Valuation of Forest Resources in Watershed Areas: Selected Applications in Makiling Forest Reserve

    Get PDF
The valuation of resources found in the watershed area is important in assessing the impacts of changes in the watershed. While the change will have positive impacts which are short-term in nature, there are long-term environmental damages associated with economic benefits. This paper gives a rational judgment on the soundness of such changes through cost and benefit analysis. The watershed approach is utilized to capture the effects that are relevant in the analysis.forestry sector, watershed, uplands

The study describes the livelihood resources, practices and values of Aetas in midBaytan, Botolan, Zambales, located in Central Luzon, Philippines. It aimed to provide a basis for an indigenous development program and drew implications on education and community development. Specifically, this study described 1) the characteristics of the residents, 2) livelihood resources and practices, 3) cultural practices and values, and 4) their problems. Participants and key informants were interviewed during fieldworks. Documents were gathered from pertinent offices. Data were analyzed drawing patterns and categories. Participants were 21 to 76 years old, mostly women, married, with elementary education and 2-5 members per household. Livelihoodresources were family-owned or communal. Livelihood practices included enterprise combinations, production and marketing processes. Majority of the participants is into farming, gathering mountain products, and hired labor. Family roles and traditions were well-defined. Prominent values are sharing, trust in God and determination. The g-string and arrows symbolized their practical philosophy and open-mindedness.Low prices for products and inadequate capital resulted to low income that led to poor health, abseentism and early marriage. The study concludes that the Aetas of mid-Baytan possess the needed resources, skills and values to break the cycle of poverty. Family culture keeps their marriage and community peaceful. It is, therefore, recommends that 1) formative IPED emphasize the role of the Aetas in Philippine history and study their way of life; 2) an indigenous development program be drawn encompassing leadership, local governance, livelihood enhancement, gender sensitivity integrating culture and cohesiveness; and, 3) line agencies collaborate for more directional impact. jae. Comparison of the radiographic and functional outcome in pediatric orthopaedic patients with Gartland type II supracondylar fracture treated by operative versus non operative management

Background: The non-operative method of closed reduction and application of long arm posterior splint and the operative method of closed reduction and percutaneous pinning are both putative management for Gartland II supracondylar fracture. The purpose of this study is to compare which method is superior in the management of this type of fracture thru the comparison of the radiographic as well as the functional outcome. Methods: This study includes 51 pediatric patients undergoing supracondylar fracture treatment. The enrolled participants were randomly allocated to one of the two groups to receive either non operative or operative treatment. Radiographic and functional outcome was assessed post treatment. Results: The operative group exhibited significant superiority versus the non operative group as reflected by the results of the post-treatment radiographs utilizing the anterior humeral line while the Baumann’s angle showed no significant difference between the two groups. Moreover, the operative group demonstrated a better Mayo elbow performance score total per follow up, only in the first 3 months but showed no significant difference thereafter. Conclusions: We therefore conclude that non operative and operative management are both effective treatment for Gartland II supracondylar fracture. The operative group showed significant superiority with results of the anterior humeral line falling mostly at the central one-third of the capitellum. The operative group manifested a better Mayo elbow performance score total only during the first 3 months of follow up

How to avoid knee tunnel convergence when performing a combined anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and lateral extraarticular tenodesis utilizing the antero medial window

    Get PDF
The anterolateral structures of the knee have been demonstrated to have a significant impact on reducing rotational instability and the forces applied to the anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL) graft after surgical reconstruction. Combined ACL reconstruction and lateral extraarticular tenodesis are being performed at an increasing number due to its promising outcome in properly indicated patients. However, tunnel convergence in combined ACLR and lateral extraarticular tenodesis can lead to graft damage and possible failure defeating the purpose of this very effective technique. This technical note describes how to avoid knee tunnel convergence when performing a combined ACL reconstruction with lateral extraarticular tenodesis utilizing the “Antero medial window”

Neoliberal governance, sustainable development and local communities in the Barents Region

    Get PDF
There are currently high hopes in the Barents Region for economic growth, higher employment and improved well-being, encouraged by developments in the energy industry, tourism and mining. The article discusses these prospects from the perspective of local communities in five locations in the region, which spans the northernmost counties of Finland, Norway, Sweden and Northwest Russia. The communities studied are remote, relatively small, multicultural, and dependent on natural resources. The salient dynamic illuminated in the research is how ideas of sustainability and neoliberal governance meet in community development. While the two governmentalities often conflict, they sometimes also complement one another, posing a paradox that raises concerns over the social aspect of sustainable development in particular. The article is based on international, multidisciplinary research drawing on interviews as well as statistical and documentary analysis

Efficacy and Tolerability of a Combined Moxifloxacin/Dexamethasone Formulation for Topical Prophylaxis in Phacoemulsification: An Open-Label Single-Arm Clinical Trial

Background. The use of a fixed-combination antibiotic corticosteroid for infection prophylaxis in Asian patients undergoing phacoemulsification has not been reported. Methods. A 15-day, open-label, single-arm trial of 64 patients for phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is described. Patients applied moxifloxacin 0.5%/dexamethasone 0.1% (Vigadexa) eye drops four times daily before and until 15 days after surgery. Anterior chamber (AC) reaction, visual acuity, ocular pain and signs, and intraocular pressure (IOP) were assessed at baseline and on postoperative days 1, 3, 8, and 15. Results. At day 15, 55 (91.7%) patients scored 0 (<5 cells) in AC reaction. No surgery-related infection occurred. Mean best-corrected visual acuity improved 0.5 logMAR from baseline to 0.0 logMAR (P < .0001). Mean IOP remained at 12-13 mm Hg over the 15-day treatment. Only 2 patients (3.1%) reported minimum ocular pain. Two (3.1%) patients were shifted to prednisolone acetate for severe inflammation. At the end of the study period, 8.3% were given fluorometholone for 1 week for AC reaction grade >0. No drug-related adverse event was reported. Conclusion. Following phacoemulsification and IOL implantation, the topical combination moxifloxacin 0.5%/dexamethasone 0.1% was effective in preventing infection and controlling inflammation and was well tolerated

Abstract

Background

Increasing numbers of medical schools are providing videos of lectures to their students. This study sought to analyze utilization of lecture videos by medical students in their basic science courses and to determine if student utilization was associated with performance on exams.

Methods

Streaming videos of lectures (n = 149) to first year and second year medical students (n = 284) were made available through a password-protected server. Server logs were analyzed over a 10-week period for both classes. For each lecture, the logs recorded time and location from which students accessed the file. A survey was administered at the end of the courses to obtain additional information about student use of the videos.

Results

There was a wide disparity in the level of use of lecture videos by medical students with the majority of students accessing the lecture videos sparingly (60% of the students viewed less than 10% of the available videos. The anonymous student survey revealed that students tended to view the videos by themselves from home during weekends and prior to exams. Students who accessed lecture videos more frequently had significantly (p < 0.002) lower exam scores.

Conclusion

We conclude that videos of lectures are used by relatively few medical students and that individual use of videos is associated with the degree to which students are having difficulty with the subject matter.</p
