Many sections of Dschang town do not have pipe-borne water. For domestic purposes, about 25% of households cover distances of between 500 and 1000 meters to fetch water. The aim of this study is to see the possibility to bring the spring water closer to consumers. Analysis of the water is necessary before such a venture. The physicochemical analysis of spring waters consumed revealed their softness, their low level of mineralization and their aggressive character. Previous study indicated that Escherichia coli was present in those springs with variations from one spring to another. Considering the physicochemical and biological aspects of springs, the study proposed that the water be treated with calcium carbonate in order to improve upon the total hardness, total alkalinity and to bring water to the calco-carbonic equilibrium. To disinfect the water, calcium hypochlorite was recommended as well as polyvinyl chloride for the mini distribution network. Keywords: Langelier Index, calcium carbonate softness, remineralization, calco-carbonic equilibrium, network. International Journal of Biological and Chemical Sciences Vol. 2 (2) 2008: pp. 146-15

Aim of this research is to provide a general situation of cattle slaughtered in Cameroon, as a representative example for the Central African Sub-region. The quality and safety of beef from the abattoir of Yaoundé, the largest in Cameroon, were considered. From January 2009 to March 2012, the pre-slaughter conditions and characteristics of 1953 cattle carcasses were recorded, as well as the pH of m. longissimus thoracis 24 h after slaughter. From these carcasses, 60 were selected to represent the bulls slaughtered. The quality parameters and composition of m. longissimus thoracis were carried out. The origin of most of the cattle was the Guinea High Savannah (74.6%), and transhumance was the common production system (75.5%). Gudali (45.6%), White Fulani (33.3%) and Red Mbororo (20.3%) breeds were predominant. Carcass weight was affected by rearing system and cattle category, and it markedly varied during year. Considering meat quality, the fat content was low (1.2%) and similar between breeds, moreover Gudali showed the toughest meat. Of the cows slaughtered, 27% were pregnant and the most common abnormal conditions encountered were ectoparasites, fatigue, lameness, fungal-like skin lesions, enlarged lymph nodes, respiratory distress, nodular lesions. More than 20% of the carcasses had some organs condemned, mainly for liver flukes (5.17%), and 1.0% of them were completely condemned due to tuberculosis, that also affected 3.28% of lungs. These data could aid authorities draw up programmes with the aim to strengthen cattle production, improve beef supply, control and prevent the observed diseases, and promote the regional trade

EFFECTS OF MILK PRESERVATION USING THE LACTOPEROXIDASE SYSTEM ON PROCESSED YOGURT AND CHEESE QUALITY

ABSTRACT The lactoperoxidase system (LP-system) is an acceptable chemical method for raw milk preservation, especially in rural areas where refrigeration facilities are absent to farmers. Milk production in most African countries is dominated by small-scale traditional production systems using low yielding local breeds. Therefore, processors who operate in such situations must rely on small volumes of milk from many farmers. Application of the LP-system prolongs the shelf life of raw milk and also encourages grouping of farmers hence facilitating milk collection by processors. The application of the LP-system is a recent preservation method for milk in Cameroon whose efficiency has been proven. Therefore, need arose for further studies on the influence of this method on milk processing as well as the quality dairy products. The LP-system was activated by adding 10 ppm sodium thiocyanate and 8.5 ppm sodium percarbonate to fresh milk. Yoghurt and Bambui cheese were processed separately from treated and untreated (control) milk samples. Yogurt was produced from both the treated and the control milk samples at 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% (v/v) culture levels. Yogurt samples were analysed for acidity, protein content and dry matter content while cheese was analysed for butterfat and moisture content. Statistical tests were conducted by Analysis of Variance using the Fisher's test. Simple organoleptic assessments were conducted to compare yogurt and cheese from the treated and the control milk. Activation of the LP-system delayed lactic acid formation in yogurt during incubation and storage leading to increased energy consumption during processing and an improved keeping quality during storage. LPsystem treatment reduced the overall organoleptic quality of yogurt while it improved on that of Bambui cheese. Dry matter content and fat content of yogurt were not significantly affected by LP-system treatment (P<0.05). LP-system treatment did not also affect the moisture and fat content of cheese but slightly improved on its yield

Impedance technology reveals correlations between cytotoxicity and lipophilicity of mono and bimetallic phosphine complexes

Label free impedance technology enables the monitoring of cell response patterns post treatment with drugs or other chemicals. Using this technology, a correlation between the lipophilicity of metal complexes and the degree of cytotoxicity was observed. Au(L1)Cl (1), AuPd(L1)(SC4H8)Cl3 (1a) and Au(L2)Cl (2) [L1 = diphenylphosphino-2-pyridine; L2 = 2-(2-(diphenylphosphino)ethyl)-pyridine] were synthesised, in silico drug-likeness and structure– activity relationship monitored using impedance technology. Dose dependent changes in cytotoxicity were observed for the metal complexes resulting in IC50s of 12.5 ± 2.5, 18.3 ± 8.3 and 16.9 ± 0.5 lM for 1, 1a and 2 respectively in an endpoint assay. When a real time impedance assay was used, dose-dependent responses depicting patterns that suggested slower uptake (at a toxic 20 lM) and faster recovery of the cells (at the less toxic 10 lM) of the bimetallic complex (1a) compared to the monometallic complexes (1 and 2) was observed. These data agreed with the ADMET findings of lower aqueous solubility of 1a and non-ideal lipophilicity (AlogP98 of 6.55) over more water soluble 1 and 2 with ideal lipophilicity (4.91 and 5.03 respectively) values. The additional coordination of a Pd atom to the nitrogen atom of a pyridine ring, the sulfur atom of a tetrahydrothiophene moiety and two chlorine atoms in 1a could be contributing to the observed differences when compared to the monometallic complexes. This report presents impedance technology as a means of correlating drug-likeness of lipophilic phosphine complexes containing similar backbone structures and could prove valuable in filtering drug-like compounds in a drug discovery project.Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), the University of Pretoria.Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) formerly Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS) and University of Johannesburg.http://link.springer.com/journal/105342016-08-31hb201

Objective: In this study, the effects of Amprolin-300 ws, an anticoccidiostat abundantly used in veterinary medicine, on some growth and reproductive parameters in male rabbits were investigated. Methodology and results: Twenty four (24) rabbits aged 5 months and weighing between 2.01 and 2.78 kg were divided into 4 comparable groups of six rabbits each and treated for 60 days with different doses of Amprolin-300 ws from drinking water: 0, 30, 60 and 110 g/kg of body weight. The results showed that water consumption was significantly (p<0.05) decreased in rabbits treated with 60 and 110 mg/kg of body weight of Amprolin-300 compared to control rabbits. Body weight gain and average daily gain decreased significantly (p<0.05) in animals treated with 30 and 60 mg/kg of body weight compared to control rabbits. On the other hand, feed efficiency decreased significantly (p<0.05) in control animals and those who ingested the highest dose (110 mg/kg of body weight) compared to rabbits treated with 30 and 60 mg/kg of body weight respectively. The pH of semen increased significantly (p<0.05) in animals treated with 30 and 60 mg/kg of body weight compared to control animals. Individual motility and sperm concentration decreased significantly (p<0.05) in rabbits who received the highest dose of Amprolin-300 compared to control rabbits. Conclusion and application of results: Thus, at the dose of 110 mg/kg body weight, Amprolinws-300 reduced in male rabbit, food consumption, body and average daily weight gain, specific weight and pH of semen. It inhibited spermatogenesis and reduced sperm mobility. Therefore its use should be regulated

Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness predicts CSF amyloid/tau before cognitive decline

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology precedes symptoms and its detection can identify at-risk individuals who may benefit from early treatment. Since the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is depleted in established AD, we tested whether its thickness can predict whether cognitively healthy (CH) individuals have a normal or pathological cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) A f42 (A) and tau (T) ratio. Methods: As part of an ongoing longitudinal study, we enrolled CH individuals, excluding those with cognitive impairment and significant ocular pathology. We classified the CH group into two sub-groups, normal (CH-NAT, n = 16) or pathological (CH-PAT, n = 27), using a logistic regression model from the CSF AT ratio that identified >85% of patients with a clinically probable AD diagnosis. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) was acquired for RNFL, ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL), and macular thickness. Group differences were tested using mixed model repeated measures and a classification model derived using multiple logistic regression. Results: Mean age (\ub1 standard deviation) in the CH-PAT group (n = 27; 75.2 \ub1 8.4 years) was similar (p = 0.50) to the CH-NAT group (n = 16; 74.1 \ub1 7.9 years). Mean RNFL (standard error) was thinner in the CH-PAT group by 9.8 (2.7) \u3bcm; p < 0.001. RNFL thickness classified CH-NAT vs. CH-PAT with 87% sensitivity and 56.3% specificity. Conclusions: Our retinal data predict which individuals have CSF biomarkers of AD pathology before cognitive deficits are detectable with 87% sensitivity. Such results from easy-to-acquire, objective and non-invasive measurements of the RNFL merit further study of OCT technology to monitor or screen for early AD pathology
