of this skilled reaching analysis
