    Strain versus stress in a model granular material: a Devil's staircase

    The series of equilibrium states reached by disordered packings of rigid, frictionless discs in two dimensions, under gradually varying stress, are studied by numerical simulations. Statistical properties of trajectories in configuration space are found to be independent of specific assumptions ruling granular dynamics, and determined by geometry only. A monotonic increase in some macroscopic loading parameter causes a discrete sequence of rearrangements. For a biaxial compression, we show that, due to the statistical importance of such events of large magnitudes, the dependence of the resulting strain on stress direction is a Levy flight in the thermodynamic limit.Comment: REVTeX, 4 pages, 5 included PostScript figures.     Scattering by a toroidal coil

    In this paper we consider the Schr\"odinger operator in R3{\mathbb R}^3 with a long-range magnetic potential associated to a magnetic field supported inside a torus T{\mathbb{T}}. Using the scheme of smooth perturbations we construct stationary modified wave operators and the corresponding scattering matrix S(λ)S(\lambda). We prove that the essential spectrum of S(λ)S(\lambda) is an interval of the unit circle depending only on the magnetic flux ϕ\phi across the section of T\mathbb{T}. Additionally we show that, in contrast to the Aharonov-Bohm potential in R2{\mathbb{R}}^2, the total scattering cross-section is always finite.     Θεωρώντας τον ρόλο του Monochamus galloprovincialis κλειδί στην εξάπλωση του νηματώδη του πεύκου στην Ευρώπη, η διαλεύκανση του εύρους των ξενιστών και των προτιμήσεων του Μ. galloprovincialis σε αυτούς είναι πρωτεύουσας σημασίας για την προστασία του δάσους. Συγκριτικές μελέτες σε συνθήκες εργαστηρίου διεξήχθησαν με σκοπό την διευκρίνηση των διατροφικών και ωοθετικών προτιμήσεων των ενηλίκων αυτού του εντόμου καθώς και της ανάπτυξης των προνυμφών του στα P. sylvestris και P. pinaster. Η διατροφή και η ωοτοκία βρέθηκαν στατιστικά πιο σημαντικές στο P. sylvestris αλλά καμία διαφορά δεν βρέθηκε στην επιβίωση των προνυμφών στα δύο είδη πεύκου. Οι προνύμφες έφτασαν στην 4η ηλικία νωρίτερα στο P. sylvestris από ότι στο P. pinaster. Τα αποτελέσματα της παρούσης μελέτης ισχυροποιούν τις υποψίες για μια γρήγορη μελλοντική εξάπλωση του νηματώδη σε ολόκληρη την Ευρώπη.Considering the key role of Monochamus galloprovincialis (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in the dispersion of the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner & Bührer) Nickle (Nematoda: Aphelenchoidea), in Europe, defining the host spectrum and preference of M. galloprovincialis is of primary importance for forest management. Therefore, comparative studies under laboratory conditions were performed in order to define the feeding and oviposition preferences of M. galloprovincialis adults as well as the larval development on Pinus sylvestris and Pinus pinaster. Both nutrition and oviposition were significantly higher on P. sylvestris. However, no difference was found when comparing larval survival on the two Pinus species even though larvae attended the fourth instar earlier when reared on P. sylvestris than on P. pinaster. The results of this study reinforce the suspicions of a future rapid propagation of the nematode, by M. galloprovincialis, into the Pine forests all over Europe

    Branching Transition of a Directed Polymer in Random Medium

    A directed polymer is allowed to branch, with configurations determined by global energy optimization and disorder. A finite size scaling analysis in 2D shows that, if disorder makes branching more and more favorable, a critical transition occurs from the linear scaling regime first studied by Huse and Henley [Phys. Rev. Lett. 54, 2708 (1985)] to a fully branched, compact one. At criticality clear evidence is obtained that the polymer branches at all scales with dimension dˉc{\bar d}_c and roughness exponent ζc\zeta_c satisfying (dˉc1)/ζc=0.13±0.01({\bar d}_c-1)/\zeta_c = 0.13\pm 0.01, and energy fluctuation exponent ωc=0.26±0.02\omega_c=0.26 \pm0.02, in terms of longitudinal distanceComment: REVTEX, 4 pages, 3 encapsulated eps figure

    Cleavage of C3 by Neutral Proteases from Granulocytes in Pleural Empyema

    The possibility of direct inactivation of C3 by granular enzymes from polymorphonuclear leukocytes(PMNLs) in pleural empyema was examined. As a group, pleural empyema from 10 patients with purulent effusions and a positive bacteriologic culture cleaved significantly more 125I-labeled C3 bound to Sepharose (18.4% ± 7.3%) than did 19sterile pleural effusions (2.4% ± 0.9%; P << 0.001)and sonicates from bacterial strains commonly found in empyema (1.4% ± 0.2%). Granular enzymesfrom 7 × 106 PMNLs cleaved 78.5% of 125I-labeled C3 bound to Sepharose. When proteolysis of 125I-labeled C3 after incubation with pleural empyema or PMNL granular enzymes was examined with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, breakdown products were similar. Granulocyte elastase-like activity was detected in four samples of pleural empyema. Granulocyte elastase inhibitors, as well as 10% human serum, effectively suppressed cleavage of C3 and elastase-like activity. In pleural empyemas, granular enzymes from PMNLs, especially elastase, apparently contribute to low complement-mediated opsonic activity by direct inactivation of C

    Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of lipid nanocapsules

    Lipid nanocapsules (LNCs) offer a promising method for the entrapment and nanovectorisation of lipophilic molecules. This new type of nanocarrier, formulated according to a solvent-free process and using only regulatory-approved components, exhibits many prerequisites for being well tolerated. Although toxicological reference values have already been obtained in mice, interaction of LNCs at the cell level needs to be elucidated. LNCs, measuring from 27.0±0.1nm (25nm LNCs) and 112.1±1.8nm (100nm LNCs) and with a zeta potential between -38.7±1.2mV and +9.18±0.4mV, were obtained by a phase inversion process followed by post-insertion of carboxy- or amino-DSPE-PEG. Trypan blue, MTS and neutral red uptake (NRU) assays were performed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of LNCs on mouse macrophage-like cells RAW264.7 after 24h of exposure. The determination of 50% lethal concentration (LC50) showed a size effect of LNCs on toxicity profiles: LC50 ranged from 1.036mg/L (MTS) and 0.477mg/mL (NRU) for 25nm LNCs, to 4.42mg/mL (MTS) and 2.18mg/mL (NRU) for 100nm LNCs. Surfactant Solutol® HS15 has been shown to be the only constituent to exhibit cytotoxicity; its LC50 reached 0.427mg/mL. Moreover, LNCs were not more toxic than their components in simple mixtures. At sublethal concentration, 100nm LNCs only were able to induce a significant production of nitric oxide (NO) by RAW264.7 cells, as assessed by the Griess reaction. Again, surfactant was the only component responsible for an increased NO release (1.8±0.2-fold). Genotoxicity assays revealed no DNA damage on human lymphocytes in both the in vitro Comet and micronucleus assays using 4-hour and 24-hour treatments, respectively

    Exciton-Polaritons in Uniaxially Aligned Organic Microcavities

    Here we report the fabrication and optical characterization of organic microcavities containing liquid-crystalline conjugated polymers (LCCPs): poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT), poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) and poly(2,7-(9,9-dihexylfluorene)-co-bithiophene) (F6T2) aligned on top of a thin transparent Sulfuric Dye 1 (SD1) photoalignment layer. We extract the optical constants of the aligned films using variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry and fabricate metallic microcavities in which the ultrastrong coupling regime is manifest both for the aligned and non-aligned LCCPs. Transition dipole moment alignment enables a systematic increase in the interaction strength, with unprecedented solid-state Rabi splitting energies up to 1.80 eV for F6T2, the first to reach the visible spectrum; with an optical gap of 2.79 eV this also gives the highest-to-date organic microcavity coupling ratio, 65%\%. We also demonstrate that the coupling strength is polarization-dependent with bright polaritons photoluminescence for TE polarization parallel to the transition dipoles and either no emission or weakly coupled emission from the corresponding TM polarization. The use of uniaxally aligned organic microcavities with switchable coupling strength offers exciting prospects for direct observations of ultrastrong coupling signatures, quantum simulation, polaritonics and condensation related phenomena.Comment: Supplementary Information is available upon request (preferably via e-mail
