    EVALUATING A MARKERLESS METHOD FOR STUDYING ARTICULATORY MOVEMENTS: APPLICATION TO A SYLLABLE REPETITION TASK

    none4siThe analysis of the articulatory movements allows investigating the kinematic characteristics of some speech disorders. However, the methodologies most used until now, as electromagnetic articulography and optoelectronic systems, are expensive and intrusive which limit their use to specialized laboratories. In this work, we use a completely markerless and low-cost technique to study lip movements during a syllable repetition task. By means of a Kinect-like and an existing face tracking algorithm, we are able to track the movements of the lower lip, testing the performances against a reference method (marker-based optoelectronic system). Good results were obtained in terms of RMSE for the tracking of the lower lip during the repetitions. Some kinematic measures, as opening and closing velocities and accelerations, were also computed.     Stuttering Detection Using Speaker Representations and Self-supervised Contextual Embeddings

    The adoption of advanced deep learning architectures in stuttering detection (SD) tasks is challenging due to the limited size of the available datasets. To this end, this work introduces the application of speech embeddings extracted from pre-trained deep learning models trained on large audio datasets for different tasks. In particular, we explore audio representations obtained using emphasized channel attention, propagation, and aggregation time delay neural network (ECAPA-TDNN) and Wav2Vec2.0 models trained on VoxCeleb and LibriSpeech datasets respectively. After extracting the embeddings, we benchmark with several traditional classifiers, such as the K-nearest neighbour (KNN), Gaussian naive Bayes, and neural network, for the SD tasks. In comparison to the standard SD systems trained only on the limited SEP-28k dataset, we obtain a relative improvement of 12.08%, 28.71%, 37.9% in terms of unweighted average recall (UAR) over the baselines. Finally, we have shown that combining two embeddings and concatenating multiple layers of Wav2Vec2.0 can further improve the UAR by up to 2.60% and 6.32% respectively.Comment: Accepted in International Journal of Speech Technology, Springer 2023 substantial overlap with arXiv:2204.0156

    La maladie de Forestier ou hyperostose ankylosante vertébrale engainante est un désordre musculo-squelettique non inflammatoire responsable d\'une ossification ligamentaire essentiellement du ligament longitudinal antérieur. Elle touche de préférence l\'homme de plus de 50 ans. La dysphagie est un symptôme rarement observé dans l\'évolution de la maladie de Forestier. Nous rapportons deux cas révélés par une dysphagie isolée. Il s\'agit de deux hommes âgés de 50 et 56 ans. Le diagnostic était radiologique. La radiographie standard du rachis a objectivé des ostéophytes du rachis cervical. Le transit oesogastroduodénal a montré une compression modérée de l\'oesophage cervical. Le traitement était médical reposant sur les anti inflammatoires non stéroïdiens et les antalgiques. Le traitement chirurgical est indiqué dans les cas de dysphagie sévère.     Liposarcoma of the extremities: MR imaging features and their correlation with pathologic data

    SummaryObjectiveTo describe the MRI features of liposarcomas of the extremities and correlate them with data from the histologic subtypes.Material and methodsRetrospective study of 20 cases of liposarcoma of the extremities identified on MRI, surgically removed and confirmed at pathology. On MRI examination, T1- and T2-weighted fat-suppressed and non-fat-suppressed images were acquired then gadolinium-enhanced fat-suppressed T1-weighted images were obtained in at least two orthogonal planes.ResultsSixteen female and four male patients aged 12 to 77 years old at presentation, in 16 cases, with a slowly enlarging painless mass (demonstrating no associated local or general inflammatory components), located in the lower extremity (16 cases) and predominantly located in the thigh (13 cases). Pathologic examination revealed three cases of well-differentiated liposarcoma, 12 cases of myxoid liposarcoma one of which with round cells, three cases of pleomorphic liposarcoma, one case of dedifferentiated liposarcoma and one case of mixed-type liposarcoma. MR images mostly showed well-circumscribed tumors (19 cases) . Well-differentiated liposarcomas typically demonstrated a very specific diagnostic appearance as a predominantly adipose mass containing nonlipomatous components seen as thick septa that may show nodularity. Other subtypes of liposarcoma demonstrated a small amount of adipose tissue thus producing a marbled textural pattern on T1-weighted images particularly in myxoid liposarcomas (9 cases), or even nonlipomatous elements in high-grade liposarcomas (in round cell liposarcoma and in two out of three pleomorphic liposarcomas). The myxoid subtype has also a relatively characteristic appearance as a low signal intensity noted on T1-weighted images and a marked high signal intensity on T2. The dedifferentiated liposarcoma has a very specific radiologic appearance as a nonlipomatous component within a predominantly adipose mass, simulating that of well-differentiated liposarcomas.ConclusionMRI of extremity liposarcomas is a highly reliable and sensitive method to characterize liposarcomas. Besides its value in the diagnosis of liposarcoma and locoregional extension control, it allows proper identification of the specific histologic subtypes of liposarcoma.Level of evidenceLevel IV.     Is markerless acquisition of speech production accurate ?

    International audienceIn this study, the precision of markerless acquisition techniques have been assessed when used to acquire articulatory data for speech production studies. Two different markerless systems have been evaluated and compared to a marker-based one. The main finding is that both markerless systems provide reasonable result during normal speech and the quality is uneven during fast articulated speech. The quality of the data is dependent on the temporal resolution of the markerless system

    Study of Leishmania pathogenesis in mice : experimental considerations

    Although leishmaniases are endemic in 98 countries, they are still considered neglected tropical diseases. Leishmaniases are characterized by the emergence of new virulent and asymptomatic strains of Leishmania spp. and, as a consequence, by a very diverse clinical spectrum. To fight more efficiently these parasites, the mechanisms of host defense and of parasite virulence need to be thoroughly investigated. To this aim, animal models are widely used. However, the results obtained with these models are influenced by several experimental parameters, such as the mouse genetic background, parasite genotype, inoculation route/infection site, parasite dose and phlebotome saliva. In this review, we propose an update on their influence in the two main clinical forms of the disease: cutaneous and visceral leishmaniases

    In Vitro Evaluation of a Soluble Leishmania Promastigote Surface Antigen as a Potential Vaccine Candidate against Human Leishmaniasis

    International audiencePSA (Promastigote Surface Antigen) belongs to a family of membrane-bound and secreted proteins present in severalLeishmania (L.) species. PSA is recognized by human Th1 cells and provides a high degree of protection in vaccinated mice.We evaluated humoral and cellular immune responses induced by a L. amazonensis PSA protein (LaPSA-38S) produced in aL. tarentolae expression system. This was done in individuals cured of cutaneous leishmaniasis due to L. major (CCLm) or L.braziliensis (CCLb) or visceral leishmaniasis due to L. donovani (CVLd) and in healthy individuals. Healthy individuals weresubdivided into immune (HHR-Lm and HHR-Li: Healthy High Responders living in an endemic area for L. major or L. infantuminfection) or non immune/naive individuals (HLR: Healthy Low Responders), depending on whether they produce high orlow levels of IFN-c in response to Leishmania soluble antigen. Low levels of total IgG antibodies to LaPSA-38S were detectedin sera from the studied groups. Interestingly, LaPSA-38S induced specific and significant levels of IFN-c, granzyme B and IL-10 in CCLm, HHR-Lm and HHR-Li groups, with HHR-Li group producing TNF-a in more. No significant cytokine response wasobserved in individuals immune to L. braziliensis or L. donovani infection. Phenotypic analysis showed a significant increasein CD4+ T cells producing IFN-c after LaPSA-38S stimulation, in CCLm. A high positive correlation was observed between thepercentage of IFN-c-producing CD4+ T cells and the released IFN-c. We showed that the LaPSA-38S protein was able toinduce a mixed Th1 and Th2/Treg cytokine response in individuals with immunity to L. major or L. infantum infectionindicating that it may be exploited as a vaccine candidate.
