    L’analyse du chômage par les flux

    Le présent travail s’attache à l’étude de la sélectivité du chômage à l’entrée et à la sortie. Dans un premier temps, les auteurs utilisent les données rétrospectives sur la durée du chômage, tirées de l’Enquête sur la Population Active du Canada, pour définir des indices caractéristiques de certaines catégories de la population sur le marché du travail. Dans un deuxième temps, ils ont recours à des statistiques de flux bruts (obtenues par observation suivie d’un mois à l’autre) qui offrent une mesure directe des entrées et des sorties du chômage, ainsi que l’indication de l’origine et de la destination (Occupés ou Inactifs) des chômeurs. L’exploitation de données provisoires de ce type pour l’année 1978 au Canada, montre en particulier l’importance des flux entre la catégorie des « Inactifs » et celle des « Chômeurs » et soulève le problême de l’adéquation de la définition officielle du chômage, en particulier lorsqu’elle s’applique aux femmes

    The purpose of the current study was to collect data from self-report measures (happiness, extraversion, depression, self-image, and self-esteem) created by laboratory students in conjunction with validated measures of state self-esteem, sensation seeking, and demographic variables that would allow for the reasonable application of a variety of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to learn data analysis. An undergraduate under faculty supervision performed reliability analysis, correlational analysis, independent samples t tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), and created a multiple regression model to better understand the application and conceptual logic underlying many of the statistical tests used in contemporary psychology. It was predicted this model would further develop critical thinking and provide additional practice conducting research

    Strain-induced charge transfer and polarity control of a heterosheet comprising C60 and graphene

    Using density functional theory combined with the effective screening medium method, the energetics and electronic structure of a C60 molecular sheet adsorbed on graphene were studied in terms of biaxial strains. The optimum spacing and interlayer interaction monotonically decreases and increases, respectively, with an increasing biaxial tensile strain. The biaxial compressive strain induces electron transfer from the graphene to C60 at a 2% lateral compression, leading to an all-carbon charge transfer complex. The heterosheet possesses an intrinsic dipole moment along the graphene-to-C60 molecular layer direction

    Hand-held lactate analyzer as a tool for the real-time measurement of physical fatigue before slaughter and pork quality prediction

    The objectives of this study were to assess the relationship between blood lactate variation measured at the plant, and pork quality variation on a large sample size and under commercial preslaughter handling conditions. A total of 600 pigs were randomly chosen on arrival at a commercial slaughter plant and blood samples taken from the ear vein at unloading (UN), after lairage (LA), in the restrainer (RE; before stunning) and at exsanguination (EX) were analysed for lactate content using a Lactate Scout Analyzer (LSA). In order to have a large range of measures, pigs were distributed into two groups; one kept in lairage overnight (G1) and the other for 2 to 3 h (G2) before slaughter. Meat quality was assessed in the Longissimus thoracis (LT), Semimembranosus (SM) and Adductor (AD) muscles by measuring the pH 30 min postmortem (pH1) and at 24 h postmortem (pHu), the colour and the drip loss. Blood lactate levels did not differ between G1 and G2 (P>0.05). A reduced muscle lactate and glucose contents (P=0.02 and P=0.004, respectively) resulting in a lower (P<0.001) glycolytic potential (GP) was observed in the LT muscle of G1 pigs when compared with G2 loins. In the LT muscle of G1 pigs, the lower GP resulted in an increased pHu (r= 120.67; P<0.001), decreased drip loss (r=0.57; P<0.001) and darker colour (r=0.50; P<0.001) compared with G2. In both G1 and G2 pigs, the lower GP was correlated to higher pHu value in the SM and AD muscles (r= 120.73; P<0.001). The greatest correlation was observed in G2 between blood lactate levels at LA and pHu value of the SM and AD muscles (r=0.46 and r=0.44, respectively; P<0.001 for both muscles). The second greatest correlation was found between blood lactate levels at EX and pH1 value in the SM muscle in both groups (r= 120.37 and r= 120.41, respectively; P<0.001 for both groups). Based on the results of this study, it appears that blood lactate levels, as measured by the LSA, reliably reflect the physiological response of pigs to perimortem stress and may help explain the variation in pork quality

    Expansion of a novel population of NK cells with low ribosome expression in juvenile dermatomyositis

    Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a pediatric autoimmune disease associated with characteristic rash and proximal muscle weakness. To gain insight into differential lymphocyte gene expression in JDM, peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 4 new-onset JDM patients and 4 healthy controls were sorted into highly enriched lymphocyte populations for RNAseq analysis. NK cells from JDM patients had substantially greater differentially expressed genes (273) than T (57) and B (33) cells. Upregulated genes were associated with the innate immune response and cell cycle, while downregulated genes were associated with decreased ribosomal RNA. Suppressed ribosomal RNA in JDM NK cells was validated by measuring transcription and phosphorylation levels. We confirmed a population of low ribosome expressing NK cells in healthy adults and children. This population of low ribosome NK cells was substantially expanded in 6 treatment-naĂŻve JDM patients and was associated with decreased NK cell degranulation. The enrichment of this NK low ribosome population was completely abrogated in JDM patients with quiescent disease. Together, these data suggest NK cells are highly activated in new-onset JDM patients with an increased population of low ribosome expressing NK cells, which correlates with decreased NK cell function and resolved with control of active disease

    Hierarchical clustering as a tool to develop a classification scheme for rabbit meat quality

    [EN] This study aimed to characterise the quality of meat from commercially-raised rabbits. Animals came from five different producers and were  laughtered in three different plants under provincial or federal inspection jurisdiction. Animal behaviour evaluated by scan sampling prior to feed withdrawal (FW) and transport, as well as blood lactate concentration at exsanguination, did not raise concerns with respect to stress. Stomach pH was higher (P=0.047) when the FW time was short (≤13.5 h), at a mean value of 2.23. All pH values measured 1 h post-mortem from the Biceps femoris (BF) and almost all (97.6%) from the Longissimus lumborum (LL) were higher than 6. Values for ultimate pH measured 24 h postmortem(pHu) ranged from 5.80 to 6.83 and from 5.70 to 6.70 for BF and LL muscles, respectively. The maximum meat drip loss recorded was 2.6%, while cooking loss reached 30%. Meat lightness (L*) and colour intensity (C*) for the long FW times (≥23 h) were no different from those with short and intermediate (15.5 to 17.3 h) FW times. However, these colour parameters were higher for the short FW time class compared to the intermediate FW time class (P<0.02). A hierarchical cluster analysis based on pHu, cooking loss and lightness (L*) from 200 rabbit loins was performed. Of the four clusters created, clusters 1 and 2 had the best and second-best meat quality, respectively. Clusters 3 and 4 had the lowest meat quality and presented DFD-like (dark, firm and dry) characteristics. Meat did not exhibit PSE-like (pale, soft, exudative) characteristics, even for the slaughter lot with the minimum mean pHu. Of the eight slaughter lots evaluated, more than 50% of the meat from three of them fell into clusters 3 and 4; all three were in the intermediate FW time class. Overall, the quality of rabbit meat analysed was acceptable for commercial use, but rather variable. Pigs were distributedinto two pen groups, one kept in lairage overnight (G1) and the other kept between 2 and 3 h before slaughter (G2).Meat quality was assessed in the Longissimus dorsi(LD), Semimembranosus (SM) and Adductor(AD) muscles. Data were analyzed using Spearman correlations and the MIXED procedure of SAS. Greater (P=0.009) levels of blood lactate were found in pigs laired longer, which resulted in LD and SM muscles with greater pHu (P=0.03 and P=0.001, respectively), as well as lower L* (P=0.005and P=0.008, respectively)and drip loss (P=0.01 and P=0.02, respectively). The greatest correlation with lactate levels was observed at LA with pHu value of the SM and AD muscles (r=0.40; P<0.001). LSA lactate levels reliably reflect the physiological response of pigs to preslaughter procedures and may help explain the variation in pork quality as measured in the ham muscles

    Taxonomy and structure of the Romanian personality lexicon

    We identified 1746 personality-relevant trait-adjectives in a Romanian dictionary, of which 412 were classified as descriptors of dispositions by 10 judges. Self-ratings were collected from 515 participants on those 412 adjectives, and the ratings were factored using principal components analysis. Solutions with different numbers of factors were analysed. The two- and three-factor solutions, respectively, confirmed the Big Two and Big Three of personality traits. A five-factor solution reflected the Big Five model with a fifth factor emphasising Rebelliousness versus Conventionality. The five-factor solution was related to the International Personality Item Pool-Big Five scales, and the highest correlations were indeed between the corresponding factors and scales. A six-factor solution was indicative of the six-factor model as expressed in the HEXACO model, yet with a weak Honesty-Humility factor. Additional analysis with self-ratings from 218 participants on marker-scales for the six-factor solution and on the six scales of the HEXACO did not produce a clear one-to-one correspondence between the two sets of scales, confirming indeed that the six-factor model was only partially found
