The nearby Galaxy structure toward the Vela Gum nebula
We report on photometry and spectroscopy for MK classification
purposes carried out in the fields of five open clusters projected against the
Vela Gum in the Third Galactic Quadrant of the Galaxy. They are Ruprecht 20,
Ruprecht 47, Ruprecht 60, NGC 2660 and NGC 2910. We could improve/confirm the
parameters of these objects derived before. The spectroscopic parallax method
has been applied to several stars located in the fields of four out of the five
clusters to get their distances and reddenings. With this method we found two
blue stars in the field of NGC 2910 at distances that make them likely members
of Vela OB1 too. Also, projected against the fields of Ruprecht 20 and Ruprecht
47 we have detected other young stars favoring not only the existence of Puppis
OB1 and OB2 but conforming a young stellar group at kpc from the Sun
and extending for more than 6 kpc outward the Galaxy. If this is the case,
there is a thickening of the thin Galactic disk of more than 300 pc at just 2-3
kpc from the Sun. Ruprecht 60 and NGC 2660 are too old objects that have no
physical relation with the associations under discussion. An astonishing result
has been the detection in the background of Ruprecht 47 of a young star at the
impressive distance of 9.5 kpc from the Sun that could be a member of the
innermost part of the Outer Arm. Another far young star in the field of NGC
2660, at near 6.0 kpc, may become a probable member of the Perseus Arm or of
the inner part of the Local Arm. The distribution of young clusters and stars
onto the Third Galactic Quadrant agrees with recent findings concerning the
extension of the Local Arm as revealed by parallaxes of regions of star
formation. We show evidences too that added to previous ones found by our group
explain the thickening of the thin disk as a combination of flare and warp.Comment: Accepted for publication in New Astronom

Los docentes de química a nivel universitario usamos «problemas», habitualmente de tipo cuantitativo, para enseñar y para evaluar. En este trabajo ponemos en duda de que lo hagamos en forma eficaz. Se muestra, a partir de pruebas diagnósticas de pares de problemas (uno cuantitativo y otro cualitativo similar), que muchos estudiantes pueden resolver los problemas cuantitativos sin una adecuada comprensión conceptual.Chemistry professors at university level make use of «problems», usually of a quantitative type, to teach and evaluate. In this article we question the fact of whether they do it in an efficient way. From diagnostic test of pairs of problems (a quantitative and a similar qualitative one) it is shown that many students can solve quantitative problems without an appropriate conceptual comprehension
The edge of the young Galactic disc
In this work we report and discuss the detection of two distant diffuse
stellar groups in the third Galactic quadrant. They are composed of young
stars, with spectral types ranging from late O to late B, and lie at
galactocentric distances between 15 and 20 kpc. These groups are located in the
area of two cataloged open clusters (VdB-Hagen~04 and Ruprecht~30), projected
towards the Vela-Puppis constellations, and within the core of the Canis Major
over-density. Their reddening and distance has been estimated analyzing their
color-color and color-magnitude diagrams, derived from deep photometry.
The existence of young star aggregates at such extreme distances from the
Galactic center challenges the commonly accepted scenario in which the Galactic
disc has a sharp cut-off at about 14 kpc from the Galactic center, and
indicates that it extends to much greater distances (as also supported by
recent detection of CO molecular complexes well beyond this distance). While
the groups we find in the area of Ruprecht~30 are compatible with the Orion and
Norma-Cygnus spiral arms, respectively, the distant group we identify in the
region of VdB-Hagen~4 lies in the external regions of the Norma-Cygnus arm, at
a galactocentric distance (20 kpc) where no young stars had been detected

Die kondyläre Metastasierung: Literaturrecherche und ein Fallbericht
Zusammenfassung: Hintergrund: Kondyläre Metastasen sind eine Rarität. In der Literaturrecherche entsprachen nur 23 der insgesamt 69 gefundenen Fälle den Kriterien von Meyer u. Shklar. Fallbericht: Bei einem 48-jährigen Mann mit Schmerzen im linken Kiefergelenk wurde im linken Kondylus eine solitäre Metastase eines kurz zuvor operierten Lungenkarzinoms gefunden. Aufgrund der ausgedehnten Umgebungsinfiltration erfolgte eine kurative Radiatio. Im Verlauf traten weitere Skelettmetastasen auf. Diskussion: Kieferköpfchenmetastasen unterscheiden sich bezüglich ihres Verlaufs kaum von den Metastasen des extraartikulären Kieferbereiches. Unter den metastasierenden Tumoren rangiert das Mammakarzinom als Primärtumor an erster Stelle, gefolgt vom Lungenkarzinom. Klinisch und radiologisch können keine spezifischen Parameter für eine Diagnosestellung angegeben werden. Bei der Differenzialdiagnostik der Gelenkserkrankungen sollte jedoch insbesondere bei Patienten mit bekannten Primärtumoren und Gelenksbeschwerden sowie radiologischen Auffälligkeiten eine mögliche Metastasierung berücksichtigt werden. Die Diagnose sollte für eine entsprechende Therapieplanung histologisch gesichert werden. Das therapeutische Vorgehen ist in der Regel palliativ, da die Grunderkrankung bei Diagnosestellung einer Kieferköpfchenmetastase zumeist weit fortgeschritten is
Hypoglycemia in response to glucose and glucagon in insulinoma patients with a negative prolonged fast: Functional and morphological properties
A negative 72-h fast is usually considered to preclude the diagnosis of insulinoma. The aim of this study was to describe the functional and morphological properties of two exceptional patients with an insulinoma who had exhibited pre-operatively a negative 72-h fast. Despite the ability of tumor cells to turn off insulin secretion in response to low plasma glucose during 72 h of fasting, hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia occurred in both patients in response to stimulation by classical secretagogues. Pre-operatively, both patients underwent oral and iv glucose challenge tests and iv glucagon stimulation test. Insulin secretion was rapidly stimulated by these secretagogues to an exaggerated extent and thereby caused hypoglycemia due to an insulin mass effect. In contrast to the common functional features during suppression and stimulation tests, the tumors differed widely with regard to insulin and proinsulin response to calcium during ASVS tests and morphological properties. In patient 1, the immunohistochemical proinsulin distribution pattern resembled that of normal γ-cells, i.e. the staining was restricted to the perinuclear area; insulin and proinsulin were not stimulated by calcium during the ASVS test. In patient 2, the proinsulin staining pattern was abnormal, i.e. proinsulin was also found in the periphery of tumor cells; insulin and proinsulin were stimulated by calcium. We conclude that normal or exaggerated rather than defective glucose sensing may explain hypoglycemia in these exceptional insulinoma patients.
