    Evaluation of insulin-like growth factor-I gene polymorphism in Egyptian small ruminant breeds

    The genetic improvement of production traits can be developed through marker assisted selection. Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) is a member of the somatotrophic axis which has a remarkable variation of its biological effect including protein synthesis and skeletal growth. This study aimed to detect the genetic polymorphism of IGF-1 in different Egyptian sheep and goat breeds. The amplified fragments at 320-bp were digested with HaeIII endonuclease and the results show the presence of three different genotypes: CC (15.71%), CG (29.29%) and GG (55.0%). The nucleotide sequence analysis of C and G alleles declared the presence of a single nucleotide polymorphism (C→G) at position 282. The nucleotide sequences of alleles C and G in sheep and goat were submitted to GenBank with the accession number: KX432965, KX432966, KX432967 and KX432968, respectively. In conclusion, a nucleotide substitution (C→G) was detected in IGF-I gene in Egyptian sheep and goat breeds resulting in the presence of three different genotypes; CC, CG and GG. The association of IGF-I polymorphism with different growth trait parameters were reported at significant levels, so, the genetic and SNP variations in IGF-I gene may be a potential molecular marker for growth traits in different Egyptian sheep and goat breeds.Keywords: IGF-1, polymerase chain reaction - restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), DNA sequencing, sheep, goa

    DNA Characterization and Polymorphism of KISS1 Gene in Egyptian Small Ruminant Breeds

    Genetic information especially of the Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) which affect different performance traits is considered one of the most effective tools in the breeding programs of livestock. Several genes were reported as candidate genes that effect litter size performance and one of these genes is the KISS1 which is considered as a regulator of puberty onset. The polymorphisms of KISS1 gene have some relationships with high prolific and sexual precocity. The objective of this study was the detection of the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of KISS1 gene in six major Egyptian small ruminant breeds. The primers used in this study flanked a 377 bp fragment from intron 1 of KISS1 gene in sheep and goat. These PCR amplified fragments were digested with XmnI endonuclease. According to the presence or absence of the restriction site (GAANN^NNTTC) at position 121^122, we genotyped the 122 tested animals as AT (54.92%) and TT (45.08) with the absence of AA genotype. The overall frequencies of alleles A and T were 27.46 and 72.54%, respectively. The sequence analysis of purified PCR products representing these two detected genotypes declared the presence of a SNP (T→A) at position 125 in the amplified fragment which is responsible for the elimination of the restriction site and consequently the presence of two different alleles T and A. The nucleotide sequences of sheep KISS1 alleles T and A as well as goat KISS1 alleles T and A were submitted to GenBank database and have accession numbers: KP835797, KP835798, KP835799 and KP835800, respectively. It is concluded that small ruminant breeds have high frequency of KISS1 allele T which was associated with greater litter size. We recommend to increase this allele in Egyptian small ruminant breeds and also to select the animals which possess TT genotypes of KISS1 gene and enter them in breeding programs of Egyptian small ruminants to increase their fecundity traits.Keywords: Sheep, Goat, KISS1, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP), Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs

    On the SigmaN cusp in the pp -> pK+Lambda reaction

    Measurements of the pppK+Λpp \to pK^+\Lambda reaction at TpT_p = 2.28 GeV have been carried out at COSY-TOF. In addition to the Λp\Lambda p FSI and NN^* resonance excitation effects a pronounced narrow structure is observed in the Dalitz plot and in its projection on the pΛp\Lambda-invariant mass. The structure appears at the pppp \to NK+ΣK^+\Sigma threshold and is interpreted as Σ\SigmaN cusp effect. The observed width of 20 MeV/c2c^2 is substantially broader than anticipated from previous inclusive measurements. Angular distributions of this cusp structure are shown to be dissimilar to those in the residual pK+ΛpK^+\Lambda channel, but similar to those observed in the pK+Σ0pK^+\Sigma^0 channel

    Flavour Quality and Stability of an Encapsulated Meat-Like Process Flavouring Prepared from Soybean Based Acid Hydrolyzed Protein

    The main objective of this study was to produce meat-like process flavouring by using a model mixture based on acid hydrolyzed soybean protein (a-HVP) in addition to xylose, thiamine, cysteine and taurine . Glutamic was the major amino acid in a-HVP followed by aspartic, glycine and alanine. The meat –like process flavour was encapsulated in gum Arabic and stored at room temperature for 6 months. The changes in quality and flavour stability were followed during storage. The results revealed that the roasty and savoury notes were increased whereas chickeny, beefy and grilled meat notes showed significant (P< 0.05) decrease during storage. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that 2-methyl-3-furanthiol, the main contributor to beefy note, was the major identified compound in the fresh sample. It showed remarkable decrease after storage for 6 months. The pyrazines and thiazoles showed an opposite trend. A quite agreement was found between the results of the odour profile analysis and those of GC-MS analysis. The results of the present study give important information to the flavourists who are working in field of process flavours, especially meat-like process flavour

    Skill components of higher education in the era of sustainable development: an analytical study among university students in Qatar

    IntroductionThe present study investigates the status of education for sustainable development (ESD) as an approach applied to higher education. This study proposes cognitive, behavioral, and socio-emotional learning as the three dimensions of ESD. It examines the extent to which the current curriculum and educational structures applied by Qatar University (QU) contribute to sustainable development (SD) skills in students' attitudes.MethodsData from 319 students were collected. Factor analysis was performed to regroup skill items within the consistent dimensions of 16 core skills. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the relationship between core skills and the five SD skills.FindingsFive logistic regression models were investigated. Model 1 found two predictors that only increase the odds of innovative thinking skills. Model 2 detected five predictors that increase the odds of critical thinking skills. Model 3 defined three predictors that increase the odds of resolving problem skills. Model 4 mentioned four predictors that increase the odds of communication/coordination skills. Model 5 showed two predictors that increase the odds of decision-making skills.Research implicationsThis study introduces new core skills that have been reclassified based on students' real-world experiences. Such findings may help target specific skills and bring significant changes in higher education outcomes

    Effect of Annealing and Ion Beam Irradiation on AC Electrical Properties for Gold Sputtered PM-355

    171-181Deposition of different gold thickness on PM-355 cleaned by ethanol forming thin films using magnetron sputtering. Gold layer with thickness 300, 400, 500, 700, 1000, 1300, and 1500 nm were deposited to prepare Au / PM-355 thin films. Then, ac electrical properties response of thin films for a wide frequency range 20Hz - 5MHz were measured at room temperature. Meanwhile, the measurements of ac conductivity, dielectric constant, and dielectric loss factor were plotted at different frequencies to determine the optimum thickness. Hence, the comparison was done between optimum Au thickness thin films cleaned by two organic solvents and ethanol before annealing at different frequencies. Also, study the effect of annealing and ion beam that extracted radially from conical anode and disc cathode ion source on optimum Au thickness thin film electrical properties. It is found that the annealing increases both dielectric constant, dielectric loss, and ac conductivity of optimum Au thin film at different frequencies. Despite, the nitrogen ion beam effected on these thin films by decreasing the dielectric constant and ac conductivity for all thin films except the chloroform one. Finally, study the comparison between the annealing and followed by ion irradiation thin films. It is noticed the decrease in ac electrical conductivity and dielectric constant at different frequencies

    Systematic study of the pp -> pp omega reaction

    A systematic study of the production of omega-mesons in proton-proton-collisions was carried out in a kinematically complete experiment at three excess energies(epsilon= 92, 128, 173MeV). Both protons were detected using the large-acceptance COSY-TOF spectrometer at an external beam line at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY at Forschungszentrum J\"ulich. The total cross section, angular distributions of both omega-mesons and protons were measured and presented in various reference frames such as the overall CMS, helicity and Jackson frame. In addition, the orientation of the omega-spin and invariant mass spectra were determined. We observe omega-production to take place dominantly in Ss and Sp final states at epsilon = 92, 128 MeV and, additionally, in Sd at epsilon= 173 MeV. No obvious indication of resonant omega-production via N^*-resonances was found, as proton angular distributions are almost isotropic and invariant mass spectra are compatible with phase space distributions. A dominant role of ^3P_1 and ^1S_0 initial partial waves for omega-production was concluded from the orientation of the decay plane of the omega-meson. Although the Jackson angle distributions in the omega-p-Jackson frame are anisotropic we argue that this is not an indication of a resonance but rather a kinematical effect reflecting the anisotropy of the omega angular distribution. The helicity angle distribution in the omega-p-helicity frame shows an anisotropy which probably reflects effects of the omega angular momenta in the final state; this observable may be, in addition to the orientation of the omega decay plane, the most sensitive one to judge the validity of theoretical descriptions of the production process.Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in EPJ

    Production of Lambda and Sigma^0 hyperons in proton-proton collisions

    This paper reports results on simultaneous measurements of the reaction channels pp -> pK+\Lambda and pp -> pK+\Sigma^0 at excess energies of 204, 239, and 284 MeV (\Lambda) and 127, 162, and 207 MeV (\Sigma^0). Total and differential cross sections are given for both reactions. It is concluded from the measured total cross sections that the high energy limit of the cross section ratio is almost reached at an excess energy of only about 200 MeV. From the differential distributions observed in the overall CMS as well as in the Jackson and helicity frames, a significant contribution of interfering nucleon resonances to the \Lambda production mechanism is concluded while resonant \Sigma^0-production seems to be of lesser importance and takes place only through specific partial waves of the entrance channel. The data also indicate that kaon exchange plays a minor role in the case of \Lambda- but an important role for \Sigma^0-production. Thus the peculiar energy dependence of the \Lambda-to-\Sigma^0 cross section ratio appears in a new light as its explanation requires more than mere differences between the p\Lambda and the p\Sigma^0 final state interaction.
