application/pdfDogs suffer from many diseases such as distemper and hard-pad disease which exhibit a variety of nervous symptoms. As it seems that the reliable method has not been developed for the purpose of clinical diagnosis of these symptoms, a kind of procedure for collection of cerebrospinal fluid was established by means of suboccipital puncture, which had been thought to be dangerous and uncertain, and for this purpose a method for estimation of suboccipital depth was devised. The normal values for cerebrospinal fluid with respect to colour, pressure, specific gravity, pH, NONNE-APELT reaction, TAKATA-ARA reaction, protein level, sugar level, and number and kind of cells were established as the result of studying the fluid obtained from healthy dogs by means of this method. Cerebrospinal fluid from the dogs, narcotized with chloral hydrate, methylhexabital sodium, morphine hydrochloride and pentobarbital sodium, was also studied in order to extend the application of this method, and compared with that from healthy dogs. Moreover, by comparing the fluid from the same dogs between under narcotized and unnarcotized conditions, the influence of pretreatment upon the fluid was investigated. The studies on cerebrospinal fluid collected from dogs suffering from filariosis, ancylostmosis, respiratry diseases, affected liver function and distemper were carried out, and compared with the normal values, yielding a number of useful results.Bulletin of the University of Osaka Prefecture.
