Genetic Map of Bacteriophage [var phi]X174

    Get PDF
Bacteriophage [var phi]X174 temperature-sensitive and nonsense mutations in eight cistrons were mapped by using two-, three-, and four-factor genetic crosses. The genetic map is circular with a total length of 24 × 10−4wt recombinants per progeny phage. The cistron order is D-E-F-G-H-A-B-C. High negative interference is seen, consistent with a small closed circular deoxyribonucleic acid molecule as a genome

Discovery of Very High Energy gamma - ray emission from the extreme BL Lac object H2356-309 with H.E.S.S

The understanding of acceleration mechanisms in active galactic nuclei (AGN) jets and the measurement of the extragalactic-background-light (EBL) density are closely linked and require the detection of a large sample of very-high-energy (VHE) emitting extragalactic objects at varying redshifts. We report here on the discovery with the H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes of the VHE Gamma-ray emission from H2356 - 309, an extreme BL Lac object located at a redshift of 0.165. The observations of this object, which was previously proposed as a southern-hemisphere VHE candidate source, were performed between June and December 2004. The total exposure is 38.9 hours live time, after data quality selection, which yields the detection of a signal at the level of 9.0σ\sigma (standard deviations) .Comment: To appear on proceeding of 29th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2005

    Advanced crew procedures development techniques

The development of an operational computer program, the Procedures and Performance Program (PPP), is reported which provides a procedures recording and crew/vehicle performance monitoring capability. The PPP provides real time CRT displays and postrun hardcopy of procedures, difference procedures, performance, performance evaluation, and training script/training status data. During post-run, the program is designed to support evaluation through the reconstruction of displays to any point in time. A permanent record of the simulation exercise can be obtained via hardcopy output of the display data, and via magnetic tape transfer to the Generalized Documentation Processor (GDP). Reference procedures data may be transferred from the GDP to the PPP

Brooding Deficits in Memory: Focusing Attention Improves Subsequent Recall

Ruminative habits of thought about one’s problems and the resulting consequences are correlated with symptoms of depression and cognitive biases (Nolen-Hoeksema, Wisco, & Lyubomirsky, 2008). In our orienting task, brooders and nonbrooders concentrated on self-focusing phrases while they were also exposed to neutral target words. On each trial in the unfocused condition, participants saw and then reported the target before concentrating on the phrase; in the focused condition, the target was reported after phrase concentration. A brooding-related deficit on a subsequent unexpected test of free and forced recall was obtained in the unfocused condition only. Brooders recalled more successfully in the focused than in the unfocused condition. Thus, impaired recall of material unrelated to self-concerns may be corrected in situations that constrain attention

The study developed requirements, designed, developed, checked out and demonstrated the Procedures Generation Program (PGP). The PGP is a digital computer program which provides a computerized means of developing flight crew procedures based on crew action in the shuttle procedures simulator. In addition, it provides a real time display of procedures, difference procedures, performance data and performance evaluation data. Reconstruction of displays is possible post-run. Data may be copied, stored on magnetic tape and transferred to the document processor for editing and documentation distribution

    H.E.S.S. observations of galaxy clusters

Clusters of galaxies, the largest gravitationally bound objects in the universe, are expected to contain a significant population of hadronic and leptonic cosmic rays. Potential sources for these particles are merger and accretion shocks, starburst driven galactic winds and radio galaxies. Furthermore, since galaxy clusters confine cosmic ray protons up to energies of at least 1 PeV for a time longer than the Hubble time they act as storehouses and accumulate all the hadronic particles which are accelerated within them. Consequently clusters of galaxies are potential sources of VHE (> 100 GeV) gamma rays. Motivated by these considerations, promising galaxy clusters are observed with the H.E.S.S. experiment as part of an ongoing campaign. Here, upper limits for the VHE gamma ray emission for the Abell 496 and Coma cluster systems are reported.Comment: Contribution to the 30th ICRC, Merida Mexico, July 200

Manufacturing cement-based materials and building products via extrusion: From laboratory to factory

    Get PDF
Manufacturing is critical to the economies of the UK and many other countries in the rest of the world. However, manufacturing of cement-based materials and building products predominantly remains based on old batch processing such as casting and pressing technologies and this may limit the applications and performance of the materials and products formed. In this paper, research is reported on transforming manufacturing of precast cement-based materials and building products from in batches to continuous processes via extrusion. Techniques used for producing plastic products are transferred into manufacturing cement-based building products like flat and corrugated sheet tiles, down pipes, door/window frames, door panels, solid wall/facade panels, honeycomb wall/facade panels etc. at laboratory and factory scales. In combination with sustainable cementitious materials with low carbon and low energy as matrix, this enables sustainable building products with key characteristics required by the 21st century can be manufactured via extrusion. The cement-based building products extrusion technique has been successfully transferred to industry. For instance, fibre reinforced cement-based partition wall panels, with a honeycomb cross section as large as 600 mm wide and 90 mm high, have been produced by a continuous extrusion process in a precast concrete products factory in Hangzhou, China.European Commission Seventh Framework Programme, (grant agreement no. 262954) and from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council through grants 6091/00E, 6226/01E, 6273/03E and 6167/06

Positive Catch and Economic Benefits of Periodic Octopus Fishery Closures: Do Effective, Narrowly Targeted Actions 'Catalyze' Broader Management?

    No full text
Eight years of octopus fishery records from southwest Madagascar reveal significant positive impacts from 36 periodic closures on: (a) fishery catches and (b) village fishery income, such that (c) economic benefits from increased landings outweigh costs of foregone catch. Closures covered 20% of a village's fished area and lasted 2-7 months. We discuss the implications of our findings for broader co-management arrangements, particularly for catalyzing more comprehensive management
