Highly separated transonic flows
Attention is given to the wind tunnel, to photographic visualization of the flow, and to measurements by pressure probes, hot wire anemometry and laser anemometry. The simultaneous use of different means of measurement provided a good description of the phenomenon, and indicated the existence of shocks and their stability, as well as the existence of the bubble, its dimensions, and in particular, the reattachment of its front. The results show that the bursting (or transition) of the bubble front is produced at an unstable position and creates a point of turbulent intensity which diffuses over the entire height of the flow
Anomalous Roughening of Viscous Fluid Fronts in Spontaneous Imbibition
We report experiments on spontaneous imbibition of a viscous fluid by a model
porous medium in the absence of gravity. The average position of the interface
satisfies Washburn's law. Scaling of the interface fluctuations provides a
dynamic exponent z \simeq 3, indicative of global dynamics driven by capillary
forces. The complete set of exponents clearly shows that interfaces are not
self-affine, exhibiting distinct local and global scaling, both for time
(b=0.64\pm 0.02, b* =0.33 \pm 0.03) and space (a=1.94 \pm 0.20, a_loc=0.94 \pm
0.10). These values are compatible with an intrinsic anomalous scaling
scenario.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Nutrition in Early Childcare Programs: The Benefits and Barriers
Introduction:
1 in 5 Vermont children experience food insecurity. Inadequate nutrition threatens cognitive, social, and emotional development in the first years of life.
49.1% of Vermont children arrive at kindergarten underprepared. It has been shown that undernourished children have reduced activity levels and withdraw from their environment, removing them from critical learning opportunities and social interactions.
Supporting the provision of healthy food in early childcare programs may help address the issue of food insecurity and promote healthy childhood development.
Currently, there are no existing data on both Vermont childcare providers and parents of these children on their perceptions of the importance of providing food in early childcare programs as well as the associated benefits and barriers to do so.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1228/thumbnail.jp
International media and economic policy: A comparative media analysis of 2002 U.S. steel tariffs [abstract]
Abstract only availableThis paper compares American and European media coverage of the U.S. Emergency Safeguard Measures for steel which were imposed from March 2002-Dec. 2003 and levied tariffs of up to 30% on some steel imports. Of European Union members, the United Kingdom and France were among the most heavily affected by the tariffs. Mainstream newspapers in those countries presented mainly negative information and opinions of the U.S. policy. There were no significant differences between British and French coverage of this issue. In comparison, U.S. sources were predominantly neutral. However, headlines and prominent articles in all countries often reflected negative attitudes, and the most opinionated language came from journalists themselves, not outside sources, giving quantitative support to theories of chronic press negativity

Dual equilibrium in a finite aspect ratio tokamak
A new approach to high pressure magnetically-confined plasmas is necessary to
design efficient fusion devices. This paper presents an equilibrium combining
two solutions of the Grad-Shafranov equation, which describes the
magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium in toroidal geometry. The outer equilibrium is
paramagnetic and confines the inner equilibrium, whose strong diamagnetism
permits to balance large pressure gradients. The existence of both equilibria
in the same volume yields a dual equilibrium structure. Their combination also
improves free-boundary mode stability
