    Connecting Through Communication - Incorporating Intercultural Competency During International Student Orientations

    The College of Southern Idaho (CSI) is a community college and is one of the fastest growing educational institutions in the state. The college enrolls, on average between 40 to 60 international students per academic year. CSI and the neighboring Refugee Center contribute to the community’s cultural diversity. There are numerous benefits for both international and domestic students to attending CSI. Those advantages include higher acceptance rates, lower required English proficiency scores, reduced tuition costs, and smaller class sizes. In addition, students are able to transfer to a larger university if they feel compelled to obtain a higher degree. Currently, the International Student Services Office (ISSO) is a one-person office. The ISSO’s goals include developing and coordinating holistic services to enhance the international student experience. Recently, the ISSO was tasked with creating a new, more encompassing international student orientation. Beginning in fall of 2015, the ISSO staff met with the Registrar and Associate Dean of Students to discuss the importance of international student engagement, cultural adjustment, and learning intercultural communication and competency skills. This proposal explores the current model and recommends the need for the complete redesign of the international student orientation at CSI. The proposed full-day orientation will focus more attention on international students’ specific needs, cultural adjustment, and the development of cross-cultural communication skills

    Non relativistic Broad Band wake fields and potential-well distortion

    The study of the interaction between a particle beam and wake fields is usually based on the assumption of ultra relativistic beams. This is not the case, for example, for the Proton Synchrotron Booster(PSB), in which protons cover the energy range. There are some examples in literature which derive nonultra relativistic formulae for the resistive wall impedance. In this paper we have extended the Broad-Band resonator model, allowing the impedance to have poles even in the upper half complex plane, in order to obtain a wake function different from zero for. The Haissinski equation has been numerically solved showing longitudinal bunch shape changes with. In addition some longitudinal bunch profile measurements, taken for two different bunch intensities at the PSB, are shown

    Coherent tune shift and instabilities measurements at the CERN Proton Synchrotron Booster

    To understand one of the contributions to the intensity limitations of the CERN Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) in view of its operation with beams from Linac 4, the impedance of the machine has been characterized. Measurements of tune shift as a function of the intensity have been carried out in order to estimate the low frequency imaginary part of the impedance. Since the PSB is a low energy machine, these measurements have been done at two different energies, so as to enable us to disentangle the effect of the indirect space charge and resistive wall from the contribution of the machine impedance. An estimation of the possible resonant peaks in the impedance spectrum has been made by measuring a fast instability in Ring4

    High Intensity Beams from the CERN PS Booster

    The CERN Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) has been running for more than 30 years. Originally designed to accelerate particles from 50 to 800 MeV, later upgradedto an energy of 1 GeV and finally 1.4 GeV, it is steadily being pushed to its operational limits. One challenge is the permanent demand for intensity increase, in particular for CNGS and ISOLDE, but also in view of Linac4. As it is an accelerator working with very high space charge during the low energy part of its cycle, its operational conditions have to be precisely tuned. Amongst other things resonances must be avoided, stop band crossings optimised and the machine impedance minimised. Recently, an operational intensity record was achieved with >4.25×1013 protons accelerated. An orbit correction campaign performed during the 2007/2008 shutdown was a major contributing factor to achieving this intensity. As the PSB presently has very few orbit correctors available,the orbit correction has to be achieved by displacing and/or tilting some of the defocusing quadrupoles common to all 4 PSB rings.     Migration, communities-on-the-move and international innovation networks: An empirical analysis of Spanish regions

    This paper investigates the impact of migration on innovation networks between regions and foreign countries. We posit that immigrants (emigrants) act as a transnational knowledge bridge between the host (home) regions and their origin (destination) countries, thus facilitating their co-inventorship networks. We also argue that the social capital of both the hosting and the moving communities reinforces such a bridging role, along with language commonality and migrants’ human capital. Focusing on Spain, as a country that hosted an intense process of migration over the past two decades, we combine patent data with national data on residents and electors abroad and we apply a gravity model to the co-inventorship between Spanish provinces (NUTS3 regions) and a number of foreign countries. Both immigrants and emigrants affect the kind of innovation networking at stake. The social capital of both the moving and the hosting communities actually moderate this impact in a positive way. The effect of migration is stronger for more skilled migrants and with respect to non-Spanish speaking countries, pointing to a language-bridging role of migrants. Policy implications are drawn accordingly

    Mapping Patent Classifications: Portfolio and Statistical Analysis, and the Comparison of Strengths and Weaknesses

    The Cooperative Patent Classifications (CPC) jointly developed by the European and US Patent Offices provide a new basis for mapping and portfolio analysis. This update provides an occasion for rethinking the parameter choices. The new maps are significantly different from previous ones, although this may not always be obvious on visual inspection. Since these maps are statistical constructs based on index terms, their quality--as different from utility--can only be controlled discursively. We provide nested maps online and a routine for portfolio overlays and further statistical analysis.     Looking inside the spiky bits : a critical review and conceptualisation of entrepreneurial ecosystems

    The authors wish to thank the Organisational for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) for funding their original research on entrepreneurial ecosystems.The concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems has quickly established itself as one of the latest ‘fads’ in entrepreneurship research. At face value, this kind of systemic approach to entrepreneurship offers a new and distinctive path for scholars and policy makers to help understand and foster growth-oriented entrepreneurship. However, its lack of specification and conceptual limitations has undoubtedly hindered our understanding of these complex organisms. Indeed, the rapid adoption of the concept has tended to overlook the heterogeneous nature of ecosystems. This paper provides a critical review and conceptualisation of the ecosystems concept: it unpacks the dynamics of the concept; outlines its theoretical limitations; measurement approaches and use in policy-making. It sets out a preliminary taxonomy of different archetypal ecosystems. The paper concludes that entrepreneurial ecosystems are a highly variegated, multi-actor and multi-scalar phenomenon, requiring bespoke policy interventions.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
