Rethinking reflection in teaching and teacher education: A review of the existing frameworks and a proposal for an alternative terminology

    Get PDF
Reflection in education is usually associated with teachers reviewing their own practices in order to identify problems and find possible solutions to be applied in practice. Following the scoping review design suggested by Arksey and O’Malley (2005), the paper focuses on the existing theses written on reflection in education in the Turkish context as well as the major frameworks employed in the field on reflection in teaching and teacher education. Based on this review, the aim of this paper is to argue that the term “reflection”, which is used to represent a deep cognitive and metacognitive process about teaching and learning experiences is misleading and insufficient. Thus, relying on mainly the concepts used by Gestalt psychologists, a new term to be used instead of reflection is proposed: insighting. This new term, not only represents the inward look and deep philosophical questioning needed for successful reflection, but it also represents a positive conceptualisation of the act of deep thinking, removing it from being conceptualised as an aspect of “problem solving” alone

Correcting the Echo-Planar Image Encoding Imperfections in Arterial Spin Labeling MRI using Magnetic Field Monitoring and Gradient Impulse Responses

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) based perfusion MRI has inherently very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Therefore, these methods require rapid k-space coverage. This is often achieved by using a readout sequence such as gradient-echo-EPI. However, such a fast k-space traversal typically needs the gradients to be operated at the maximum of the hardware specks and to be alternated rapidly during the execution which makes acquisition highly sensitive to gradient field deviations. The resulting deviations in the gradient field time courses cause substantial artifacts on the reconstructed images. In this work, we directly recorded the gradient waveform fidelities using a dynamic field camera technology and reconstructed the acquired ASL data with monitored gradient waveforms. Furthermore, by assuming that the gradient chain is a linear time-invariant (LTI) system that enables to define the gradient impulse response function (GIRF) of the system as a one-time calibration procedure, the actual gradient waveforms can be predicted. We therefore additionally performed the reconstruction based on such GIRF-predicted k-trajectories. The ultimate effects of gradient field deviations on to the absolute perfusion maps were explored

TEACHING IRREGULAR VERBS IN THE PROJECT-BASED GERMAN WRITING SKILLS COURSE

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to assess how well 178 irregular verbs in German were taught in a project-based writing skills course. The class met for two hours a week; the first hour was spent explaining irregular verbs' meanings, use characteristics, and second and third forms using examples from sentences. Students were required to complete a project in the second hour using irregular verbs they had learnt earlier, including story, poem, and theatre. The completed projects were given to the course instructor, who checked and modified them before distributing them on a weekly basis to the students. The use of this strategy lasted for 14 weeks. Students were given a list of irregular verbs at the start of the semester and instructed to write their definitions, second and third forms. Their responses were assessed. Each verb whose meaning, second and third forms are written correctly was calculated over 4 points and these data formed the pre-test data of the study. At the end of the course, the same list of verbs was provided to the students, who were again asked to write their meanings, second and third forms. These results were used as the post-test data for analysis. The data was analyzed using a t-test, which yielded a significant p-value of 7.168e-10. Examination of the projects submitted by the students revealed a high level of proficiency in the use of irregular verbs, even among those who had difficulty constructing sentences with them previously. Based on the findings of this study, we recommend the adoption of project-based writing skills courses not only in writing courses but also in teaching other subjects in different courses

The Relationship of Burr Height and Blanking Force with Clearance in the Blanking Process of AA5754 Aluminium Alloy

    Get PDF
The effect of clearance and sheet thickness in the AA5754 sheet material blanking process on the burr formation and blanking force was examined experimentally. Measurements of the burr height and blanking force were performed in a modular die with six different clearance values (8 %, 10 %, 12 %, 14 %, 16 % and 18 %) by applying the blanking process to the AA5754 sheet metal of 1 mm and 2 mm in thickness. The influence rate of parameters affecting the burr height, the blanking force, and the mathematical relationship between them were identified by using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the regression analysis. Thus, it was determined that the burr formation increased with increased clearance and that the blanking force was not affected in the same proportion. In addition, it was found that the sheet thickness and clearance affected the burr formation at rates of 23.24 % and 76.15 %, respectively; on the other hand, the sheet thickness and clearance affected the blanking force at rates of 99.72 % and 0.24 %, respectively

MakaledeKKTC ekonomisinin bilgi ekonomisi karakterini taşıyıp taşımadığı, kurulan model ve yapılantestler aracılığıyla denetlenmiş ve KKTC ekonomisinin bilgi ekonomisi olma yolundapotansiyeli olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.well known in the knowledge management literature that knowledge has become an engine ofsocial, economic and cultural development in today’s world. Thus, education is a vital factorfor the accumulation of intellectual capital to reach economic growth. There are thirteenuniversities in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), and higher education is amajor sector. Income generated from the education sector as well as the accelerating numberof universities are two important factors which TRNC government should pay attention to inregards to education and knowledge creation activities. The study aims to emphasize the importance of knowledge economy and to create bothpublic and government awareness particularly for TRNC and for other small economies aswell. The Engle-Granger Causality test in VAR model was used to analyse the causalrelationship between education and economic growth in TRNC and the results indicate apositive impact of knowledge economy variables on the economy’s productivity level. Literacyrate, general and technical high school enrolment rate and higher education enrolment rate is used as knowledge economy variables. Furthermore, the extended Cobb-Douglas production function is applied for the 1977-2010 period and emphasizes the increasing returns to scale in the production process within a given period in TRNC. Overall results show that the TRNC economy has a potential to become a knowledge economy

TREATY OF LAUSANNE: THE TOOL OF MINORITY PROTECTION FOR THE CHAM ALBANIANS OF GREECE

Cham Albanians, a predominantly Muslim sub-group of Albanians who originally reside in the coastal region of Southern Epirus in Greece’s border region with Albania, had been expelled from Greece twice. As the majority of Cham Albanians were Muslim, they were treated with the same contempt as ethnic Turks living in Greece. According to official data, 3.000 of them were transferred to Turkey as part of the Greek-Turkish population exchange according to the Convention Concerning the Exchange of Greek and Turkish Populations signed at Lausanne on 30 January 1923. Articles 37 to 44 of the Lausanne Peace Treaty attribute substantive rights for exempted Muslims in Greece and non-Muslims in Turkey from the Greek-Turkish population exchange and 17,008 of them wereexempted from the exchange. In this paper, legal status of Muslim Cham Albanians of Greece that were exchanged with Orthodox minority that lived in Turkey after World War I and exiled from Greece after World War II, will be analyzed. This paper aims to emphasize thatMuslim Cham Albanians of Greeceare already recipients of special rights as a subject of law, according to the Treaty of Lausanne (1923) that guarantees the rights of the Muslim minority in Greece. We find very important to analyze Cham Question in the context of the Treaty of Lausanne while Greek government insists that the minority is not “Turkish” but “Muslim” to justify banning associations that include the word “Turk”.&nbsp
