Metastable Markov chains: from the convergence of the trace to the convergence of the finite-dimensional distributions
We consider continuous-time Markov chains which display a family of wells at
the same depth. We provide sufficient conditions which entail the convergence
of the finite-dimensional distributions of the order parameter to the ones of a
finite state Markov chain. We also show that the state of the process can be
represented as a time-dependent convex combination of metastable states, each
of which is supported on one well
Revealing the Young Starburst in Haro 3 with Radio and Infrared Imaging
The Wolf-Rayet galaxy Haro 3 (Mrk 35, NGC 3353) was observed at the near-IR
and radio wavelengths as part of ongoing program to study the earliest stages
of starbursts. These observations confirm that the current episode of star
formation is dominated by a single region (region A). While there are knots of
recent (~10 Myr) star formation outside of region A, the sources of ionizing
radiation as observed in both radio and Br-gamma observations are almost
exclusively associated with region A. The derived ionizing flux implies a star
formation rate of ~0.6 solar masses per year localized within a radius of ~0.1
kpc. A comparison with observations from HST indicates that one or more of the
star clusters in region A are optically obscured. The star clusters in region A
have ages at least as young as ~5 Myr, and possibly as young as ~0.1 Myr. The
star cluster that appears to be the youngest also exhibits a near-IR excess in
its colors, possibly indicating natal dust in very close proximity to the
ionizing stars. The difference between optical- and radio-determined ionizing
fluxes as well as the near-IR colors indicate an average extinction value of
A_V ~2.5 in region A. The total stellar mass associated with the current
starburst in region A is inferred from both the near-IR and radio observations
to be ~10^6 solar masses. The other main stellar concentrations observed in the
near-IR (Regions B1 and B2) are somewhat older than region A, with ages ~8-10
Myr, and the near-IR observations indicate they have stellar masses of ~8x10^4
and ~2x10^4 solar masses, respectively.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, to appear in AJ August 200
How far away is the next basket of eggs? Spatial memory and perceived cues shape aggregation patterns in a leaf beetle
Gregarious organisms need to handle the trade-off between increasing food competition and the positive effects of group living, and this is particularly important for ovipositing females. We hypothesized that insect females consider how many conspecifics previously visited a host plant. In a no-choice assay, we show that the gregarious blue willow leaf beetle (Phratora vulgatissima) laid the most eggs and the largest clutches on plants where a sequence of few individual females was released, compared to plants where one or many different females were repeatedly released. Therefore, this species is more sensitive to the indirectly perceived number of conspecifics than the directly perceived number of eggs on a plant. We further hypothesized that females adjust their own intra-plant egg clutch distribution to that of conspecifics and discovered a new behavioral component, i.e., the modulation of distances between clutches. Females adjusted these distances in ways indicating the use of spatial memory, because the largest distance increases were observed on plants with their own clutches, compared to plants with clutches from conspecifics. However, adjustment of aggregation level and distance between clutches occurred only on a suitable, and not on an unsuitable, Salix genotype. We conclude that both behaviors should reduce competition between sibling and non-sibling larvae

Traveling dark-bright solitons in a reduced spin-orbit coupled system: application to Bose-Einstein condensates
In the present work, we explore the potential of spin-orbit (SO) coupled
Bose-Einstein condensates to support multi-component solitonic states in the
form of dark-bright (DB) solitons. In the case where Raman linear coupling
between components is absent, we use a multiscale expansion method to reduce
the model to the integrable Mel'nikov system. The soliton solutions of the
latter allow us to reconstruct approximate traveling DB solitons for the
reduced SO coupled system. For small values of the formal perturbation
parameter, the resulting waveforms propagate undistorted, while for large
values thereof, they shed some dispersive radiation, and subsequently distill
into a robust propagating structure. After quantifying the relevant radiation
effect, we also study the dynamics of DB solitons in a parabolic trap,
exploring how their oscillation frequency varies as a function of the bright
component mass and the Raman laser wavenumber
