Effect of quality assessment on cultivar performance in timothy variety testing in Finland

    Get PDF
Significant differences in quality parameters among varieties were recorded for yields of both the first and second cuts. Differences in D-values reflected the differences in earliness of varieties and differences in protein content reflected differences in the yield of a particular cut. Quality assessment in cultivar trials would motivate breeders to enhance their efforts in quality improvement

Denial of Service in Voice Over IP Networks

    Get PDF
In this paper we investigate denial of service (DoS) vulnerabilities in Voice over IP (VoIP) systems, focusing on the ITU-T H.323 family of protocols. We provide a simple characterisation of DoS attacks that allows us to readily identify DoS issues in H.323 protocols. We also discuss network layer DoS vulnerabilities that affect VoIP systems. A number of improvements and further research directions are proposed

Selenium content of Finnish oats in 1997-1999: effect of cultivars and cultivation techniques

Se-supplemented fertilization is the main factor affecting the selenium (Se) contents of cereals in Finland. Soil and climatic conditions determine the activity of selenate added to soils and bioavailability to plants. In the present study the Se contents and its variation in Finnish oats, the differences between oat cultivars and cultivation techniques were examined. The selenium (Se) contents of oats (Avena sativa L.) in Finland were examined during 1997-1999 in 3 types of trial: official variety, organic cultivation variety and organic vs. conventional cultivation trials. Farm samples were also examined. The mean Se contents of oats in official variety trials were 0.110, 0.120 and 0.160 mg kg-1 dry weight (dw) range 0.016-0.460 mg kg-1dw in 1997-1999, respectively. The mean Se contents in farm samples were 0.050 and 0.130 mg kg-1dw in 1998 and 1999, ranging between < 0.010 and 0.330 mg kg-1 dw. Considerable regional and seasonal variations existed. The Se contents of oats were significantly higher in 1999 probably due to the combined effect of not increased fertilizer level (from 6 to 10 mg Se kg-1 fertilizer) and very low precipitation in 1999. The Se contents of oats were significantly lower in organic cultivation, due to the absence of Se-supplemented fertilization. Significant (P < 0.001) cultivar differences were detected in official variety trials. The cultivars Veli and Leila showed higher levels of Se

    Finnish Working-Class Argumentation—A Minimalist Exercise

    Get PDF
Finnish oral communication is often considered to be something of a minimalist exercise. A well-known expression of such communication is the so-called Proletariat Trilogy by the Finnish film-maker Aki Kaurismäki. This study presents an analysis of persuasive and argumentative dialogues in the manuscript to Shadows in Paradise. The approach is based on Searle’s speech acts, Grice’s conversational maxims, and Pragma-Dialectics. The result is a description of Finnish working-class everyday rhetoric as it is portrayed in the international breakthrough film of Kaurismäki

An Architecture for Network Layer Privacy

    Get PDF
We present an architecture for the provision of network layer privacy based on the SHIM6 multihoming protocol. In its basic form, the architecture prevents on-path eavesdroppers from using SHIM6 network layer information to correlate packets that belong to the same communication but use different locators. To achieve this, several extensions to the SHIM6 protocol and to the HBA (Hash Based Addresses) addressing model are defined. On its full-featured mode of operation, hosts can vary dynamically the addresses of the packets of on-going communications. Single-homed hosts can adopt the SHIM6 protocol with the privacy enhancements to benefit from this protection against information collectors.IEEE Communications SocietyPublicad

Secure Mobile IP with HIP Style Handshaking and Readdressing

Mobile IP allows the mobile node roaming into a new IP network without losing its connection with its peer. Mobile IPv6 is using Mobile IP with Route Optimizationto improve performance by avoiding the triangle routing and adopting Return Routability as a secure process for binding update. Host Identity Protocol (HIP) is an experimental security protocol which provides mobility management and multi-homing by its new namespace. Its architecture is similar to that of Mobile IP with Route Optimization. In this paper, we have introduced a Secure Mobile IP with HIP Style Handshaking and Readdressing (SMIP), which has stronger security, better performance and lower binding cost in binding update process compared with Mobile IPv6. The dependence of home agent in the new scheme is also shown dramatically decreased. The initiated scheme integrated the primary features of two completely different mobility management solutions and has set up a migration path from mobile-IP based solution to a public-key based solution in mobile IP network

Suoraan sydämeen : Laadullinen tutkimus kohdeyleisöön tutustumisen keinona

    Get PDF
Tämän opinnäytetyön aiheena on laadullisen tutkimuksen hyödyntäminen oman av-tuotannon kohdeyleisöön tutustumisessa. Projektin lopputuloksena on syntynyt kolme elokuvaa tuberkuloosista. The subject of this Bachelor’s thesis is the use of qualitative research as a way to get to know the target audience of one’s audiovisual production. The aim is to apply different research methods, such as interviews and observation, to find the target audience’s feelings and experiences, and also raise awareness about the importance of target audience understanding in audiovisual produc-tions. The research question of this thesis is how to define and get to know the target audience of one’s audiovisual production. The example case of this thesis is a tuberculosis film project made in co-operation with Tampere Tuberculosis Foundation and Pirkanmaa Hospital District. The final products of the project are three films about tuberculosis. This project is carried through the thesis to demonstrate the theoretical parts. Different types of interview methods, observation and narrative research are the main qualitative methods introduced in this thesis. There are also thoughts about defining a target audience and finding the right media to reach them. Success indicators and the way all the researched information can be adapted into one’s film are also discussed. The purpose of the tuberculosis film project has been to raise conversation and awareness and to remove bad reputation around tuberculosis. The target audi-ence of the project has been young immigrants. The tuberculosis films are not traditional enlightenment films in which the facts are told straight forward. They are a new kind of awareness-films, through which the audience can figure out the facts themselves by connecting to the film emotionally. This creates a stronger emotional bond between the viewer and the subject of the film. The author of this thesis feels that the subject of target audiences is important when it comes to the distribution of the film and getting the wanted message across. The target audience is often seen as a mandatory definition that is done at the beginning of production and never returned to. This is something that the author would like to raise discussion and awareness on.Tämän työn liitteisiin merkitty tuberkuloosielokuvien DVD löytyy Tampereen ammattikorkeakoulun Finlaysonin kampuksen kirjastosta
