Brascamp-Lieb Inequality and Its Reverse: An Information Theoretic View
We generalize a result by Carlen and Cordero-Erausquin on the equivalence
between the Brascamp-Lieb inequality and the subadditivity of relative entropy
by allowing for random transformations (a broadcast channel). This leads to a
unified perspective on several functional inequalities that have been gaining
popularity in the context of proving impossibility results. We demonstrate that
the information theoretic dual of the Brascamp-Lieb inequality is a convenient
setting for proving properties such as data processing, tensorization,
convexity and Gaussian optimality. Consequences of the latter include an
extension of the Brascamp-Lieb inequality allowing for Gaussian random
transformations, the determination of the multivariate Wyner common information
for Gaussian sources, and a multivariate version of Nelson's hypercontractivity
theorem. Finally we present an information theoretic characterization of a
reverse Brascamp-Lieb inequality involving a random transformation (a multiple

Endocranial Morphology of the Extinct North American Lion (Panthera atrox)
The extinct North American lion (Panthera atrox) is one of the largest felids (Mammalia, Carnivora) to have ever lived, and it is known from a plethora of incredibly well-preserved remains. Despite this abundance of material, there has been little research into its endocranial anatomy. CT scans of a skull of P. atrox from the Pleistocene La Brea Tar pits were used to generate the first virtual endocranium for this species and to elucidate previously unknown details of its brain size and gross structure, cranial nerves, and inner-ear morphology. Results show that its gross brain anatomy is broadly similar to that of other pantherines, although P. atrox displays less cephalic flexure than either extant lions or tigers, instead showing a brain shape that is reminiscent of earlier felids. Despite this unusual reduction in flexure, the estimated absolute brain size for this specimen is one of the largest reported for any felid, living or extinct. Its encephalization quotient (brain size as a fraction of the expected brain mass for a given body mass) is also larger than that of extant lions but similar to that of the other pantherines. The advent of CT scans has allowed nondestructive sampling of anatomy that cannot otherwise be studied in these extinct lions, leading to a more accurate reconstruction of endocranial morphology and its evolution

Als Alternativen wurden eine negative Einkommensteuer, negative Grenzsteuersätze oder Arbeitsverpflichtungen für Transferempfänger vorgeschlagen. Die Arbeit würdigt diese Instrumente analytisch und zeigt, dass negative Grenzsteuersätze oder Arbeitsverpflichtungen nicht die erhofften Wohlfahrtswirkungen haben
Structural and electronic properties of Pb1-xCdxTe and Pb1-xMnxTe ternary alloys
A systematic theoretical study of two PbTe-based ternary alloys, Pb1-xCdxTe
and Pb1-xMnxTe, is reported. First, using ab initio methods we study the
stability of the crystal structure of CdTe - PbTe solid solutions, to predict
the composition for which rock-salt structure of PbTe changes into zinc-blende
structure of CdTe. The dependence of the lattice parameter on Cd (Mn) content x
in the mixed crystals is studied by the same methods. The obtained decrease of
the lattice constant with x agrees with what is observed in both alloys. The
band structures of PbTe-based ternary compounds are calculated within a
tight-binding approach. To describe correctly the constituent materials new
tight-binding parameterizations for PbTe and MnTe bulk crystals as well as a
tight-binding description of rock-salt CdTe are proposed. For both studied
ternary alloys, the calculated band gap in the L point increases with x, in
qualitative agreement with photoluminescence measurements in the infrared. The
results show also that in p-type Pb1-xCdxTe and Pb1-xMnxTe mixed crystals an
enhancement of thermoelectrical power can be expected.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Physical Review
FunTree: a resource for exploring the functional evolution of structurally defined enzyme superfamilies.
FunTree is a new resource that brings together sequence, structure, phylogenetic, chemical and mechanistic information for structurally defined enzyme superfamilies. Gathering together this range of data into a single resource allows the investigation of how novel enzyme functions have evolved within a structurally defined superfamily as well as providing a means to analyse trends across many superfamilies. This is done not only within the context of an enzyme's sequence and structure but also the relationships of their reactions. Developed in tandem with the CATH database, it currently comprises 276 superfamilies covering ~1800 (70%) of sequence assigned enzyme reactions. Central to the resource are phylogenetic trees generated from structurally informed multiple sequence alignments using both domain structural alignments supplemented with domain sequences and whole sequence alignments based on commonality of multi-domain architectures. These trees are decorated with functional annotations such as metabolite similarity as well as annotations from manually curated resources such the catalytic site atlas and MACiE for enzyme mechanisms. Metastability of non-reversible mean-field Potts model with three spins
We examine a non-reversible, mean-field Potts model with three spins on a set
with points. Without an external field, there are three
critical temperatures and five different metastable regimes. The analysis can
be extended by a perturbative argument to the case of small external fields. We
illustrate the case of large external fields with some phenomena which are not
