    Ornamental Stones of Piemonte (NW Italy): an updated geo-lithological map

    The 'Ornamental Stones of Piemonte Region' geo-lithological map at 1:250,000 scale aims at reviewing the ornamental stone heritage of Piemonte at the regional scale. The map derives from a thorough revision of the available literature, integrated with some unpublished original data. The map shows the location of the main quarries of ornamental stones of the region, selected on the basis of their historical, cultural and architectonic relevance. A geo-lithological basemap was produced, deriving it from a basic Geological Map of Piemonte, available at the same scale. The large varieties of lithotypes of Piemonte have been resumed, in the new map, into 21 classes, which all the ornamental stones have been assigned to. The Main Map is enriched by some significant examples of using the ornamental stones in historical buildings, and it is supported by a supplementary data base containing essential information about the quarry sites and the quarried material

    Telah dilakukan penelitian tentang pengaruh konsentrasi larutan zatwarna DCM pada karakteristik spektrum keluaran laser zatwarna DCM pulsa. Spektrum yang dihasilkan berupa intensitas dan jangkauan panjang gelombang. Variasi konsentrasi DCM pada larutan methanol yang dilakukan yaitu: 0,040,060,080,10,20,40,60,8dan I gram/liter dan masing-masing menghasilkan spektrum yang berbeda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya pengaruh konsentrasi terhadap intensitas dan jangkauan panjang gelombang keluaran laser. Makin pekat konsentrasi larutan, intensitas keluarannya makin tinggi dan jangkauan panjang gelombangnya semakin lebar serta menstabilkan keluaran laser. Kondisi optimum dicapai pada konsentrasi 0,4 gram/liter. Kata kunci: konsentrasi, larutan, spektrum

    Abstract Although in Europe the quality of swimming pools (SPs) is dictated by regulations, microbiological and chemical hazards are described in the literature. Environmental bacteria or toxic disinfection by-product (DBP) compounds may indeed be recovered in waters even after disinfection. We evaluated the water quality from 26 outdoor seasonal SPs of the Versilia district, according to requirements of Regional Decree 54R/2015. In spring 2017, supply and reinstatement waters were collected after shock hyperchlorination (10 mg/L) while in summertime, a second sampling of waters before entering the pools, as well as in the pools, was performed after SPs were open to the public. In all samples, microbiological and chemical parameters were determined as defined by Directive 98/83/EC and the Italian Health Ministry. Microbiological data were within suggested limits. The first chemical analyses showed that in 35% of the feeding-pool seawater samples, the halogenated organic compounds were higher than the maximum permissible concentrations (30 Ī¼g/L). Pool waters were then dechlorinated and re-treated with hydrogen peroxide (10 mg/L) to ensure the abatement of DBPs (from 164 Ā± 107 to 0.9 Ā± 0.8 Ī¼g/L; p = 0.002). Results highlighted the need of self-controlled procedures for the SPs waters to prevent waterborne diseases and suggested hydrogen peroxide as the most appropriate disinfection method

    The VLT-FLAMES survey of massive stars: Wind properties and evolution of hot massive stars in the LMC

    [Abridged] We have studied the optical spectra of 28 O- and early B-type stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, 22 of which are associated with the young star-forming region N11. Stellar parameters are determined using an automated fitting method, combining the stellar atmosphere code FASTWIND with the genetic-algorithm optimisation routine PIKAIA. Results for stars in the LH9 and LH10 associations of N11 are consistent with a sequential star formation scenario, in which activity in LH9 triggered the formation of LH10. Our sample contains four stars of spectral type O2, of which the hottest is found to be ~49-54 kK (cf. ~45-46 kK for O3 stars). The masses of helium-enriched dwarfs and giants are systematically lower than those implied by non-rotating evolutionary tracks. We interpret this as evidence for efficient rotationally-enhanced mixing, leading to the surfacing of primary helium and to an increase of the stellar luminosity. This result is consistent with findings for SMC stars by Mokiem et al. For bright giants and supergiants no such mass-discrepancy is found, implying that these stars follow tracks of modestly (or non-)rotating objects. Stellar mass-loss properties were found to be intermediate to those found in massive stars in the Galaxy and the SMC, and comparisons with theoretical predictions at LMC metallicity yielded good agreement over the luminosity range of our targets, i.e. 5.0 < log L/L(sun) < 6.1

    From Exploratory Tunnel to Base Tunnel: Hard Rock TBM Performance Prediction by Means of a Stochastic Approach

    AbstractTunnel boring machine (TBM) performance prediction is often a critical issue in the early stage of a tunnelling project, mainly due to the unpredictable nature of some important factors affecting the machine performance. In this regard, deterministic approaches are normally employed, providing results in terms of average values expected for the TBM performance. Stochastic approaches would offer improvement over deterministic methods, taking into account the parameter variability; however, their use is limited, since the level of information required is often not available. In this study, the data provided by the excavation of the Maddalena exploratory tunnel were used to predict the net and overall TBM performance for a 2.96 km section of the Mont Cenis base tunnel by using a stochastic approach. The preliminary design of the TBM cutterhead was carried out. A prediction model based on field penetration index, machine operating level and utilization factor was adopted. The variability of the parameters involved was analysed. A procedure to take into account the correlation between the input variables was described. The probability of occurrence of the outcomes was evaluated, and the total excavation time expected for the tunnel section analysed was calculated

    Elastic geobarometry for anisotropic inclusions in cubic hosts

    Mineral inclusions entrapped in other minerals may record the local stresses at the moment of their entrapment in the deep Earth. When rocks are exhumed to the surface of the Earth, residual stresses and strains may still be preserved in the inclusion. If measured and interpreted correctly through elastic geobarometry, they give us invaluable information on the pressures (P) and temperatures (T) of metamorphism. Current estimates of P and T of entrapment rely on simplified models that assumes that the inclusion is spherical and embedded in an infinite host, and that their elastic properties are isotropic. We report a new method for elastic geobarometry for anisotropic inclusions in quasi-isotropic hosts. The change of strain in the inclusion is modelled with the axial equations of state of the host and the inclusion. Their elastic interaction is accounted for by introducing a 4th rank tensor, the relaxation tensor, that can be evaluated numerically for any symmetry of the host and the inclusion and for any geometry of the system. This approach can be used to predict the residual strain/stress state developed in an inclusion after exhumation from known entrapment conditions, or to estimate the entrapment conditions from the residual strain measured in real inclusions. In general, anisotropic strain and stress states are developed in non-cubic mineral inclusions such as quartz and zircon, with deviatoric stresses typically limited to few kbars. For garnet hosts, the effect of the mutual crystallographic orientation between the host and the inclusion on the residual strain and stress is negligible when the inclusion is spherical and isolated. Assuming external hydrostatic conditions, our results suggest that the isotropic and the new anisotropic models give estimations of entrapment conditions within 2%
