Therefore, it is of crucial importance to develop effective approaches to generate robust project schedules that are less vulnerable to disruptions caused by uncontrollable factors. This dissertation concentrates on robust scheduling in project environments; specifically, we address the discrete time/cost trade-off problem (DTCTP). Firstly, Benders Decomposition based exact algorithms to solve the deadline and the budget versions of the deterministic DTCTP of realistic sizes are proposed. We have included several features to accelerate the convergence and solve large instances to optimality. Secondly, we incorporate uncertainty in activity costs. We formulate robust DTCTP using three alternative models. We develop exact and heuristic algorithms to solve the robust models in which uncertainty is modeled via interval costs. The main contribution is the incorporation of uncertainty into a practically relevant project scheduling problem and developing problem specific solution approaches. To the best of our knowledge, this research is the first application of robust optimization to DTCTP. Finally, we introduce some surrogate measures that aim at providing an accurate estimate of the schedule robustness. The pertinence of proposed measures is assessed through computational experiments. Using the insight revealed by the computational study, we propose a two-stage robust scheduling algorithm. Furthermore, we provide evidence that the proposed approach can be extended to solve a scheduling problem with tardiness penalties and earliness rewards.Hazır, ÖncüPh.D

A classification and review of approaches and methods for modeling uncertainty in projects

In this paper, we created a classification for major sources of uncertainty in projects and categorized the studies in project scheduling literature with respect to the uncertainty source(s) they address. In addition, we investigated the approaches and methods to manage uncertainty and studied the literature regarding these methods. Project management predominantly models the randomness in the duration of activities; however, studies modeling the uncertainty due to other sources are scarce. We focused on these sources of uncertainty and highlighted the promising areas of research. The results presented in this paper will help researchers to identify the research gaps in modeling project uncertainty

Formulation and solution of an optimal control problem for industrial project control

International audienceIn this paper, we consider the monitoring and control of industrial projects that are performed by executing different activities within a given time duration. Hereby, it is desired to apply project control to each activity in order to avoid unexpected deviations in the project cost, respecting that the amount and cost of project control needs to be limited. We model the general setting of industrial project control as an optimal control problem with the goal of maximizing the cost reduction (savings) when applying control, while meeting constraints on the control effort. We then prove that it is optimal to apply a constant control effort to each activity during a given time duration. Consequently, we show that the exact optimal control solution can be obtained by nonlinear programming. We illustrate our results by an application example from the construction industry

In today's highly competitive uncertain project environments, it is of crucial importance to develop analytical models and algorithms to schedule and control project activities so that the deviations from the project objectives are minimized. This paper addresses the integrated scheduling and control in multi-mode project environments. We propose an optimization model that models the dynamic behavior of projects and integrates optimal control into a practically relevant project scheduling problem. From the scheduling perspective, we address the discrete time/cost trade-off problem, whereas an optimal control formulation is used to capture the effect of project control. Moreover, we develop a solution algorithm for two particular instances of the optimal project control. This algorithm combines a tabu search strategy and nonlinear programming. It is applied to a large scale test bed and its efficiency is tested by means of computational experiments. To the best of our knowledge, this research is the first application of optimal control theory to multi-mode project networks. The models and algorithms developed in this research are targeted as a support tool for project managers in both scheduling and deciding on the timing and quantity of control activities

A Data Envelopment Analysis Method for Finding Robust and Cost-Efficient Schedules in Multimode Projects

The execution of industrial projects is subject to uncertainties that cause deviations from the designated project schedules. Therefore, it is desired to generate robust schedules in the sense of being insensitive to project disruptions, such as deviations in activity durations. Beyond that, efficient schedules that offer high robustness at a low cost are preferred. This paper focuses on the discrete time-cost tradeoff problem and develops a new method for identifying and ranking efficient schedules. First, a large schedule pool with robust schedules is generated. Efficient schedules are then identified and ranked by applying data envelopment analysis (DEA) with a particular super-efficiency model. An extensive evaluation based on a project testbed and an example construction project shows that the proposed method finds and ranks efficient schedules, that can be suitably presented to a project manager for decision support

International audienceThis review paper presents the state of the art on the problems, approaches and analytical models for assembly and transfer line design and balancing that addresses explicitly cost and profit oriented objectives. The discussions aim to facilitate identifying open problems and research areas that have wide practical applications and that necessitate further investigations. Moreover, they might serve as a foundation for developing decision support systems (DSS) that aid managers in planning and designing profitable or cost efficient assembly and transfer lines
