The Geometry Of Hemi-Slant Submanifolds of a Locally Product Riemannian Manifold
In the present paper, we study hemi-slant submanifolds of a locally product
Riemannian manifold. We prove that the anti-invariant distribution which is
involved in the definition of hemi-slant submanifold is integrable and give
some applications of this result. We get a necessary and sufficient condition
for a proper hemi-slant submanifold to be a hemi-slant product. We also study
this type submanifolds with parallel canonical structures. Moreover, we give
two characterization theorems for the totally umbilical proper hemi-slant
submanifolds. Finally, we obtain a basic inequality involving Ricci curvature
and the squared mean curvature of a hemi-slant submanifold of a certain type
locally product Riemannian manifold
Effects of Story Map Method on Listening and Reading Comprehension of 1st Grade Elementary School Students
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the story map on elementary school first-grade students’ listening and reading comprehension levels and their attitudes towards reading in literacy teaching process. It was conducted on 69 students studying in the first-grade in an elementary school in the Western Black Sea region and assigned by matching. In the research, “Quasi-experimental Design”, one of the quantitative research methods, was used. During the data collection process, the Reading Attitude Scale with “Garfield Picture” for 1-6th-Grade Students to Turkish was implemented in the experimental and control groups as a pretest and post-test. While the story map was implemented in the lessons in the experimental group, the implementation process was completed by teaching the lesson without any implementation in the control group. The texts in which listening and reading comprehension questions were implemented included 26 narrative texts in the elementary school 1st-grade Turkish book. The data collected with the “Listening and Reading Comprehension Achievement Test” and Reading Attitude Scale with “Garfield “Picture for 1-6th-Grade Students to Turkish implemented after the experimental procedure were evaluated with the SPSS 20 statistical software. At the end of the study, it was concluded that the experimental group, in which the story map was implemented before the listening and reading comprehension questions, was more successful in comprehension than the control group. When the effects of the story map on the attitude towards listening and reading comprehension were examined, a positive improvement was found in listening and reading comprehension in the experimental group
Bias in Scientific Research
The aim of research is to find the “truth” in medicine. The researcher should be aware of the causes and characteristics of conscious and unconscious errors and know how to prevent them in order to reflect the “truth”. The value determined in epidemiological studies is the sum of: 1) Truth, 2) Random error, 3) Systematic error (Bias). In order to declare that the result is correct, errors must be excluded. Errors may arise at several stages in epidemiological research. Systematic errors lead to bias. In controlled studies, systematic errors often cause significant difference of one study group. However, “random error” or the chance factor does not cause bias. Since this type of error causes a deviation in both groups in the same direction, its effect is canceled, however the sensitivity of the results may decrease. Bias may be conscious or unconscious. A conscious bias is an intentional unethical act, made in order to achieve an intended result, ignoring scientific rules. Unconscious bias is due to inexperience of the researchers who do not consider the factors that may affect the results. Various errors may be made during epidemiological measurements. Since errors can never be eliminated, one should aim to minimize errors. Minimizing systematic errors increases the validity, and minimizing random errors increases power and accuracy of the studies. Bias results in incorrect diagnosis and management proposals, and waste of resources in studies that are carried out to diagnose health problems and to develop management strategies
Assessment of the Touristic Activities Conducted by Couchsurfing Participants in Terms of Their Relevance to Slow Tourism Criteria
Especially lately, it is quite apparent that tourists are adopting a slow life style. The couchsurfing (CS) social network creates an environment that is socially, culturally and environmentally interactive and enables travellers from different cultures to come together. This study examines CS’s members travel behaviour within the context of slow tourism. The data were gathered through a survey technique, one of the common quantitative research methods, and analyzed with the SPSS 20.0 Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. The results show that the general slow tourism level (=3. 31) of the participants is around 3 points, which is a medium level. When arithmetic average figures regarding the sub-dimensions of slow tourism are analyzed, average points for “slowness” and “emotion” are higher than other aspects, which are =3.31 and =3.26 respectively. It has not been found another study regarding CS’s members travel behaviour within the context of slow tourism in the literature. Therefore the results of this study have not been compared with another study results. The entire universe could not be reached because of the number of people constituting the universe is greater than ten thousand and time constraints. Therefore sampling method was used. Although the survey sent to 1700 CS members, 180 questionnaires were collected. In this study participants’ slow tourism behaviors according to place living in and to preferred place is studied. However participants’ slow tourism behaviors according to the nationality is not studied. In future studies, if participants’ slow tourism behaviors according to the nationality will examination, literature would be made an important contribution. In addition, there are millions of CS members all over the world. This study is seen that the general slow tourism ( =3,02) values of the CS participants that are approximately 3 points the middle value. Therefore if local governments will focus slow tourism activities in the destination, especially for slowness dimension, it will be effective to attract CS members to the destination. Construction of new chaotic dynamical systems on a 2D Cantor set
In this paper, we construct new discrete chaotic dynamical systems on a 2D Cantor set by using the shift map, a 0-preadded map and a 2-preadded map. We also obtain a collection of chaotic dynamical systems using the elements of the symmetry group
of the square
Revealing Fifth-Grade Students’ Understanding of the Universe
Previous research has shown that students at almost all levels have misconceptions about both the shapes and sizes of celestial bodies in space. This study is essential to conduct on the students who take space topic in their schools for the first time This study aims at revealing fifth-grade students’ alternative conceptions about the size of the sun, earth, and moon and their relative positions to each other. This study employs action research by using a forced questionnaire and interview were used as the research instruments and involved 78 fifth-grade students as participants. To collect data, all students initially responded to a forced question questionnaire. Then, based on their responses, four students were chosen to be interviewed to clarify their alternative conceptions. The data analysis was carried out using interview and questionnaire data to reveal understanding and alternative conceptions of students’ responses. The results found that students had alternative conceptions of the earth’s shape in their minds. Moreover, alternative conceptions are commonly found in the sun, earth and moon positions
Red, white, and black : anti-communism, massive resistance, and the case of Orval Faubus
Ankara : The Department of History, Bilkent University, 2008.Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 2008.Includes bibliographical references leaves 120-123.In 1954, The Supreme Court of the United States declared in the Brown v.
Board of Education decision that racial segregation in the nation’s public schools
was against the U.S. Constitution. In the South, where racial segregation was the
norm, the decision triggered a region wide reaction called the Massive Resistance.
The resistance movement also coincided with the domestic anti-communist
consensus of the Cold War, but the historical southern tendency to brand racial
reform as communistic was more central. One focus of the thesis is this continuity.
The other focus is on how a moderate Upper South state, Arkansas, became the site
of the greatest Massive Resistance crisis in 1957 over the integration of the Little
Rock High School, owing to the anti-communist and segregationist propaganda
emanating from the Deep South. Although the movement was initiated by a
conservative white elite, the support of local southern community and the
intimidation of moderately inclined white southerners, was a key to its success. In
reaching down to grassroots and pushing moderacy to inactivity, the combination of
an anti-communist and anti-integrationist rhetoric had specific importance in
Arkansas. It was with such combination that the resistance could contribute greatly to
the building up of the 1957 integration crisis in Little Rock, by mostly mobilizing the
otherwise silent grassroots and by giving the previously moderate Governor Orval
Faubus an opportunity to assert a new and more acceptable conservative stance. To
get down to local circumstances personal papers of southern leaders, mostly
including propaganda material, Faubus’s personal papers and autobiographies, and
memoirs of Arkansas figures were consulted, as well as secondary sources.Ă–zdemir, Fatma DoÄźuĹźM.S
CULTURAL HERITAGE AND TOURISM IN ŞALIURFA MEDIEVAL CAVE STONE QUARRIES “BAZDA CAVES”
Cultural and natural heritage is a consociate heritage of all humanity. As the country and region where the cultural heritage is located gains importance, more tourists come and thus economic gain for the region increases with tourism. Located in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, the Bazda Caves with their appearance and mysterious history, that are located within the borders of the historical Harran district of Şanlıurfa, should be introduced to the world by bringing them together with cultural tourism. In the study, “Bazda Caves” will be examined and the relationship with tourism as a Cultural Heritage value will be conveyed.
