Measuring banking efficiency in the pre- and post-liberalization environment : evidence from the Turkish banking system

The authors examine banking efficiency before and after liberalization, drawing on Turkey's experience. They also investigate the scale effect on efficiency by type of ownership. Their findings suggest that liberalization programs were followed by an observable decline in efficiency, not an improvement. During the study period Turkish banks did not operate at the optimum scale. Another unexpected result was that efficiency was no different between state-owned and privately owned banks. Banks that were privately owned or foreign owned had been expected to respond better to liberalization, because they were smaller and more dynamically structured, but they were no more efficient than state-owned banks. Financial leverage and the leverage effect: A market and firm analysis

We quantify the effect of financial leverage on stock return volatility in a dynamic general equilibrium economy with debt and equity claims. The effect of financial leverage is studied both at a market and a firm level where the firm is exposed to both idiosyncratic and market risk. In a benchmark economy with both a constant interest rate and constant price of risk, financial leverage generates little variation in stock return volatility at the market level but significant variation at the individual firm level. In an economy that generates time-variation in interest rates and the price of risk, there is significant variation in stock return volatility at the market and firm level. In such an economy, financial leverage has little effect on the dynamics of stock return volatility at the market level. Financial leverage contributes more to the dynamics of stock return volatility for a small firm.

Direct simulation of three-dimensional flow about the AFE vehicle at high altitudes

Three-dimensional hypersonic rarefied flow about the Aeroassist Flight Experiment (AFE) vehicle was studied using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) technique. Results are presented for the transitional flow regime encountered between 120 and 200 km altitudes with a reentry velocity of 9.92 km/s. In the simulations, a five-species reacting real-gas model that accounts for internal energies (rotational and vibrational) is used. The results indicate that the transitional effects are significant even at an altitude of 200 km and influence the overall vehicle aerodynamics. For the cases considered, the aerodynamic coefficients, surface pressures, convective heating, and flow field structure variations with rarefaction effects are presented

The main purpose of this study is to point out the significance of the intellectual capital on firm valuation. For this reason, It is the implementation, to what extent the technology firms traded on the ISE (Istanbul Stock Exchange) attaches importance to the intellectual capital is examined by using the correlation and multiple regression analysis with the help of the Value Added Intellectual Coefficient of Ante Pulic. As a result of this analysis, it is possible to say that most of the firms, including the knowledge based ones in our country, do not attach adequate importance to the intellectual capital

Annesinin kendisi için ayırabildiği paranın bitiminde Galatasaray Lisesi son sınıfından ayrılmaya mecbur kalarak yine yatılı olan İstanbul-Halıcıoğlu'ndaki Askeri Mühendis Mektebine (Mühendishane-i Berri-î Hümayun) geçişini zikretmiş; Askerî Mühendis Mektebi'ndeki öğrenciliğini incelemeye devam edeceğiz.Annesinin rahmetli eşinden kalan kıymetli ziynet eşyalarını satıp paraya çevirerek Galatasaray Lisesi Müdürüne teslimi "Bu çocuğun okulu bitirene kadar kullanılması" isteğini taşıyan annenin bu arzusu, onu ancak Lise son sınıfa kadar getirir ve orada biter. Başka bir olanak yoktur. Anne, kocasından kalan emekli aylığı ile ancak ailenin geçimini sağlamaktadır ve çok üzgündür

"SPOR - BİLİM" Dergisinin Ocak-Şubat-Mart1990 tarihli birinci sayısında "Türkiye'de Beden Eğitimi Öğretmeni Yetiştirme Çalışmaları ve Aşamaları" başlığı altında, yurdumuzda bu işin öncüsü olan Rahmetli Selim Sırrı TARCAN'ın, özgeçmişinden kısaca bahsetmiş; özel hayatının, yetişmesinin detaylarını daha sonraya bırakarak bu konudaki teşebbüs, gayret, atılım ve hizmetleriyle başarılarını anlatmaya çalışmıştık
