Molecular changes in detrained & retrained adult jaw muscle
A hypofunctional masticatory system was developed in 21-day-old male rats by feeding them a soft diet for 27 weeks. Retraining of a parallel group for 6 weeks was achieved by switching back to a hard diet after 21 weeks. A control group was fed a hard diet for 27 weeks. At the end of the experimental period, the expression levels of the myosin heavy chain isoform genes MYH 1 and 2 (fast), 3 (embryonic) and 7 (slow) in the deep masseter were compared using qRT-PCR analysis. The gene expressions of MYH 3 and MYH 7 were significantly higher in the rehabilitation group compared with the normal and hypofunctional group, but no significant differences were found in regards to the gene expression of MYH 1 and 2. Retraining made it possible for the slow (MYH 7) isoform levels to adapt to the increased mechanical load. The increased level of embryonic (MYH 3) isoform could be due to the need of creation of new MYH isoform
High sensitivity measurements of the CMB power spectrum with the extended Very Small Array
We present deep Ka-band ( GHz) observations of the CMB made
with the extended Very Small Array (VSA). This configuration produces a
naturally weighted synthesized FWHM beamwidth of arcmin which covers
an -range of 300 to 1500. On these scales, foreground extragalactic
sources can be a major source of contamination to the CMB anisotropy. This
problem has been alleviated by identifying sources at 15 GHz with the Ryle
Telescope and then monitoring these sources at 33 GHz using a single baseline
interferometer co-located with the VSA. Sources with flux densities \gtsim 20
mJy at 33 GHz are subtracted from the data. In addition, we calculate a
statistical correction for the small residual contribution from weaker sources
that are below the detection limit of the survey.
The CMB power spectrum corrected for Galactic foregrounds and extragalactic
point sources is presented. A total -range of 150-1500 is achieved by
combining the complete extended array data with earlier VSA data in a compact
configuration. Our resolution of allows the first 3
acoustic peaks to be clearly delineated. The is achieved by using mosaiced
observations in 7 regions covering a total area of 82 sq. degrees. There is
good agreement with WMAP data up to where WMAP data run out of
resolution. For higher -values out to , the agreement in
power spectrum amplitudes with other experiments is also very good despite
differences in frequency and observing technique.Comment: 16 pages. Accepted in MNRAS (minor revisions
To be an immigrant and a patient in Sweden: A study with an individualised perspective
The aim is to describe how experiences of being an immigrant can influence the situation when becoming a patient in Swedish health care. A hermeneutic approach was used. Sixteen persons born in non-Nordic countries were interviewed. The data was analysed with an empirical hermeneutical method. The findings indicate that positive experiences (i.e., establishing oneself in a new home country) enhance the possibilities of taking part in caring situations and vice versa. Hence, there is a need for individually adapted care that takes one's whole life situation into consideration. Consequently, it is suggested that the concept, “cultural competence” merely serves the purpose of illuminating caregivers' need for categorisation. It does not illuminate individual needs in a caring situation
Current constraints on Cosmological Parameters from Microwave Background Anisotropies
We compare the latest observations of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB)
Anisotropies with the theoretical predictions of the standard scenario of
structure formation. Assuming a primordial power spectrum of adiabatic
perturbations we found that the total energy density is constrained to be
while the energy density in baryon and Cold Dark
Matter (CDM) are and ,
(all at 68% C.L.) respectively. The primordial spectrum is consistent with
scale invariance, () and the age of the universe is
Gyrs. Adding informations from Large Scale Structure and
Supernovae, we found a strong evidence for a cosmological constant
and a value of the Hubble parameter
. Restricting this combined analysis to flat universes, we put
constraints on possible 'extensions' of the standard scenario. A gravity waves
contribution to the quadrupole anisotropy is limited to be (95%
c.l.). A constant equation of state for the dark energy component is bound to
be (95% c.l.). We constrain the effective relativistic degrees
of freedom and the neutrino chemical potential and (massless neutrinos).Comment: The status of cosmological parameters before WMAP. In press on Phys.

Use of zinc phosphate cement as a luting agent for Denzir™ copings: an in vitro study
BACKGROUND: The clinical success rate with zinc phosphate cemented Procera crowns is high. The objective with this study was to determine whether CADCAM processed and zinc phosphate cemented Denzir copings would perform as well as zinc phosphate cemented Procera copings when tested in vitro in tension. METHODS: Twelve Procera copings and twenty-four Denzir copings were made. After the copings had been made, twelve of the Denzir copings were sandblasted on their internal surfaces. All copings were then cemented with zinc phosphate cement to carbon steel dies and transferred to water or artificial saliva. Two weeks after cementation, half of the samples were tested. The remaining samples were tested after one year in the storage medium. All tests were done in tension and evaluated with an ANOVA. RESULTS: Sandblasted and un-sandblasted Denzir copings performed as well as Procera copings. Storage in water or artificial saliva up to one year did not decrease the force needed to dislodge any of the coping groups. Three copings fractured during testing and one coping developed a crack during testing. The three complete fractures occurred in Procera copings, while the partly cracked coping was a Denzir coping. CONCLUSION: No significant differences existed between the different material groups, and the retentive force increased rather than decreased with time. Fewer fractures occurred in Denzir copings, explained by the higher fracture toughness of the Denzir material. Based on good clinical results with zinc phosphate cemented Procera crowns, we foresee that zinc phosphate cement luted Denzir copings are likely to perform well clinically
Constraining the shape of the CMB: a Peak-by-Peak analysis
The recent measurements of the power spectrum of Cosmic Microwave Background
anisotropies are consistent with the simplest inflationary scenario and big
bang nucleosynthesis constraints. However, these results rely on the assumption
of a class of models based on primordial adiabatic perturbations, cold dark
matter and a cosmological constant. In this paper we investigate the need for
deviations from the -CDM scenario by first characterizing the spectrum
using a phenomenological function in a 15 dimensional parameter space. Using a
Monte Carlo Markov chain approach to Bayesian inference and a low curvature
model template we then check for the presence of new physics and/or systematics
in the CMB data. We find an almost perfect consistency between the
phenomenological fits and the standard -CDM models. The improved
spectral resolution expected from future satellite experiments is warranted for
a definitive test of the scenario.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. Revised version with results from latest Cosmic

Physiotherapists' experiences of physiotherapy interventions in scientific physiotherapy publications focusing on interventions for children with cerebral palsy: a qualitative phenomenographic approach
Background: Physiotherapy research concerning interventions for children with CP is often focused on collecting evidence of the superiority of particular therapeutic methods or treatment modalities. Articulating and documenting the use of theory, instrumentation and research design and the assumptions underlying physiotherapy research interventions are important. Physiotherapy interventions focusing on children with Cerebral Palsy should, according to the literature, be based on a functional and environmental perspective with task-specific functional activity, motor learning processes and Family-Centred Service i.e. to enhance motor ability and improve capacity so that the child can perform the tasks necessary to participate actively in everyday life. Thus, it is important to coordinate the norms and values of the physiotherapist with those of the family and child. The aim of this study was to describe how physiotherapists' experiences physiotherapy interventions for children with CP in scientific physiotherapy publications written by physiotherapists. Methods: A qualitative phenomenographic approach was used. Twenty-one scientific articles, found in PubMed, strategically chosen according to year of publication (2001-2009), modality, journals and country, were investigated. Results: Three qualitatively different descriptive categories were identified: A: Making it possible a functional-based intervention based on the biopsychosocial health paradigm, and the role of the physiotherapist as collaborative, interacting with the child and family in goal setting, intervention planning and evaluation, B: Making it work an impairment-based intervention built on a mixed health paradigm (biomedical and biopsychosocial), and the role of the physiotherapist as a coach, leading the goal setting, intervention planning and evaluation and instructing family members to carry out physiotherapist directed orders, and; C: Making it normal an impairment-based intervention built on a biomedical health paradigm, and the role of the physiotherapist as an authoritative expert who determine goals, intervention planning and evaluation. Conclusions: Different paradigms of health and disability lead to different approaches to physiotherapy which influence the whole intervention process regarding strategies for the assessment and treatment, all of which influence Family-Centred Service and the child's motor learning strategies. The results may deepen physiotherapists' understanding of how different paradigms of health influence the way in which various physiotherapy approaches in research seek to solve the challenge of CP
