Meandering and eddy formation in separating western boundary currents

The dynamics of meandering and eddy detachment in separating western boundary currents are explored by considering inviscid, quasi-geostrophic current systems with both data analysis and modeling. In chapter two, hydrographic and velocity observations of the North Brazil Current (NBC) retroflection region during the 1990-1991 Western Tropical Atlantic Experiment are examined. A three-layer quasi-geostrophic approximation to the NBC region is built. Stream function and potential vorticity (PV) fields are presented. The upper and middle layer flows simulate the retroflection of the NBC waters at surface and subthermocline levels, respectively. The deepest layer is represented by a meandering weak southward flow that resembles the Deep Western Boundary Current. The participation of baroclinic instability in the NBC eddy-shedding is verified by isolating the effect of PV anomalies in each of the layers on each of the layers. In chapter three, a 1$1\over2$ layer contour dynamical model of two converging western boundary currents that form a zonal jet is built. It is intended to investigate the role of the coastline tilt and transport asymmetry between the converging currents in meander formation. The respective effects of coastline tilt and coastal current asymmetry can reinforce or cancel each other. In the former case, a retroflection type of boundary current separation, as observed in the Brazil Current separation, is obtained. In the latter case, a much smoother separation results, as observed in the Gulf Stream. In chapter four, a 2$1\over2$-layer contour dynamical model is built to investigate the role of baroclinic instability in forming eddies. The upper active layer flow structure is similar to that of the 1$1\over2$-layer model (chapter three). The lower active layer flow structure ranges from converging to diverging coastal current configurations. Unstable waves must either propagate westward or slowly in the eastward direction to allow coast/retroflection eddy formation. When retroflection eddies pinch off, both upper and lower layers present opposite-signed, closed, PV contours. This characterizes a dipolar vortex which can self-propagate away from the jet axis

Implantação e administração de laboratórios de informática para escolas de ensino médio

O computador, seus periféricos, o arranjo das salas, a rede de comunicação de dados, os tipos de programas que são utilizados, e muito mais, são apresentados aqui em termos de orientação e sugestão. Nesse trabalho procurou-se também agregar atividades efetuadas nos laboratórios do CEFET/SC (Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica de Santa Catarina) e da FETESC (Fundação do Ensino Técnico de Santa Catarina) buscando o esclarecimento de detalhes de pesquisa a nível de detalhamento, relato de experiências e contribuição científica ao tema

Patterns of distribution and abundance of larval phosichthyidae (actinopterygii, stomiiformes) in southeastern Brazilian waters

Horizontal and vertical distribution patterns and abundance of larval phosichthyids were investigated from oblique and depth-stratified towns off Southeastern brazilian waters, from São Tomé cape (41ºW.; 22ºS.) to São Sebastião island (45ºW.; 24ºS.). The sampling was performed during two cruises (January/2002 -summer; August/2002 -winter). Overall 538 larvae of Phosichthyidae were collected during summer and 158 in the winter. Three species, Pollichthys mauli, Vinciguerria nimbaria and Ichthyioccoccus sp. occurred in the area, but Ichthyioccoccus sp. was extremely rare represented by only one specimen, caught in the oceanic region during the summer. Geographically, larval were concentrated in the oceanic region, and vertically distributed mainly between the surface and 80 m depth in the summer and winter. Larvae were more abundant during the night, performing a diel vertical migration in the water column. The results suggest that the meandering and eddies of Brazil Current play important role on the transport and distribution patterns of larval phosichthyids over the oceanic and neritic area in the Southeastern Brazil.Padrões de distribuição horizontal e vertical e abundância de larvas de peixes de Phosichthyidae foram examinados a partir de arrastos oblíquos e estratificados em águas do Sudeste Brasileiro, entre cabo de São Tomé (41ºW.; 22ºS.) e a ilha de São Sebastião (45ºW.; 24ºS.). A amostragem foi realizada durante dois cruzeiros (Janeiro/2002 -verão; Agosto/2002 -inverno). Foi coletado um total de 538 larvas de Phosichthyidae durante o verão e 158 no inverno. Três espécies, Pollichthys mauli, Vinciguerria nimbaria e Ichthyioccoccus sp. ocorreram na área, mas Ichthyioccoccus sp. foi extremamente rara representada somente por uma larva, capturada na região oceânica durante o verão. Geograficamente, as larvas estiveram concentradas na região oceânica e verticalmente entre a superfície e 80 m de profundidade nos cruzeiros de verão e inverno. As larvas foram mais abundantes durante a noite, apresentando uma migração vertical diária na coluna d'água. Os resultados sugerem um importante papel dos meandramentos e vórtices da Corrente do Brasil no transporte e padrões de distribuição das larvas dos Phosichthyidae nas áreas oceânica e nerítica do sudeste brasileiro.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq

O surgimento de novas regiões metropolitanas no Brasil: uma discussão a respeito do caso de Sorocaba (SP)

No ano de 1973, sob a égide do governo militar, surgiram as nove primeiras regiões metropolitanas brasileiras no contexto da estratégia desenvolvimentista de tal governo. A partir da Constituição de 1988, a incumbência na criação de tais unidades político-regionais passa a ser dos legislativos estaduais. O que se vê então são dezenas de Projetos de Lei criando novas regiões metropolitanas no país. Até que ponto existe coerência em tais proposições? É o que pretendemos discutir com este artigo tendo como pano de fundo a proposta da criação da Região Metropolitana de Sorocaba.In 1973, under the aegis of the military government emerged the first nine metropolitan regions in the context of the development strategy of this government. From the 1988 Constitution, the task in the creation of such regional-political units becomes the state legislatures. What we see then are dozens of Bills creating new metropolitan areas in the country. To what extent is there consistency in such propositions? Beyond ‘ignorance’: using the cultural stereotypes of Americans studying in the UK as a resource for learning and teaching about British culture

A course introducing British culture is a standard component of many study abroad programmes running in this country that are aimed at international students who will be spending a limited amount of time in the United Kingdom. However, it is not often acknowledged that such students possess a range of strong pre-conceptions about British culture and society prior to their arrival. Conventional teaching strategies assume student ignorance of the subject. However, an alternative approach which makes us of pre-arrival stereotypes can be more productive in terms of engaging students in active processes of comparative analysis of their new and existing knowledge. A case study of American student stereotypes of the British monarchy is presented and it is suggested that these can be used as the basis for refining student understanding of cultural politics in the United Kingdom. International students, therefore, should not be treated as being culturally ignorant of Britain in the sense of having no knowledge or opinions at all. Rather, it should be understood that they possess a culturally mediated state of subjectivity which I refer to as ‘ignorance’ and that this can become a valuable resource for teaching and learning

Relação entre PIB, Emprego e Renda: um estudo comparativo entre dados nacionais e o município de Ituiutaba - MG

Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)Tendo como base períodos de crescimento e crises da economia brasileira ao longo dos últimos anos, esse estudo tem como objetivo comparar a relação entre PIB, nível de emprego e a renda média da população entre dados nacionais e o município de Ituiutaba – MG, no período de 2006 a 2015. Para isso foi feita uma análise da relação que essas variáveis têm sobre o PIB. Utilizando-se de métodos estatísticos Correlação de Pearson e o teste de Causalidade de Granger, o estudo conseguiu alcançar resultados que demonstram a relação entre a renda e o PIB e, como o emprego se relaciona com esses dois indicadores econômicos

PÓS-MODERNIDADE E CRISE DO ESTADO MODERNO: O OCASO DO CONSTITUCIONALISMO LIBERAL

O ocaso do constitucionalismo é decorrente da transição para a pós-modernidade que, entre outros fenômenos, é percebido por uma nova sociedade que reduz o seu universo político por adotar um discurso de eficiência e individualismo. Neste ambiente a hipótese imediata é de crise para o exercício da cidadania, no seu sentido clássico e expresso nas constituições democráticas liberais. Mas o formato do Estado Moderno, coeso e uniforme em torno do conceito de soberania, também é hoje questionado e a constituição, como documento e instrumento que simboliza este poder, é hipoteticamente desacreditada. Mas a constituição moderna, com os seus símbolos de solenidade, racionalidade e força, é um instrumento palpável e importante de resistência. Aliada à idéia de que é inerente à sociedade um conjunto de princípios que a rege, a constituição sobreviverá sob uma nova perspectiva. Uma perspectiva que tem que considerar o mundo globalizado e os fundamentos da pós-modernidade.The sunset of the constitucionalismo is resulting from the transition for to powders-modernity that, between other phenomena, it is realized by a new society that reduces his political universe because of adopting a speech of efficiency and individualism. In this environment the immediate hypothesis is of crisis for the practice of citizenship, in his sense classic and definite in the democratic liberal constitutions. But the format of the Modern, cohesive and uniform State around the concept of sovereignity, also is today questioned and the constitution, like document and instrument that symbolizes this power, it is hypothetically discredited. But the modern constitution, with his symbols of ceremony, rationality and it forces, it is a tangible and important instrument of resistance. When the constitution allied to the idea of which there is inherent in the society a set of beginnings that governs it, it will survive under a new perspective. A perspective that has to consider the globalized world and the bases of the powders-modernity
