    A very special EPW sextic and two IHS fourfolds

    We show that the Hilbert scheme of two points on the Vinberg K3K3 surface has a 2:1 map onto a very symmetric EPW sextic YY in P5\mathbb{P}^5. The fourfold YY is singular along 6060 planes, 2020 of which form a complete family of incident planes. This solves a problem of Morin and O'Grady and establishes that 2020 is the maximal cardinality of such a family of planes. Next, we show that this Hilbert scheme is birationally isomorphic to the Kummer type IHS fourfold X0X_0 constructed in [DW]. We find that X0X_0 is also related to the Debarre-Varley abelian fourfold.Comment: 32 page

    Magnetocaloric effect of monovalent K doped manganites Pr0.6Sr0.4−xKxMnO3 (x=0 to 0.2)

    peer reviewedMagnetic and magnetocaloric properties are reported for polycrystalline monovalent potassium doped manganites Pr0.6Sr0.4−xKxMnO3 (x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2) crystallized in orthorhombic structure with Pnma space group. The increasing K content shifts the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition temperature from 310 K for x=0 to 269 K for x=0.2. The magnetic entropy change under magnetic field variation of 2 T is found to be 1.95, 3.09, 2.89, 3.05 and 3.2 J/kgK for x varying from 0 to 0.2, respectively. The highest relative cooling power of 102 J/kg is observed for the undoped sample. The sensitivity of magnetic entropy change to magnetic field is estimated by a local N(T) exponent exhibiting the characteristic temperature variation. Phenomenological universal curves of entropy change and Arrott plots confirm the second order phase transition

    The Space of Stability Conditions on Abelian Threefolds, and on some Calabi-Yau Threefolds

    We describe a connected component of the space of stability conditions on abelian threefolds, and on Calabi-Yau threefolds obtained as (the crepant resolution of) a finite quotient of an abelian threefold. Our proof includes the following essential steps: 1. We simultaneously strengthen a conjecture by the first two authors and Toda, and prove that it follows from a more natural and seemingly weaker statement. This conjecture is a Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality involving the third Chern character of "tilt-stable" two-term complexes on smooth projective threefolds; we extend it from complexes of tilt-slope zero to arbitrary tilt-slope. 2. We show that this stronger conjecture implies the so-called support property of Bridgeland stability conditions, and the existence of an explicit open subset of the space of stability conditions. 3. We prove our conjecture for abelian threefolds, thereby giving reproving and generalizing a result by Maciocia and Piyaratne. Important in our approach is a more systematic understanding on the behaviour of quadratic inequalities for semistable objects under wall-crossing, closely related to the support property.Comment: 45 pages, 1 figure. v2: addressed referee comments.     Isotropic magnetization response of electrodeposited nanocrystalline Ni–W alloy nanowire arrays

    Isotropic magnetization response was demonstrated in electrodeposited nanocrystalline Ni–15 % W alloy nanowire arrays, which can be applied to nanoscale magnetic field sensors. The Ni–W alloy nanowire arrays were electrochemically synthesized on a nanochannel template electrode from an aqueous electrolytic solution. X-ray and electron diffraction patterns revealed that Ni–15 % W alloy deposits were composed of ultrafine crystal grains with a supersaturated solid solution phase. The magnetization of the Ni–15 % W alloy thin films reached saturation at around 2.5 kOe in a perpendicular direction to the film plane, whereas the pure Ni thin films hardly magnetized in the perpendicular direction. On the contrary, Ni–15 % W alloy nanowire arrays were easily magnetized, and reach saturation at around 1.0 kOe, even in a perpendicular direction to the array film plane that corresponds to the long-axis direction of the alloy nanowires

    Tannic Acid Modified Silver Nanoparticles Show Antiviral Activity in Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Infection

    The interaction between silver nanoparticles and herpesviruses is attracting great interest due to their antiviral activity and possibility to use as microbicides for oral and anogenital herpes. In this work, we demonstrate that tannic acid modified silver nanoparticles sized 13 nm, 33 nm and 46 nm are capable of reducing HSV-2 infectivity both in vitro and in vivo. The antiviral activity of tannic acid modified silver nanoparticles was size-related, required direct interaction and blocked virus attachment, penetration and further spread. All tested tannic acid modified silver nanoparticles reduced both infection and inflammatory reaction in the mouse model of HSV-2 infection when used at infection or for a post-infection treatment. Smaller-sized nanoparticles induced production of cytokines and chemokines important for anti-viral response. The corresponding control buffers with tannic acid showed inferior antiviral effects in vitro and were ineffective in blocking in vivo infection.     pH can be used to impact the folding equilibrium of peptides and proteins. This fact is utilized, similarly to temperature jumps, in pH jump experiments employing laser time-resolved spectroscopy to study the function and structural dynamics of these molecules. Here the application of pH jumps in folding experiments was investigated. Experiments with poly-L-glutamic acid alpha-helix formation shown the critical aspects of pH jump experiments and yielded direct information about the folding kinetics monitored with the amide I IR band

    Evaluation of a Stratified National Breast Screening Program in the United Kingdom: An Early Model-Based Cost-Effectiveness Analysis

    OBJECTIVES: To identify the incremental costs and consequences of stratified national breast screening programs (stratified NBSPs) and drivers of relative cost-effectiveness. METHODS: A decision-analytic model (discrete event simulation) was conceptualized to represent four stratified NBSPs (risk 1, risk 2, masking [supplemental screening for women with higher breast density], and masking and risk 1) compared with the current UK NBSP and no screening. The model assumed a lifetime horizon, the health service perspective to identify costs ( pound, 2015), and measured consequences in quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). Multiple data sources were used: systematic reviews of effectiveness and utility, published studies reporting costs, and cohort studies embedded in existing NBSPs. Model parameter uncertainty was assessed using probabilistic sensitivity analysis and one-way sensitivity analysis. RESULTS: The base-case analysis, supported by probabilistic sensitivity analysis, suggested that the risk stratified NBSPs (risk 1 and risk-2) were relatively cost-effective when compared with the current UK NBSP, with incremental cost-effectiveness ratios of pound16,689 per QALY and pound23,924 per QALY, respectively. Stratified NBSP including masking approaches (supplemental screening for women with higher breast density) was not a cost-effective alternative, with incremental cost-effectiveness ratios of pound212,947 per QALY (masking) and pound75,254 per QALY (risk 1 and masking). When compared with no screening, all stratified NBSPs could be considered cost-effective. Key drivers of cost-effectiveness were discount rate, natural history model parameters, mammographic sensitivity, and biopsy rates for recalled cases. A key assumption was that the risk model used in the stratification process was perfectly calibrated to the population. CONCLUSIONS: This early model-based cost-effectiveness analysis provides indicative evidence for decision makers to understand the key drivers of costs and QALYs for exemplar stratified NBSP
