    Article Operational Ship Monitoring System Based on Synthetic Aperture Radar Processing

    Abstract: This paper presents a Ship Monitoring System (SIMONS) working with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. It is able to infer ship detection and classification information, and merge the results with other input channels, such as polls from the Automatic Identification System (AIS). Two main stages can be identified, namely: SAR processing and data dissemination. The former has three independent modules, which are related to Coastline Detection (CD), Ship Detection (SD) and Ship Classification (SC). The later is solved via an advanced web interface, which is compliant with the OpenSource standards fixed by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). SIMONS has been designed to be a modular, unsupervised and reliable system that meets Near-Real Time (NRT) delivery requirements. From data ingestion to product delivery, the processing chain is fully automatic accepting ERS and ENVISAT formats. SIMONS has been developed by GMV Aerospace, S.A. with three main goals, namely: 1) To limit the dependence on the ancillary information provided by systems such as AIS. 2) To achieve the maximum level of automatism and restrict human manipulation. 3) To limit the error sources and their propagation

    The lightest Higgs boson production at photon colliders in the 2HDM-III

    The branching ratios of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson h0h^0, in the framework of the General Two Higgs Doublet Model are calculated. Different scenarios are presented taking into account constraints obtained in previous works on the flavor changing neutral currents factors. Plausible scenarios with flavour changing processes at tree level like bsˉb \bar s and tcˉt \bar c are analyzed for relevant region of parameters. The loop-induced Higgs couplings to photon pairs can be tested with a photon collider. The number of events of h0h^0 as a resonance in photon colliders are calculated taking into account its corresponding background signal in TESLA, CLIC and NLC.Comment: 1.     A novel treatment of denuded areas in newborns: A report of 2 successful cases

    Covering denuded areas in the extremes of life is challenging for the plastic surgeon. In newborns, this becomes a greater challenge because of the immaturity of all of their systems, making any injury a potential risk for death. We present in this case report a successful treatment of 2 cases covered with cultured autologous keratinocytes. In this procedure, a small skin biopsy is taken from the retroauricular area and the keratinocytes are cultured. After 5 days, a membrane with the cells cultured is applied covering the denuded area. We find the autologous keratinocyte method a suitable option for the treatment of denuded areas in newborns, without causing any additional morbidity and in a very short period of time.     PV Hosting Capacity Analysis and Enhancement Using High Resolution Stochastic Modeling

    Reduction of CO2 emissions is a main target in the future smart grid. This goal is boosting the installation of renewable energy resources (RES), as well as a major consumer engagement that seeks for a more efficient utilization of these resources toward the figure of ‘prosumers’. Nevertheless, these resources present an intermittent nature, which requires the presence of an energy storage system and an energy management system (EMS) to ensure an uninterrupted power supply. Moreover, network-related issues might arise due to the increasing power of renewable resources installed in the grid, the storage systems also being capable of contributing to the network stability. However, to assess these future scenarios and test the control strategies, a simulation system is needed. The aim of this paper is to analyze the interaction between residential consumers with high penetration of PV generation and distributed storage and the grid by means of a high temporal resolution simulation scenario based on a stochastic residential load model and PV production records. Results of the model are presented for different PV power rates and storage capacities, as well as a two-level charging strategy as a mechanism for increasing the hosting capacity (HC) of the network

    Corticotrophin-Releasing Factor (CRF) through CRF1 Receptor Facilitates the Expression of Morphine-Related Positive and Aversive Memory in Mice

    Different studies have elucidated the mechanisms underlying the formation and expression of drug-related cue memories; corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) plays a critical role in reward- and aversion-driven associative learning. In the present chapter, we have evaluated whether CP-154,526, a selective CRF1 receptor (CRF1R) antagonist, or genetic deletion of CRF1R (KO mice) have comparable effects on conditioned place preference (CPP) and conditioned place aversion (CPA) learning. We also investigated CP-154,526 effects on morphine-induced CPP activation of CRF, CREB phosphorylation, and thioredoxin (Trx1) expression in dentate gyrus (DG), a brain region involved in memory consolidation, and the role of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis in CPA expression and extinction. The CRF1R antagonist abolished the acquisition of morphine CPP, Trx-1 and BDNF increased expression, and pCREB/Trx-1 co-localization in the DG. The increase in adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) plasma levels observed after CPA expression was attenuated in CRF1R KO mice, suggesting a role of HPA axis in aversive memories. Altogether, these results suggest a critical role of CRF, through CRF1R, in molecular changes involved in memory formation and consolidation and may facilitate the development of effective treatments for opioid addiction

    Secondary Control for Storage Power Converters in Isolated Nanogrids to Allow Peer-to-Peer Power Sharing

    It is usual in literature that power sharing among grid-forming sources of an isolated microgrid obeys their energy rating, instead of economic agreements between stakeholders, and circulating energy among them is usually avoided. However, these energy interchanges make strong sense and classical power sharing methods must be reformulated in the context of prosumer-based microgrids. This paper proposes a secondary control method for a prosumer-based low-voltage nanogrid that allows for energy interchange between prosumers, where storage systems, together with PV generators, are the controllable grid-forming sources. A power flow technique adapted to islanded microgrids is used for secondary control algorithm and the whole hierarchical control strategy for the prosumer converter is simulated and validated. This hierarchical control consists of three stages: tertiary control plans the energy interchange among prosumers, secondary obtains different voltage and power setpoints for each of the grid-forming sources, and, finally, primary control guarantees stable voltage and frequency values within the nanogrid with droop rules. Inner control loops for the power converter are also defined to track setpoints and assure stable performance. Simulation tests are carried out, which prove the stability of the proposed methods and the accuracy of the setpoint tracking

    How does the beach ecosystem change without tourists during COVID-19 lockdown?

    Urban tourist beach ecosystems provide the essential service of recreation. These ecosystems also support critical ecological functions where biodiversity conservation is not usually a priority. The sudden lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic created a unique opportunity to evaluate the effects of human absence in these urban-coastal ecosystems. This study examined bioindicators from 29 urban tourist beaches in seven Latin-American countries and assesses their response to lockdown about some relevant anthropogenic stressors such as pollution, noise, human activities, and user density. The presence of animals and plants, as well as the intensity of stressors, were assessed through a standardized protocol during lockdown conditions. Additionally, the environmental conditions of the beaches before and during lockdown were qualitatively compared using multivariate non-parametric statistics. We found notable positive changes in biological components and a clear decrease in human stressors on almost all the beaches. Dune vegetation increased on most sites. Similarly, high burrow densities of ghost crabs were observed on beaches, except those where cleaning activity persisted. Because of the lockdown, there was an exceptionally low frequency of beach users, which in turn reduced litter, noise and unnatural odors. The observed patterns suggest that tourist beaches can be restored to natural settings relatively quickly. We propose several indicators to measure changes in beaches once lockdown is relaxed.     Randomized clinical trial to compare the traditional teaching method and the simulated-scenario teaching method in the acquisition of skills for the identification of acute respiratory disease signs in paediatric patients

    Introducción. La infección respiratoria aguda es un problema de salud pública en menores de 5 años; la detección e identificación tempranas de sus signos disminuye la mortalidad en este grupo de edad y es una meta de la formación médica. Objetivo. Comparar en estudiantes de medicina el método educativo tradicional y el escenario simulado para el reconocimiento de signos de enfermedad respiratoria aguda en niños de 2 meses a 5 años. Sujetos y métodos. Se realizó un ensayo clínico para estudiantes de medicina, aleatorizados en dos grupos: A (clase teórica y ayudas audiovisuales) y B (escenario simulado). El desenlace primario fue el desempeño en la evaluación global. Se realizó prueba de Mann-Withney Wilcoxon para comparación entre grupos y Mann-Withney Wilcoxon pareada para análisis intragrupo (antes y después de la intervención). Resultados. Mediante prueba de Mann-Withney Wilcoxon pareada intragrupo pre y postintervención, el grupo A mostró mejor un desarrollo de competencias en el desenlace primario (p = 0,02) y en la evaluación global del escenario simulado (p = 0,04). El grupo B logró cambios significativos en el desenlace primario (p = 0,00), la anamnesis (p = 0,00) y la evaluación global del escenario simulado (p = 0,00). En la evaluación postintervención no se encontraron diferencias significativas en el desenlace primario ni secundario. Conclusiones. La comparación postintervención entre los grupos A y B no mostró diferencias significativas en ninguna de las variables estudiadas entre ambos grupos.Artículo original269-274Paciente pediátricoIntroduction. The acute respiratory infection is a public health problem in children under 5 years of age. The early detection and identification of its signs reduces the mortality rates in these age groups and is an objective in medical education. Aim. To compare the traditional teaching method with the simulated-scenario teaching method in the acquisition of skills necessary to recognize respiratory distress in children between 2 months and 5 years of age by medical students. Subjects and methods. A clinical trial was done for medical students and they were divided into two randomized groups: group A which used the traditional teaching method and group B, which used the simulated-scenario method. The primary outcomes were seen in the global evaluation performances. A Mann-Withney Wilcoxon test was used for the comparison among groups and a paired Mann-Withney Wilcoxon test was used for the intra-group analysis (before and after the intervention). Results. When using the paired Mann-Withney Wilcoxon intragroup test pre and post intervention, group A showed a better skill development in the primary outcome (p = 0.02) and the global evaluation in simulated scenario (p = 0.04). On the other hand, group B reached significant changes on the primary outcomes (p = 0.00), anamnesis (p = 0.00) and global evaluation with the simulated-scenario method (p = 0.00). It was observed that in the post-intervention evaluation there weren’t any significant differences between the primary and secondary outcomes. Conclusions. The post-intervention comparison between groups A and B didn’t show significant differences in the studied variables between both groups
