Aerospace vehicle
A dual structure aerospace vehicle is described which has an aeroshell structure and an internally disposed separable and reusable integral tank/thrust structure. The tank/thrust structure is inuslated for cryogenic fuels and the cavity within aeroshell is insulated from the tank/thrust structure. An internal support ring within the cavity serves as an attachment for lugs on the tank/thrust structure via double hinges. The aft end of tank/thrust structure is provided with rocket engines and exit nozzles with a trunnion supporting the tank/thrust structure within the aeroshell
The interpretive approach to religious education : challenging Thompson's interpretation
In a recent book chapter, Matthew Thompson makes some criticisms of my work, including the interpretive approach to religious education and the research and activity of Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit. Against the background of a discussion of religious education in the public sphere, my response challenges Thompson’s account, commenting on his own position in relation to dialogical approaches to religious education. The article rehearses my long held view that the ideal form of religious education in fully state funded schools of a liberal democracy should be ‘secular’ but not ‘secularist’; there should be no implication of an axiomatic secular humanist interpretation of religions
Daze fasteners
A daze fastener system for connecting two or more structural elements wherein the structural elements and fastener parts have substantially different coefficient of thermal expansion physical property characteristics is employed in this invention. By providing frusto-conical abutting surfaces between the structural elements and fastener parts any differences in thermal expansion/contraction between the parts is translated to sliding motion and avoids deleterious thermal stresses in the connection. An essential feature for isotropic homogeneous material connections is that at least two sets of mating surfaces are required wherein each set of mating surfaces have line element extensions that pass through a common point
Carrier extraction circuit
Feedback loop extracts demodulated reference signals from IF input and feeds signal back to demodulator. Since reference signal is extracted directly from carrier, no separate reference need be transmitted. Circuit obtains coherent carrier from balanced or unbalanced four-phase signal of varying characteristics

Resolving the structure of TiBe
There has been considerable controversy regarding the structure of
TiBe, which is variously reported as hexagonal and tetragonal. Lattice
dynamics simulations based on density functional theory show the tetragonal
phase space group to be more stable over all temperatures, while the
hexagonal phase exhibits an imaginary phonon mode, which, if followed, would
lead to the cell adopting the tetragonal structure. We then report the
predicted ground state elastic constants and temperature dependence of the bulk

Generalization of the Schott energy in electrodynamic radiation theory
We discuss the origin of the Schott energy in the Abraham-Lorentz version of
electrodynamic radiation theory and how it can be used to explain some apparent
paradoxes. We also derive the generalization of this quantity for the
Ford-O'Connell equation, which has the merit of being derived exactly from a
microscopic Hamiltonian for an electron with structure and has been shown to be
free of the problems associated with the Abraham-Lorentz theory. We emphasize
that the instantaneous power supplied by the applied force not only gives rise
to radiation (acceleration fields), but it can change the kinetic energy of the
electron and change the Schott energy of the velocity fields. The important
role played by boundary conditions is noted
Support Vector Machine classification of strong gravitational lenses
The imminent advent of very large-scale optical sky surveys, such as Euclid
and LSST, makes it important to find efficient ways of discovering rare objects
such as strong gravitational lens systems, where a background object is
multiply gravitationally imaged by a foreground mass. As well as finding the
lens systems, it is important to reject false positives due to intrinsic
structure in galaxies, and much work is in progress with machine learning
algorithms such as neural networks in order to achieve both these aims. We
present and discuss a Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm which makes use of
a Gabor filterbank in order to provide learning criteria for separation of
lenses and non-lenses, and demonstrate using blind challenges that under
certain circumstances it is a particularly efficient algorithm for rejecting
false positives. We compare the SVM engine with a large-scale human examination
of 100000 simulated lenses in a challenge dataset, and also apply the SVM
method to survey images from the Kilo-Degree Survey.Comment: Accepted by MNRA
Molecular clouds and clumps in the Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Galactic Ring Survey
The Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (BU-FCRAO)
Galactic Ring Survey (GRS) of 13 CO (1-0) emission covers Galactic longitudes
18 deg < l < 55.7 deg and Galactic latitudes |b| <= 1 deg. Using the SEQUOIA
array on the FCRAO 14m telescope, the GRS fully sampled the 13 CO Galactic
emission (46 arcsec angular resolution on a 22 arcsec grid) and achieved a
spectral resolution of 0.21 km/s. Because the GRS uses 13 CO, an optically thin
tracer, rather than 12 CO, an optically thick tracer, the GRS allows a much
better determination of column density and also a cleaner separation of
velocity components along a line of sight. With this homogeneous, fully-sampled
survey of 13 CO, emission, we have identified 829 molecular clouds and 6124
clumps throughout the inner Galaxy using the CLUMPFIND algorithm. Here we
present details of the catalog and a preliminary analysis of the properties of
the molecular clouds and their clumps. Moreover, we compare clouds inside and
outside of the 5 kpc ring and find that clouds within the ring typically have
warmer temperatures, higher column densities, larger areas, and more clumps
compared to clouds located outside the ring. This is expected if these clouds
are actively forming stars. This catalog provides a useful tool for the study
of molecular clouds and their embedded young stellar objects.Comment: 29 pages. ApJ in pres
Cosmic Superstring Scattering in Backgrounds
We generalize the calculation of cosmic superstring reconnection probability
to non-trivial backgrounds. This is done by modeling cosmic strings as wound
tachyon modes in the 0B theory, and the spacetime effective action is then used
to couple this to background fields. Simple examples are given including
trivial and warped compactifications. Generalization to strings is
