Adaptation to salt stress in rice - How jasmonates contribute to the response to high salinity

    Get PDF
The response of two jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis rice mutants (cpm2 and hebiba) to salt stress was investigated in comparison to their wild type. The JA-biosynthesis mutants showed a less-salt sensitive phenotype compared to the wild type. Interestingly, the transfer of sodium ions from roots to shoots was reduced in JA biosynthesis mutants as both cpm2 and hebiba plants accumulated smaller amounts of Na+ ions in their leaves, while roots of both contained similar quantities

Modelling of head movement in expression of disgust

    Get PDF
Head movement modelling can be seen as a part of facial expression study because some expressions like disgust involves head movement. Head movement information can be acquired by video recording process. The recording process has to deal with image distortion correctable via plumb-line method. Unfortunately the linear fitting used in plumb-line requires piecewise function. The thesis aims to enhance the plumb-line-based image distortion correction using conic function coefficient evaluation replacing linear fitting. Experiments conducted shows that the proposed method handles various line orientations without having to rely on piecewise function. Besides distortion correction, an approach for expression movement tracking is needed. Optical flow-template matching is one of the techniques used for tracking. However, existing search algorithms did not discuss much on the looping technique of template matching. Moreover, tracking transient features during expression requires special process as the feature exists intermittently. The thesis aims to enhance the optical flow-template matching-based tracking method for tracking feature points during head movement by controlling the search loop and introducing anchoring to handle transient components. Experiment showed that the proposed method recorded a reduction in comparison of 40.1% over another similar method during worse case scenario. Besides reduction, the proposed method also lowered the lost point during searching when compared with existing method. Head movement modelling is not given proper attention in facial expression study hence affecting head model believability in computer graphics. The thesis aims to design head movement quantification method for head movement during disgust expression. The quantification method tracks movements of the head inclusive of the neck and named as ‘Dual Pivot Head Tracking’ (DPHT). To prove that it is perceptually better to use the proposed method, a perceptual study of expression with and without head movement was conducted. Results showed that subjects perceived disgust expression better if the proposed method is used ( -score of neck given head=14.9 vs. head given neck=3.59). To further support our proposal on the need to track head movement inclusive of the neck, experiments tracking subjects depicting disgust were conducted. A statistical two-tailed test to evaluate the existence of neck motion during head movement was done. Furthermore, visual comparison was made with a model without head movement approach. Results showed that neck motion was presence during head movement of disgust (z-score = 3.4 with p-value = 0.0006). Similarly the visual depictions showed that without the head movement inclusive of neck the rendering seemed to be incomplete. Having movement information, the thesis aims to design a temporal model of head movement during disgust expression. Neck motion, a part of head motion, plays a role during disgust expression. The thesis proposes spline-based function named Joint Cubic Bezier (JCB) to model neck motion during disgust. Experiments showed that using JCB, analysis and synthesis of neck motion during disgust expression is better than via cosine and exponential approach with angular separation score of JCB=0.986041, Exponential=0.897163 and Cosine=0.90773

Monitoring Power Consumption by Changing Query Plan for Single Database System

    Get PDF
Green computing or Green IT is the environmentally responsible use of computers and related resources as well as the reduction of power resource consumption. In supporting green computing and Green IT, this project is being carried out with the main purpose of creating a draft or template where it can calculate the power consumption of the computer or server when the database query is being process by implementing different type of query plan. The power consumption can be measured by using an energy saving power meter. A consolidated sample of management system will be developed as to indicate the context of the project in testing the query plan from a centralized database system. This project emphasizes on the amount of power usage (in watts) that the query plan consumed in assembling the data. It is more on focusing on the simulation of query plan in consuming power and not on developing a real-time system. Hence making the functionality and reliability of the system is not the main focus and will not be discussed in this paper work. By the end of this project, database developers would be able to see and analyze the various query plan applied in retrieving the same output under a specified condition that gives dissimilar power reading which indicates the different amount of power consumption by each query plan

Study on C02 Corrosion in Oil Producing Well

    Get PDF
The purpose of this project is to study the C02 corrosion in oil production wells and the focus of the study will be on the tubing component of the production string. The main objectives of the project are; a) To study the material used in a well production string. b) To determine the average C02 corrosion rate of a typical well production string. As for the problem statement of this project, in oil and gas industry, C02 corrosion has been a recognized problem in production and transportation facilities for many years e.g. in the tubing string of an oil producing well. The corroded tubing will cause leakage and tubing failure hence, disrupt oil production. The scopes of study for this project consist of identifying the rate of C02 corrosion during the production life time of the tubing string and determine the factors leading to the C02 corrosion. In order to provide a reliable prediction on the behavior of C02 corrosion on tubing steel, the project's methodology used Weight Loss Method using Autoclave Machine and Linear Polarization Resistance Method (LPR) to simulate the actual environment in the tubing during the oil production and analyze the C02 corrosion rate. The laboratory experiments are conducted on API L 80 type steel. The Weighted Loss Method is conducted in stagnant condition using 3 wt% NaCl over a series of parameters which includes pressure = l 0 bar, 40 bar and 60 bar, pH=5 and temperature at 25 DC. The LPR method is conducted in flowing solution using 3 wt% NaCl over a series of parameters which includes temperature = 25 OC, 40 T and 60 T, pH = 5 and pressure at 1 atm. All data were collected and analyzed using Weighted Loss Method, LPR, SEM, OM and Hardness (Vicker) Test to determine the C02 corrosion rate and the effects on the L 80 steel. As for the findings, the average C02 corrosion rates in API L 80 steel yield from the laboratory test ranges from 1.3 mm/yr to 4. 7 mm/yr

    Get PDF
The purpose of this project is to intelligently use various Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) techniques for voltage control of DC-AC inverter. In this project, various PWM techniques are analyzed to see the difference between each of the technique. Then, fuzzy logic controller is chosen as a control scheme to control the output voltage of the inverter. The scopes include the simulation of various PWM techniques using MATLAB/SIMULINK, modeling and simulation of the PWM inverter, modeling and simulation of fuzzy logic controller (FLC) feed into PWM inverter, and finally the detail analysis on the output waveforms based on the simulation. Different PWM techniques will result in different value of peak voltage and different level of harmonics. Therefore, the right choice of the PWM technique is crucial in designing the inverter. Instead of using a conventional controller, this project was about to introduce the ability and also the advantages of the FLC to intelligently control PWM’s pulses in inverters application. This project is a comprehensive research study about various PWM techniques to control. This project results in a number of ways to control the PWM inverter by using FLC that can suit with a lot of industrial applications. For future work, it is highly recommended to use Artificial-Neural Network (ANN) as a control scheme to control output voltage of an inverter, and compare the results between ANN and FLC

Bulk store as an effort to reduce marine debris in Bajo Pulau

    Get PDF
Damage to coastal ecosystems and shallow waters of the Bajo Pulau Village, Sape Sub-district, Bima District, West Nusa Tenggara Province is caused by the accumulation of household waste that is not managed by the community from year to year. It resulted in a reduction in the quality of seawater. This study examines the various factors behind it and synthesizes the solution to the problem by proposing a bulk store. The research method used is descriptive-analytic with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out by observation, field studies, literature studies, and interviews. The results showed that Indonesia (as the largest archipelagic country) has a low interconnectivity level. It causes small islands to be vulnerable to environmental degradation. This vulnerability is also caused by the lack of a business system that considers sustainable environmental capabilities. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the amount of household waste scattered on land and in the sea that threatens the surrounding ecosystem with the concept of a minimal garbage collection facility based on a cooperative system
