This study investigates the empirical relationships between macroeconomic instability, capital accumulation and growth in Turkey over the period 1963-1999. We use recent time series econometric techniques, such as cointegration and impulse response analysis, to analyze empirical relationships between the variables of interest. The results of this paper suggest that the chronic and increasing macroeconomic instability of the Turkish economy has seriously affected her capital formation and hence her growth. Furthermore, chronic macroeconomic instability seems to become a serious impediment to the public investment, especially, its infrastructure component, and shattered or, even reversed the complementarity between public and private investment in the long-run. Therefore, Turkish experience has shown that macroeconomic instability not only deteriorates economic growth but it could also reverse the complementarity between public and private investment in the long-run.Public Investment, Private Investment, Complementarity, Macroeconomic Instability

Especially during the last decade, Knowledge Sharing (KS) have become one of the most debated research topics within the growing amount of research on Knowledge Management (KM). As in all other business, KS practices are very important for hotels at providing proper service performance and gaining competitive advantage through unique knowledge. However, the number of studies conducted related to KS in the tourism and hospitality enterprises are still limited. To fully understand how KS practices can be perform successfully, KS processes and the effects of leaders on KS practices need to be explore in depth. Thus, this study primarily focuses on KS practices at international hotel chains (IHC) in which KS practices are more important compared to other hotels due to their geographically dispersed structure. Moreover, this study aims to determine the effects of transformational leaders on KS practices. Above all, this study consist important findings which are identifying KS process at IHC and emphasizing the importance of TL for the success of KS. For the purpose of the study, two hundred and twenty seven junior administrative and mid-level managers of 29 IHC operating in Turkey were chosen as the sample of this study. And, the required data were collected by questionnaire. Data analysis determined that KS practices are highly performed in IHC and TL have some important-positive effects on KS practices. A novel label free immunosensor based on single-use ITO-PET electrodes for detection MAGE1 protein

    Get PDF
This study is aimed to design a label free biosensor based on transparent ITO-PET (Indium tin oxide-polyethylene terephthalate) electrode to determine MAGE1 protein. Firstly, indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes were modified with NH4OH/H2O2/H2O to obtain the OH groups on the surface. Later, the surface of ITO electrodes were treated with 3-glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane (3-GOPE). After SAM formation, anti-MAGE1 protein was covalently immobilized on modified ITO electrodes. The parameters such as SAMs concentration, the concentration and incubation time of anti-MAGE1 solution were optimized. For determining the immobilization steps and optimization of the biosensor, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were utilized. To determine analytical characterization of designed biosensor; linear range, repeatability, reproducibility, regeneration processes were studied. In optimum conditions, the linear range of the biosensor was determined as 0.01 pg-1.28 pg mL(-1). Square wave voltammetry technique was applied to the biosensor. These steps were realized in K-3[Fe (CN)(6)]/K/4[Fe(CN)(6)] redox probe. Moreover, Single frequency technique was used to understand the interaction between antiMAGE-1 and MAGE-1 protein. This step was realized in pH 7 phosphate buffer. And also, shelf life of designed biosensor was investigated. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) technique was used to determine the morphology of the surface in every step. The other important parameter for this study was Kramer's Kronig transform. It is used to determine whether the impedance spectra of the designed biosensor are affected from the deviation obtained because of external factors. Lastly, the designed biosensor was applied to real human serum and the results were compared with ELISA (Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay) test. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Ensemble move acceptance in selection hyper-heuristics

    Get PDF
Selection hyper-heuristics are high level search methodologies which control a set of low level heuristics while solving a given problem. Move acceptance is a crucial component of selection hyper-heuristics, deciding whether to accept or reject a new solution at each step during the search process. This study investigates group decision making strategies as ensemble methods exploiting the strengths of multiple move acceptance methods for improved performance. The empirical results indicate the success of the proposed methods across six combinatorial optimisation problems from a benchmark as well as an examination timetabling problem

    Get PDF
Powder metallurgy (PM) is a modern manufacturing method that allows high-tech materials, alloys and complex shaped parts to be manufactured with precision and almost without the need for finishing operations such as deburring. PM involves powder production, powder processing, forming operations, pressing and sintering or pressure-assisted hot consolidation. This paper reports results on Ni1-xZnxFe2O4 produced by powder metallurgy at different sintering temperatures. Ni1-xZnxFe2O4 is an interesting functional magnetic material due to its special properties such as stability, very good dielectric properties, electrical resistivity, low dielectric loss, chemical stability, etc. all being important in cutting-edge technology. The use of Ni1-xZnxFe2O4 in diverse fields such as the biomedical field i.e. drug delivery is another vibrant research area. SEM imaging was performed for the structural analysis of the produced bulk sample. EDXRF analyses were performed for elemental composition along with SEM images.Trakya University [TUBAP-2011/149]In this study, the experimental data obtained during Mustafa ARAS's Master's Thesis (under the supervision of Prof. Muemin SAHIN), was used. This study examined the hatchability performance of the offspring and some egg quality characteristics, which will be obtained from crossing Leghorn breed chickens and five different genotypes. The study's experiment was carried out in the Prof. Dr. Hümeyra Özgen Research and Application Farm in Selcuk University. In the present study, which was designed to have one male and twelve females belonging to each genotype, a total of 186 eggs from each flock were examined. No adverse results were found in the incubation results of the crosses made with our local breed Denizli and Araucana, Brahma, and Cornish breeds, whose breeders increased locally. When egg quality characteristics were examined, the difference in egg weight between F1 genotypes was insignificant and ranged between 46.91-51.54 g on average. When the F2 generation was investigated, egg weight differed between genotype groups, and the average weights ranged between 57.6-67.14 g. In addition, the effect of genotype on egg shell strength values were found to be significant. In addition, the effect of genotype on egg shell strength and shell weight values were found to be significant. However, the effect on the Haugh Unit and yellow height were insignificant in the same generation. As a result, hybridizing genotypes with low yield performance with commercially important genotypes could provide a genotype for alternative production systems for future generations.

Aim: Shoulder pain and disability is a complication that can be seen frequently after implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation. The aims of this study were to determine the causes of shoulder problems and related factors in patients with ICD implantation and to investigate the effects of shoulder problems on quality of life and psychological status. Material and Methods: A total of ninety-four consecutive patients (average age 59.38±10.75 years) who admitted to ICD follow up clinic were included in the study. Patients who had shoulder problems were referred to our physical therapy and rehabilitation outpatient clinic for further evaluation. The Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), Short Form-36 (SF-36) and The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were used as the clinical assessment scales. Results: Thirty-nine (41.5%) patients had shoulder complaints. The patients were divided into two groups according to presence of shoulder problem. The statistical analysis revealed no significant differences between the groups in terms of the socio-demographic and clinical characteristics. None of these characteristics was demonstrated as a risk factor for the development of shoulder problem (p>0.05). There were significantly lower SF-36 subgroup scores and higher HADS depression and anxiety scores in patients with shoulder complaints. The SPADI scores also showed significant correlations with shoulder pain VAS score, several subgroups of SF-36 and HADS scores (p<0.05). Conclusion: Our study revealed that patients with shoulder complications had decreased quality of life and deteriorated psychological status. In patients with ICD, awareness should be increased in terms of shoulder problems and appropriate management strategies should be determined

Between a rock and a hard place: corporate elites in the context of religion and secularism in Turkey

Drawing on discourse analyses of 36 in-depth interviews with elite business people from Turkey, the study identifies the networking patterns of new and established business elites in the context of economic liberalization and socioreligious transformation of the country. Through a comparative analysis of the so-called secular and religious elite networks, we demonstrate the role of institutional actors such as the government, and identity networks, based on religion and place of birth in shaping the form and content of social networks among business elites in Turkey. In order to achieve this, we operationalize Bourdieu's notion of theory of practice and Granovetter's theory of social networks, illustrating the utility of combining these approaches in explicating the form and content of social networks in their situated contexts, in which power and divergent interests are negotiated.Galatasaray University Research Fund [grant number 12.102.005]
