A Historiometric Examination of Machiavellianism and a New Taxonomy of Leadership

Although researchers have extensively examined the relationship between charismatic leadership and Machiavellianism (Deluga, 2001; Gardner & Avolio, 1995; House & Howell, 1992), there has been a lack of investigation of Machiavellianism in relation to alternative forms of outstanding leadership. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationship between Machiavellianism and a new taxonomy of outstanding leadership comprised of charismatic, ideological, and pragmatic leaders. Using an historiometric approach, raters assessed Machiavellianism via the communications of 120 outstanding leaders in organizations across the domains of business, political, military, and religious institutions. Academic biographies were used to assess twelve general performance measures as well as twelve general controls and five communication specific controls. The results indicated that differing levels of Machiavellianism is evidenced across the differing leader types as well as differing leader orientation. Assessing Theoretical Conclusions With Blinded Inference to Investigate a Potential Inference Crisis

Scientific advances across a range of disciplines hinge on the ability to make inferences about unobservable theoretical entities on the basis of empirical data patterns. Accurate inferences rely on both discovering valid, replicable data patterns and accurately interpreting those patterns in terms of their implications for theoretical constructs. The replication crisis in science has led to widespread efforts to improve the reliability of research findings, but comparatively little attention has been devoted to the validity of inferences based on those findings. Using an example from cognitive psychology, we demonstrate a blinded-inference paradigm for assessing the quality of theoretical inferences from data. Our results reveal substantial variability in experts’ judgments on the very same data, hinting at a possible inference crisis

Educação a Distância e Cybersêniors: um foco nas estratégias pedagógicas

O presente artigo versa sobre a construção de estratégias pedagógicas na Educação a Distância (EAD) no intuito de incluir os cybersêniors em cursos virtuais. O estudo foi realizado através de uma abordagem qualitativa e quantitativa. Foi composto por 7 etapas de desenvolvimento. A coleta de dados ocorreu a partir de observações participantes, entrevistas, questionários e produções tecnológicas dos participantes. Os resultados mostraram a necessidade de aprofundar aspectos como a resiliência e a reminiscência com o público mais velho. Com um maior aporte gerontológico será possível propiciar ações que abarquem o potencial educacional da EAD com os idosos
