Development of concepts for a zero-fossil-energy greenhouse
Dutch government and greenhouse horticultural practice aim for strongly reduced fossil energy use and of environmental loads in 2010 and energy neutral greenhouses in 2020. This research aims to design a greenhouse concept with minimal use of fossil energy and independent of nearby greenhouses. The concept is called the zero-fossil-energy-greenhouse. This paper presents a theoretical design study and analysis to assess the viability of a zero-fossil-energy-greenhouse concept. The greenhouse was designed for Dutch circumstances and relies on available state-of-art technologies. Nine concepts were generated and evaluated by a panel of experts. Although, none of the concepts was unanimously selected, one of the concepts received on-average highest votes. It uses an aquifer for long term heat and cold storage. Geothermal heat and a heat pump connected to the warm pit of the aquifer are used to heat of the greenhouse. Electricity need is covered by green-electricity. Cooling and dehumidification of the greenhouse is realised by a heat pump combined with the cold aquifer pit. This concept was more thoroughly evaluated in a simulation study that assessed design consistency and evaluated greenhouse performance in view of design requirements. From the simulations it was concluded that a combination of geothermal heat and a heat pump/aquifer can cover the heat demand of the greenhouse with help of heat buffers, but a fully closed greenhouse concept is not manageable in the summer season. With given technology the chosen concept was not able to cool and dehumidify greenhouse air to target temperature and humidity. A semi closed greenhouse solves this problem
Effect of high frequency ultrasounds on lycopene and total phenolic concentration, antioxidant properties and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of tomato juice
Tomato juice was subjected to high frequency ultrasounds(378 and 583 kHz)at increasing energy densities (up to 250 MJ/m3). Results relevant to the treatments at high frequency providing an energy density of 250 MJ/m3 were compared with those obtained at 24 kHz delivering the same energy density. Lycopene and total phenolic concentration, as well as the α-glucosidase inhibitory activityof tomato juice, were not affected by ultrasound regardless the frequency and energy density. However, the antioxidant properties were negatively affected by high frequency ultrasounds
The Living Rainforest Sustainable Greenhouses
The Living Rainforest (www.livingrainforest.org) is an educational charity that uses rainforest ecology as a metaphor for communicating general sustainability issues to the public. Its greenhouses and office buildings are to be renovated using the most sustainable methods currently available. This will be realised through construction of a high insulating greenhouse covering with a k-value of less than 2 Wm-2K-1, passive seasonal storage of excess summer solar energy in the ground by a ground source heat exchanger and exploitation of this low grade solar energy for heating in winter by a heat pump. In winter the heat pump will produce cold water to cool the ground allowing a passive cooling function in summer via the GSHE. It will be demonstrated that a GSHE is an alternative for an open aquifer in regions with no aquifer availability. The heat pump will deliver the heating baseload, the peak load will be delivered by a biomass boiler, fired with locally-sourced low-cost wood chips. It is expected that the energy saving will be about 75%, resulting in a major cost reduction. The low k-value of the covering is linked to a light transmission of 75 %. This is high enough for the demands of the vegetation in The Living Rainforest. Because the inner greenhouse climate demands are comparable to that of ornamentals, the results will be applicable to commercial ornamental production. In future low k-value coverings will also be available with high light transmission, allowing wider application of the results. This paper focuses on the correlation between k-value, light transmission and energy demand in order to investigate the trade-off between light transmittance (a major energy gain) and heat loss. The effects of these design parameters on storage and harvesting capacity are also considered but appear to have a low sensitivity. The renovated greenhouse site at The Living Rainforest will show that new greenhouses and ecology can be linked to sustainability and this will be communicated and demonstrated to the public
Modeling and predicting the shape of the far-infrared to submillimeter emission in ultra-compact HII regions and cold clumps
Dust properties are very likely affected by the environment in which dust
grains evolve. For instance, some analyses of cold clumps (7 K- 17 K) indicate
that the aggregation process is favored in dense environments. However,
studying warm (30 K-40 K) dust emission at long wavelength (300
m) has been limited because it is difficult to combine far
infared-to-millimeter (FIR-to-mm) spectral coverage and high angular resolution
for observations of warm dust grains. Using Herschel data from 70 to 500
m, which are part of the Herschel infrared Galactic (Hi-GAL) survey
combined with 1.1 mm data from the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey (BGPS), we
compared emission in two types of environments: ultra-compact HII (UCHII)
regions, and cold molecular clumps (denoted as cold clumps). With this
comparison we tested dust emission models in the FIR-to-mm domain that
reproduce emission in the diffuse medium, in these two environments (UCHII
regions and cold clumps). We also investigated their ability to predict the
dust emission in our Galaxy. We determined the emission spectra in twelve UCHII
regions and twelve cold clumps, and derived the dust temperature (T) using the
recent two-level system (TLS) model with three sets of parameters and the
so-called T- (temperature-dust emissvity index) phenomenological models,
with set to 1.5, 2 and 2.5. We tested the applicability of the TLS
model in warm regions for the first time. This analysis indicates distinct
trends in the dust emission between cold and warm environments that are visible
through changes in the dust emissivity index. However, with the use of standard
parameters, the TLS model is able to reproduce the spectral behavior observed
in cold and warm regions, from the change of the dust temperature alone,

JTM's Tumor immunology goes broad: announcing the Immunobiology and Immunotherapy section.
For the last four years the Journal of Translational Medicine (JTM) has hosted the Section of Tumor Immunology and Biological Cancer Therapy. Under the editorial leadership of Dr. Pedro Romero and with the direct support of the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC), this section enriched the communication between basic immunological sciences and the clinical investigation arena in oncology. We are re-launching this Section of JTM, now entitled Immunobiology and Immunotherapy, succeeding Tumor Immunology and Biological Cancer Therapy. While aiming to build on the editorial success and focus of its predecessor, this novel Section will have a broader scope, hosting translational immunology topics pertaining to immunotherapy beyond oncology, including disciplines such as inflammation, autoimmunity, transplantation, metabolic disorders and others. As the vision of this re-launched Section of JTM broadens up to serve a communication need for translational immunologists involved with immunotherapy irrespectively of the therapeutic area, a novel and focused journal entitled Journal for Immunotherapy of Cancer (JITC) has just been initiated, sponsored by the SITC
The Structure of a Low-Metallicity Giant Molecular Cloud Complex
To understand the impact of low metallicities on giant molecular cloud (GMC)
structure, we compare far infrared dust emission, CO emission, and dynamics in
the star-forming complex N83 in the Wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud. Dust
emission (measured by Spitzer as part of the S3MC and SAGE-SMC surveys) probes
the total gas column independent of molecular line emission and traces
shielding from photodissociating radiation. We calibrate a method to estimate
the dust column using only the high-resolution Spitzer data and verify that
dust traces the ISM in the HI-dominated region around N83. This allows us to
resolve the relative structures of H2, dust, and CO within a giant molecular
cloud complex, one of the first times such a measurement has been made in a
low-metallicity galaxy. Our results support the hypothesis that CO is
photodissociated while H2 self-shields in the outer parts of low-metallicity
GMCs, so that dust/self shielding is the primary factor determining the
distribution of CO emission. Four pieces of evidence support this view. First,
the CO-to-H2 conversion factor averaged over the whole cloud is very high 4-11
\times 10^21 cm^-2/(K km/s), or 20-55 times the Galactic value. Second, the
CO-to-H2 conversion factor varies across the complex, with its lowest (most
nearly Galactic) values near the CO peaks. Third, bright CO emission is largely
confined to regions of relatively high line-of-sight extinction, A_V >~ 2 mag,
in agreement with PDR models and Galactic observations. Fourth, a simple model
in which CO emerges from a smaller sphere nested inside a larger cloud can
roughly relate the H2 masses measured from CO kinematics and dust.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures (including appendix), accepted for publication

The dust properties and physical conditions of the interstellar medium in the LMC massive star forming complex N11
We combine Spitzer and Herschel data of the star-forming region N11 in the
Large Magellanic Cloud to produce detailed maps of the dust properties in the
complex and study their variations with the ISM conditions. We also compare
APEX/LABOCA 870um observations with our model predictions in order to decompose
the 870um emission into dust and non-dust (free-free emission and CO(3-2) line)
contributions. We find that in N11, the 870um can be fully accounted for by
these 3 components. The dust surface density map of N11 is combined with HI and
CO observations to study local variations in the gas-to-dust mass ratios. Our
analysis leads to values lower than those expected from the LMC low-metallicity
as well as to a decrease of the gas-to-dust mass ratio with the dust surface
density. We explore potential hypotheses that could explain the low observed
gas-to-dust mass ratios (variations in the XCO factor, presence of CO-dark gas
or of optically thick HI or variations in the dust abundance in the dense
regions). We finally decompose the local SEDs using a Principal Component
Analysis (i.e. with no a priori assumption on the dust composition in the
complex). Our results lead to a promising decomposition of the local SEDs in
various dust components (hot, warm, cold) coherent with that expected for the
region. Further analysis on a larger sample of galaxies will follow in order to
understand how unique this decomposition is or how it evolves from one

Involvement of fatty acid pathways and cortical interaction of the pronuclear complex in Caenorhabditis elegans embryonic polarity.
BACKGROUND: Cell polarity is essential for many decisions made during development. While investigation of polarity-specific factors has yielded great insights into the polarization process, little is known on how these polarity-specific factors link to the basic cellular mechanisms that function in non-polarity aspects of the cell. To better understand the mechanisms that establish embryonic polarity, we investigated genes required for polarity in the one-cell C. elegans embryo that are also required for other non-polarity functions. This has led to the identification of the Pod-class of mutants that are characterized by osmosensitive embryos and defects in anterior-posterior polarity. RESULTS: Mutation in either of two loci of this class, emb-8 and pod-2, disrupts embryonic polarization and results in osmotically-sensitive embryos. Loss of emb-8, a previously uncharacterized polarity gene, causes mislocalization of PAR-3 and PAR-2 that molecularly mark the anterior and posterior cortices. emb-8 encodes NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase, a protein supplying electrons to cytochrome P450-family enzymes, some of which catalyze fatty acid modifications. Cloning of the previously characterized polarity gene pod-2 reveals it encodes acetyl-CoA carboxylase, an enzyme that catalyzes the first step in de novo fatty acid synthesis. Depletion of fatty acid synthase, the next enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway, by RNA-interference (RNAi) also causes similar loss of one-cell polarity. Furthermore, pod-2 polarity defects can be rescued by addition of exogenous fatty acids. By following the behavior of the pronucleus in emb-8 and pod-2 mutant embryos, we demonstrate that loss of polarity correlates with impaired interaction between the pronucleus-centrosome complex and the posterior cortex. CONCLUSIONS: The characterization of emb-8 and pod-2 mutant embryos suggests that the pronucleus-centrosome complex interaction with the cortex plays a direct role in establishing polarity and that fatty acid pathways are important for this polarizing event.RIGHTS : This article is licensed under the BioMed Central licence at http://www.biomedcentral.com/about/license which is similar to the 'Creative Commons Attribution Licence'. Motivational interviewing and problem solving treatment to reduce type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk in real life: a randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND: Intensive lifestyle interventions in well-controlled settings are effective in lowering the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), but there are still no effective lifestyle interventions for everyday practice. In the Hoorn Prevention Study we aimed to assess the effectiveness of a primary care based lifestyle intervention to reduce the estimated risk of developing T2DM and for CVD mortality, and to motivate changes in lifestyle behaviors. METHODS: The Hoorn Prevention Study is a parallel group randomized controlled trial, implemented in the region of West-Friesland, the Netherlands. 622 adults with ≥10% estimated risk of T2DM and/or CVD mortality were randomly assigned and monitored over a period of 12 months. The intervention group (n=314) received a theory-based lifestyle intervention based on an innovative combination of motivational interviewing and problem solving treatment, provided by trained practice nurses in 12 general practices. The control group (n=308) received existing health brochures. Primary outcomes was the estimated diabetes risk according to the formula of the Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities (ARIC) Study, and the estimated risk for CVD mortality according to the Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) formula. Secondary outcomes included lifestyle behavior (diet, physical activity and smoking). The research assistants, the principal investigator and the general practitioners were blinded to group assignment. Linear and logistic regression analysis was applied to examine the between-group differences in each outcome measure, adjusted for baseline values. RESULTS: 536 (86.2%) of the 622 participants (age 43.5 years) completed the 6-month follow-up, and 502 (81.2%) completed the 12-month follow-up. The mean baseline T2DM risk was 18.9% (SD 8.2) and the mean CVD mortality risk was 3.8% (SD 3.0). The intervention group participated in a median of 2 sessions. Intention-to-treat analyses showed no significant differences in outcomes between the two groups at 6 or 12-months follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The lifestyle intervention was not more effective than health brochures in reducing risk scores for T2DM and CVD or improving lifestyle behavior in an at-risk population. Hierarchical progressive surveys. Multi-resolution HEALPix data structures for astronomical images, catalogues, and 3-dimensional data cubes
Scientific exploitation of the ever increasing volumes of astronomical data
requires efficient and practical methods for data access, visualisation, and
analysis. Hierarchical sky tessellation techniques enable a multi-resolution
approach to organising data on angular scales from the full sky down to the
individual image pixels. Aims. We aim to show that the Hierarchical progressive
survey (HiPS) scheme for describing astronomical images, source catalogues, and
three-dimensional data cubes is a practical solution to managing large volumes
of heterogeneous data and that it enables a new level of scientific
interoperability across large collections of data of these different data
types. Methods. HiPS uses the HEALPix tessellation of the sphere to define a
hierarchical tile and pixel structure to describe and organise astronomical
data. HiPS is designed to conserve the scientific properties of the data
alongside both visualisation considerations and emphasis on the ease of
implementation. We describe the development of HiPS to manage a large number of
diverse image surveys, as well as the extension of hierarchical image systems
to cube and catalogue data. We demonstrate the interoperability of HiPS and
Multi-Order Coverage (MOC) maps and highlight the HiPS mechanism to provide
links to the original data. Results. Hierarchical progressive surveys have been
generated by various data centres and groups for ~200 data collections
including many wide area sky surveys, and archives of pointed observations.
These can be accessed and visualised in Aladin, Aladin Lite, and other
applications. HiPS provides a basis for further innovations in the use of
hierarchical data structures to facilitate the description and statistical
