Population, Land Use, and Housing Trends in The Netherlands Since 1950

From a spatial point of view, the topic of environmental quality deals with the mutual adjustment of different societal claims in the spatial setting, aiming at the development and/or maintenance of adequate conditions for quality of life. Since 1950, the population, and in particular the number of households, in the Netherlands have increased considerably, postulating large demands to housing and residential land use. In this paper, major demographic, land use, and housing trends in the Netherlands since 1950 are outlined in order to discern the magnitude and importance of these changes at the present time. Attention is paid to changes regarding the availability of residential space in general, and of living space within the house

Preclinical pharmacological profile of nomegestrol acetate, a synthetic 19-nor-progesterone derivative

Abstract Background Nomegestrol acetate (NOMAC), a synthetic progestogen derived from 19-nor-progesterone, recently completed clinical trials for use with 17beta-estradiol in a new monophasic combined oral contraceptive. In this review, published as well as previously unpublished preclinical studies that detail the effects of NOMAC on estrogenic, progestogenic, and androgenic systems, as well as mineralocorticoid, glucocorticoid, bone, and metabolic indices are described. Methods In vitro assays to determine NOMAC structure-activity relationships used tissue derived from rat uteri. Transactivation profiles were performed using Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells transfected with cDNAs encoding human steroid receptors. Estrogenic and anti-estrogenic activities were monitored in vivo in rats as well as in vitro in human breast cancer cells. Standard in vivo techniques were used in rats to determine progestational activity; antigonadotropic, androgenic, mineralocorticoid, and glucocorticoid activities; as well as effects on bone and other metabolic indices. Ovulation inhibition was monitored in rats and primates. NOMAC’s effects on cardiovascular systems were determined in dogs and primates. Results NOMAC was without significant agonistic or antagonistic activity for estrogen receptor alpha or beta in vitro, and inhibited ovulation in rats and monkeys (2.5 mg/kg and 1 mg/kg, respectively). NOMAC lacked androgenic, antimineralocorticoid, glucocorticoid, and metabolic activity and exhibited moderate anti-androgenic activity in rats. NOMAC did not affect bone mineral density (BMD) in rats or hemodynamic and electrophysiologic parameters in dogs and primates. Conclusions NOMAC is a selective progestogen structurally similar to progesterone that has modest anti-androgenic activity and does not affect lipid or carbohydrate metabolism, BMD, or many cardiovascular parameters in selected animal models.</p

    An in-situ trainable gesture classifier

Gesture recognition, i.e., the recognition of pre-defined gestures by arm or hand movements, enables a natural extension of the way we currently interact with devices (Horsley, 2016). Commercially available gesture recognition systems are usually pre-trained: the developers specify a set of gestures, and the user is provided with an algorithm that can recognize just these gestures. To improve the user experience, it is often desirable to allow users to define their own gestures. In that case, the user needs to train the recognition system herself by a set of example gestures. Crucially, this scenario requires learning gestures from just a few training examples in order to avoid overburdening the user. We present a new in-situ trainable gesture classifier based on a hierarchical probabilistic modeling approach. Casting both learning and recognition as probabilistic inference tasks yields a principled way to design and evaluate algorithm candidates. Moreover, the Bayesian approach facilitates learning of prior knowledge about gestures, which leads to fewer needed examples for training new gestures

"Care is not care if it isn't person-centred": A content analysis of how Person-Centred Care is expressed on Twitter

Background: Person-Centred Care (PCC) has been the subject of growing interest in recent decades. Even though there is no conceptual consensus regarding PCC, many health-care institutions have implemented elements into their care. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the PCC topics presented by different stakeholder groups on Twitter and to explore the perceptions of PCC within the content of the tweets. Method: Tweets with mentions of PCC in various translations were collected through a Twitter Application Programming Interface in October 2019. The tweets were analysed using quantitative and qualitative content analysis. Results: Five stakeholder groups and ten topics were identified within 1540 tweets. The results showed that the PCC content focused on providing information and opinions rather than expressing experiences of PCC in practice. Qualitative content analysis of 428 selected tweets revealed content on a vision that all care should be person-centred but that the realization of that vision was more complicated. Conclusions: Twitter has shown to be a quick and non-intrusive data collection tool for uncovering stakeholders' expressions concerning PCC. The PCC content revealed that stakeholders feel a need to 'educate' others about their perception of PCC when experiences and real-life applications are missing. More action should be taken for the implementation of PCC rather than circulating PCC vision without operationalization in care
